A fair walk from the bus stop although we did get a lift back down. Food maybe wasn’t quite as good as expected, the lobster was overcooked. The attention on arrival was a bit lacking.

Lovely location, private bath was amazing. Spotless clean.

bathroom could be a little updated, especially bathroom storage space and a space to hang towels is missing

our stay was amazing! definitely recommend it. because it can be difficult to get there for non-Japanese speakers, I will share how we did the journey from Kyoto: Take a Shinkansen to Odawara Station. Follow the signs to the bus stop exit. Check the individual bus stops for "T" Togendai line. There might also be a service worker to help you. You will ride uphill for over an hour. Get off at stop #255 "Hakone Country Iriguchi", all stops will also be displayed in English on the bus. You need to walk 2-3 streets and the hotel has no English signage displayed. On the way back, you will be taken to the bus stop via car, that's nice. dinner and breakfast at the hotel was just perfect. we received a private dining cabin for the meals.

The Moscow Mule wasn't the best

The room was spacious and clean. The view was impressive and the private Onsen was always ready to be used according to our needs. We really enjoyed our stay.

This location is quite secluded - good if you want to get away from it all but it didn't look like there was anywhere else to go to within walking distance although the bus loop could take you to the attractions. There was no shower in the room so our shower was on the balcony which may not be ideal if the weather is inclement or cold. Looks very modern from the photos and the exterior is modern but the room itself is quite traditional and small. It would be great to have 2 chairs or stools in the room if you did not want to sit on the floor all the time which was difficult for my older partner. There were few English speaking staff. It would be good to get English guest manuals. I used the google camera translate method to understand what it said.

Highlight was the private hot spring tub on the balcony and the view from it. The view from the rooftop deck was gorgeous too. It was fun to be able to select my Kimono from a half dozen choices. Loved the traditional Japanese dinner and breakfast - beautifully presented and delicious as well. Service was great during dinner and breakfast by the same friendly and courteous male server. We so appreciated the free shuttle to the bus stop after checking out.

A little out of the way to get to after getting off the bus, although the hotel does offer shuttle - easier to organise this for the ride back to the bus stop when checking out. However, this is not a big problem as the remote location allowed for the serenity of the accommodation

Beautiful setting of the room and private onsen. Fantastic amenities, food, and friendliness of staff. Felt very immersed in a traditional Japanese experience. Although some room details may feel dated, I did not find that this distracted from how amazing the stay was.

    None, it was all great!

What an amazing stay!!! Highly recommend Hoshi no Akari in Hakone! The check-in experience was honestly 5-star! The staff were so kind and generous and so welcoming. We got to pick out different yukatas to wear during dinner and the food was excellent!! Breakfast and dinner were wonderful! The little treats were received after dinner was such a nice touch as well! Outdoor soaking bath was great (even though we stayed during a storm, so the outdoor shower part during high winds at night was not a pleasant experience). All of the amenities were excellent. We also booked a dry massage that was amazing. Overall, just a truly pleasant stay. I would definitely come back!

Nothing, everything was perfect. The only negative part was that we didn't stay more nights :P

This is a gem in the woods! The breath taking view from our traditional Tatami Floor with the most amazing and relaxing private onsen from our balcony made this stay perfect. We were late for traffic jams to check in and for Dinner and they were very flexible always staying in touch during our day. We were very stressed as we were looking forward for the special dinner we booked and they comforted us by calmly saying it's fine and they will do everything to arrange things on arrival. We were the very last guest to arrive for dinner and the hotel and yet they made everything perfect. Thanks! We would like to come back again.

We were slightly disappointed to find that the hotel's shared onsens are split by gender. Seeing we were a couple made going to the hotel onsen a bit lonely. However, we had a hot bath in our room, so we got to enjoy that together.

It was the best hotel we stayed at in Japan, making it the highlight of our trip! We did not expect it to be so beautiful and luxurious. We paid for half board, which meant we were welcomed with a delicious dinner made up of countless beautifully plated courses. The next morning, breakfast was just as excellent. Our room was perfect, with a private hot spring bath on the balcony. We will never forget the view overlooking a lake at sunset.

