Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We are currently testing a weighted review system in Malta and Iceland (excluding hotel and vacation rental chains). For properties in these countries, the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

AustraliaOld, dated, needs a clean as could see dust on walls and air con looked dirty and old and wasnt cold.. For the price of nearly $495 per night one expects more. Also breakfast starts only at 0730 so we missed out as our train was at that time. Most places we stayed started breakfast at 0600 to 0630. Plus it's a whole course so could take awhile. Not well considered
The traditional stay feel...spacious room and location by the river and the dinner service.

AustraliaHakone has become a tourist trap full of ignorant tourists wandering through the area sucking on their Starbucks coffees. Only 5 years ago it was really delightful and now it's become a nightmare
It was a really old style Ryokan and had that kind of rustic old feeling which made it feel very comfortable to stay in

United StatesOur second night lady that helped us with food service was rude and untimely. Came in room when i asked her to please give me 10 minutes to dress. Woke us up hour earlier than we requested. She pushed in. So rude. The lady first night was perfect.
Very authentic japan onsen. Sleep on mats on floor. Private onsen.

CanadaThis place is too expensive for 30 minutes private bath. The time slot we got was 12am to 12:30am which wasn’t great. We didn’t want to jump in the water midnight after a tiring day trip.

CanadaFor a guy that eats anything and loves Japanese food this place was amazing. But if you are here to enjoy the customs from the your country and have a hard time adjusting. I would suggest a hotel and mcdonalds, or a place that can accommodate your diets. This place was amazing and deserves way more credit, staff were friendly and were very respectful. If you want to live and breathe the Japanese culture, this is the place for you.
Very lovely staff and hospitable. Meals were amazing! If you love the Japanese culture and want to experience a traditional stay.

United KingdomNo river view although room was booked with a view.
Traditional style accommodation with a nice onsen. You can book a 30 minute slot for the private onsen (first come first served) and other 24h public onsens. Good dinner and breakfast, with traditional and unique (!) dishes.

United StatesWas a little bit old and musty, but that is what was expected when staying in traditional ryokan. If anything it added to the experience, so not much of a negative
Staff was very courteous, private onsen was amazing, ryokan seemed very authentic and great experience overall. Traditional meal was also very cool. Great value.

United StatesThe ryokan is dated and the food was pretty but didn’t taste great. Check in is 3pm and check out is 10am. This didn’t give much time to do anything outside of the ryokan if you didn’t arrive early.
It’s close to the train station and the staff was nice. The private Onsen with Mountain View is a must. You open the window panes which give you unobstructed view is the mountains. We (family of 4) was in the Zuihan room which I believe is the best room in the ryokan.

United StatesThe only thing I thought that could be better is probably the food selection they gave. Another thing would be the lack of views outside the Ryokan which isn't the Ryokan fault of course due to its location.
The staff were super friendly at this Ryokan and the food was good. Not the best set of omakase but overall enjoyed the private onsen to relax. I liked that you could reserve a time for an onsen but I just preferred my private one and worth the money.

SwitzerlandMost of the bad reviews: you have to know what to expect in a Ryokan, if you don't want to experience that better book a Holiday Inn. For all travellers who wish to have a unique and authentic experience: go for it!
It was our first Ryokan experience and we loved it! We slept very well and the food was delicious - you have to be aware that you'll be served Japanese traditional food for dinner and breakfast, we liked it very much and especially the dinner was amazing. We can definitely recommend this place.

SingaporeNothing. It's old premise but we love it as we wanted to experience a not so common experience.
The location is very accessible to the shopping street and just beside it is picturesque sakura and river view. The granny taking care of us was very friendly and patient with our limited Japanese. Food was good. Very sumptous for dinner and breakfast. We were able to use onsen twice, one is the booked private onsen at specific time and the other is the family onsen that if not occupied, you may just walk in to use. Host allows us to deposit bags before check in and also on day of check out when we left hotel early to go day trip to Owakudani black egg.

United KingdomIf anything there was too much food. Especially for breakfast - after a huge meal the night before, we just couldn't eat much of the beautifully presented breakfast. And although we liked it being traditional, found it a bit too fishy for our tastes - and we missed having coffee! The only other negative was that the corners of the rooms were quite dusty and the furnishings a bit tired.
Staying in a traditional ryokan was a treat. We really enjoyed the rooms, with tatami mats and windows overlooking beautiful greenery. The futons were really comfortable and our room had its own onsen, which was fabulous. The evening meals were extraordinary. Beautifully presented, with numerous delicious dishes. If anything there was too much food. The breakfast too was very lavish.
