Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We are currently testing a weighted review system in Malta and Iceland (excluding hotel and vacation rental chains). For properties in these countries, the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

AustraliaNo alternative access to the upper floors. So when it came time to leave, I had to carry my suitcase down the stairs. The issue wasn’t the carrying, but more that it was difficult to balance and move in the slippers (indoor shoes) they gave me. I felt like I was going to lose my footing as there was no traction within in them, especially with socks on.
Very nice. Great staff, very sweet and welcoming. The private bath was wonderful (though wish it was longer than 30min reservation)

AustraliaQuite a lot of stairs for those less agile.
This is a traditional ryokan in a great location a 10 minute walk from the station. Our room had an ensuite bathroom and overlooked the river. The food was delicious. There’s a private onsen which needs to be reserved on check-in. Very little English spoken.

AustraliaThe tatami mats that we had were stained of all sort of colour and sizes... Walls are paper thin so if you're staying for more than one night, prepare earplugs as from 6am we had people setting up breakfast so clinging of dishes, footsteps and then afterwards are rooms cleaning and vacuuming noises throughout the day.
Very traditional with the smell of wood perfume Food changes depending on the day of the week Great amount of food for dinner and breakfast Love the attempt of our nakai in trying to communicate with us in English and offering to take a photo each time without requesting when the food is all set up.

CanadaA little bit worn down. Lots of torn walls, damaged paint, dingy/dirty corners, etc. The bathing facilities are really hot (99% of foreigners will not enjoy this at all), but we understood that before booking. However, having a cold pool to cool down on in between soaks might be nice to help deal with the temperature. The bathing facilities were also just a little run down.
Historic building. Great location. In-room dining service. Attentive staff. Food service was good, although a bit lacking for value.

United StatesStaff mostly doesn't speak english, but we did not need much and were able to figure out everything by using a translator. Of course be ready to pay in cash. And your bags will be delivered to the room during check-in, but we had to bring them back downstairs (~3 floors) ourselves. And no elevator there for sure, so be ready to do a little hike inside the building if you room is high enough.
The place is in walking distance from the station (~10 min). Private bathroom was on the same floor and had a lock so we were very clean. Also ryoukan has a common bathroom and a timeslot bathroom (you're signing for 40min slots when checking in). Breakfasts (~at 7:30, 8:00, 8:30) & dinners (~at 18:00, 18:30, 19:00) were nutritious, varied and, of course, traditional. We (4 people) stayed in a big room ("Akane") with a separator in the middle, so our futons were comfortably placed like 2+2. The view to the mountain from the window during breakfast was facinating and really breathtaking during the night.

AustraliaI would have liked the option to have a "western" breakfast as I know some of the other Ryokans offer. Although I loved trying the traditional breakfast, it was a lot for my western stomach. Also, the toilets all had a bit of a smell of urine, which made me question the cleanliness of the place a bit. It seemed clean, but the smell was off putting
The room was very authentic japanese and the overall experience of staying in a Ryokan was great and memorable. The staff were lovely despite their lack of English, and the meals were beautifully presented.

Brunei Darussalam1. The whole place smells mushiness, and I have a sensitive nose, so I didn't sleep well. 2. They only accept payment by CASH. Strictly no cards. 3. The room is different from what I booked. I booked an open air onsen with a huge window, but it turned up to be a small window instead.
1. The location is 1 bus stop away from the hakone yumoto station, ie 10mins walk distance. 2. Our room came with dinner and breakfast and both meals were not too bad. I enjoyed breakfast more tbh. There is a restaurant beside the Ryokan if you do not enjoy the meals or doesn't suit your taste. 3. There are public and private reserved onsen. 4. They also have a vending machine.