The traditional Japanese beds and pillows are a little difficult for us westerners to get used to but we managed. Since the staff needed to clean our room we were asked to leave during the day and traveling around Hakone by bus proved to be a challenge.

We traveled to Japan for our honeymoon and staying at a Ryokan like this one really made it feel like a special occasion. We were given traditional robes to wear around the facilities and had a great view from the private porch in our room. The food was delicious and the staff were overall very helpful.

The walk from the bus stop is a little daunting the first time simply bc there are no sidewalks so you have to pay close attention to the roads and any oncoming traffic.

Beautiful, well maintained ryokan with traditional tatami space in rooms with modern amenities. The staff were incredibly helpful with great attention to detail and taking care that they improved my stay whenever possible. They assisted with luggage forwarding, had a driver to take me to a nearby bus station when I wanted to go out for the day, and checked in on how my day activities went when I came home for dinner (which was always excellent). It was my favorite part of my stay in Japan and I told everyone I knew about it. I would love for another opportunity to stay here again.

Was perfect. Only possible downside I could see is if you wanted to get into the town everyday it's a bit far, but my wife and I just relaxed in the onsen and chilled out rather than going down the mountain.

It was an amazing get away for a couple of days after a few weeks of trekking all over Japan. The onsen on the balcony was amazing, the staff service was thoughtful and very engaged, and if you like traditional Japanese cuisine, the breakfast and dinner provided were an experience.

The rooms although a little more dust present than able to ignore were good.

This loc was amazing! My wife and I truly did admire the older woman who was able to communicate with us in english though our japanese skills were very limited. Unfortunately she was not in the day we checked out we would’ve loved to thank her for the exceptional service. The walk to the loc from the nearest bus stop is not too bad. (carried 2 backpacks and 2 luggage) and their shuttle service was easy to arrange. The food was great, we usually do not eat the sort of meals they provided but it turned out to be absolutely delicious, I implore visitors to keep an open mind because the payout was spectacular. The view especially was breathtaking. We will definitely be make a reservation here again on our next visit.

It was a little bit out the way of the 'action', so required a bus journey to the attractions of the area. This was good at times, because often we were able to get a seat on the bus before the bus got busy. Breakfast was at 8.30 / 9am and dinner at 6 or 6.30pm so it did limit the time you could spend exploring. If we'd have known, we might've extended our stay another night to ensure we could see everything we wanted to. Also, not the most accessible for English speakers. We didn't mind too much, of course we're in Japan and have limited Japanese so we expect to not understand everything but it was a little confusing at times trying to understand room instructions / menu. Google translate was our saviour!

We stayed here on our honeymoon trip to Japan and it was the perfect romantic location. The private onsen overlooking the mountains was a highlight, such beautiful scenery in this area. Our other main highlight was the food - it was traditional keiseki dining in private booths downstairs, and everything was so delicious and displayed beautifully. It was a nice little touch as well, when going back to the room in the evening and there would be ice cold water and a snack! Staff were very nice, although only a few spoke English. The bus station is around 5-10 minutes walk, but the staff can drive you there in the morning.

Hour long bus ride (which wasn’t bad, just long) and only a shuttle TO the bus stop. A taxi would’ve been expensive and about the same amount of time to get up the mountain. Renting a car might be a better experience to get here.

Very authentic ryokan and great in-room onsen :))) Felt lucky to experience this for such an affordable cost due to onsen construction going on.

Hakone is a real natural jewel and I am extremely happy to have chosen it as my last stop after chaotic Tokyo. we stayed in this property which is located in an enchanting position, the view of the mountains from the room gives a feeling of peace and tranquility, outside a private onsen makes everything even more magical. the staff is very kind, they helped us book a taxi for the following day. we had a beautiful dinner wearing typical yukatas and tasting various land and sea dishes. the room is equipped with all comforts, they even made us find a snack. breakfast is served from 8.30 and unfortunately our taxi was at that time so we couldn't enjoy breakfast, but everything was really perfect. I absolutely recommend this structure to those who want to immerse themselves in the peace of Hakone and savor the authenticity of the country
