The staff were really friendly and accommodating! The breakfast was also really good. The facility itself was very homely. The private open-air onsen was relaxing. I think 30-minute increments is just about the right amount of time to enjoy the private open-air onsen, at least for me as a solo traveler.

Friendly staff, good Ryokan experience, close to restaurants, bars, shopping, transport - everything within a few blocks. Information Centre at Beppu station excellent and helpful for getting to attractions. Two days enough but could do more. Loved the experience and private Enson at Yanada Bessou.

It’s a unique experience, but keep in mind that the traditional lifestyle is not convenient. The bathroom and toilet is shared, which may not be suitable for someone cares privacy.

It’s a great way to experience traditional Japanese life. The building itself is charming and antique, and the staff is friendly and helpful. The service is very detail oriented.

Yamada Bessou is a traditional Japanese house which eludes serenity and grace. The rooms were well equipped and was very clean. The onsen facilities were exceptional and excellent. The hotel manager was very friendly and helpful and it made me feel like home. I will come back again.

The host was friendly and helpful in suggesting attractions and restaurants to eat. Yamada Bessou felt very welcoming after a long day sightseeing. The soak in the private outdoor bath was definitely something to look forward to at the end of the day. Well-located so that it is easy to move around town.

It would be nice to add a place to shower in the same space as the outside private bath to encourage people to wash before getting in the "pool".

Unexpected! Excellent service and orientation. A traditional Japanese oasis in the middle of a bustling city with ample parking. A private bath. A great public bath for women. Yukatas and complimentary cute socks. Very nice breakfast. Easy to find.

The hotel is a bit hard to find if you are driving at night. Thank goodness that a staff waited by the visible place and helped to guide us to the hotel.

Breakfast nice and the location is somewhat close to beppu tower and there are some shopping mall, restaurants and train station around within walking distance. Hot spring or public baths are good. The room is big for two persons to move around.

The indoor onsen is a little old, but it is well maintained and clean but we found water a tad too hot that night, but it was just nice when i tried it again in the morning. *Note - This is not a negative comment but follow the GPS (map code) the way in is via a little lane -- it is not a mistake!

Traditional charms - we liked how a bit of the history was explained to us at our arrival and everyone we met spoke excellent English (that is good as we do not speak any Japanese). All the facilities were explained (how to book the outdoor private onsen, etc). We had fun choosing our yukatas (great fitting and beautiful colours for the ladies) and appreciated the toed-socks (free gift! and a great memento of our stay!).

Location: not super close to Station but only 6-7mins walk, quiet location, 3 mins walk to Beppu Tower, Donki (close at 2am) and beach Room and facilities: traditional Japanese house style, clean, private onsen, toilet located outside the room as normal japanese style hotel but just 2 steps away from my room Staff: friendly and speak good English. Provide clear hotel tour when check in. Can left luggage when u arrive early

The staff was certainly the best we had in our Japan trip. Kenji from the start was incredibly helpful and approachable, they even upgraded our room when they got to know that my wife and myself were celebrating our wedding anniversary. All of the other staff was excellent and I felt very privileged to have stayed in Yamada Bessou. I wouldn't hesitate one bit recommending this establishment, I have a very fond memory of it and I will remember this place and people for a long time. Oh yes and the breakfast was exquisite!

We had a wonderful stay in this very welcoming guesthouse. It is a traditional Ryokan maybe with some modern elements depending on the room. We can only highly recommend staying there! It was very relaxing and the atmosphere of the 100 year old house was exceptional. Great breakfast and of course very nice Onsen. The outdoor onsen was even visitable as a couple. Thank you very much, also to the very friendly and helpful staff.

I have stayed at a couple of Ryokan in my life before, but none could compare to Yamada Bessou. It is simply beautiful, it really feels like you’re in your own little pocket of comfort in the middle of Beppu. Location was perfect, Bus station to Jigoku Onsen only a couple of meters away, great restaurants also in the area. You could also rent an e-bike for very little money! My room was gorgeous, the futon very very comfortable and the view simply amazing. If only my writing skills were better, then I could describe the beauty of the outdoor onsen. You definitely have to try it out! The traditional Japanese breakfast was also very good. The entire staff was extremely kind and accommodating, I really wish I could have stayed longer - I’ll definitely be back again!

The staff was exceptionally friendly and we probably had our best breakfast during our 4 week stay of Japan in Yamada Bessou. It was a traditional Japanese breakfast in a beautiful scenery. They even catered to our vegetarian wishes and asked specifically what we can and can't eat. The private Onsen was beautiful and very romantic. We would love to come and visit Beppu again!

We had an eventful day trying to sort out our original planned route from Hakata to Beppu via Yufu as the highway buses and trains were all suspended for the day because of possible flood/landslide alerts due to continuous heavy rainfall. We thought we had to forgo our trip and stay here since we could not get any mode of transport to Beppu. The host/staff is very patient and kind in helping us checked on updates of the situation and let us know of another main train route to Beppu. Kenji-san is fluent in English and it was really easy to communicate during such unforeseen events. We finally arrived in the late evening to this clean, beautiful and well maintained ryokan. A short 7 minutes walk from the station, our garden view Kankaiji (main hall) is cosy and we have a private toilet and wash basin. The shared open air private onsen bath area is clean and well kept. We are glad that we made the effort to Beppu. Thanks to the friendly and helpful lady host/manager, staff and Kenji, our short stay here is pleasant and enjoyable. Breakfast (fresh ingredients) is delicious too!
