Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We are currently testing a weighted review system in Malta and Iceland (excluding hotel and vacation rental chains). For properties in these countries, the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

SingaporeThe onsens are great. The staff is amazing! We forgot a coat and they packed ir and send it to our adress, the package was neat. The food is also great, usually I am not a big fan of Japanese style breakfast, but here it was so delicious that it did not bothered me at all. The portions of food are quite big.

FranceThe dinner is very traditional and local. If you’re looking for a very traditional (but not ultra luxurious experience), this place is perfect. We were served grilled fish (a whole fish) on a plate. Not the most refined meal we’ve had at a ryokan but the experience was fun and the atmosphere was great. They do not have a Western breakfast.
The property is beautiful. The staff were very kind and helpful. The atmosphere was welcoming and relaxing.

DenmarkWould have been great with a small shower in the room.
It was good, but also very Japanese. Perhaps give the possibility to choose a few "Western" add ons.

The staff was attentive and very polite. The room was clean. Onsen was opened throughout the night, outdoor and indoor. Breakfast and dinner were traditional Japanese cuisine and the menu is changed everyday. The onsen works wonders for body fatique (at least speaking for myself). Definitely will return.

Netherlands-
Everything was just perfect. Every little detail was thought off and the staff was absolutely amazing in making my stay become like a dream. The food was amazing too, a well balanced breakfast in the morning and a full on Kaiseki dinner in the evening. I had my own indoor and outdoor Onsen which was also great. It was actually the best stay I've ever had in my entire life.

SingaporeIt's in a secluded-ish mountain area that is not extremely easy to reach but that's also a lot of the charm of the place! And they do have pick up service if you're not driving.
Food was impeccable (though if you're a very conservative eater, perhaps it'll push you a little out of your comfort zone since they serve seasonal and classic Japanese food; I think it's still absolutely worth trying). The place was serene, beautiful, and kept meticulously. Staff was incredibly kind and patient.

ThailandOur room is a literally a house with an open air onsen in the backyard. The public baths are huge, like a swimming pool. They also have private bath for guest use (apart from the one on our room) and they are all very nice. The staff were exceptionally helpful- they went all out to help us to find our transport to Nagasaki when we failed to book our ride back to the JR station. Last but not least the food, it was obvious the food was fresh and delicious. It was very obvious and much care was put in the making and presentation of the food!

United StatesEverything about our stay at Yamashinobu was excellent. The dinner and breakfast provided at the ryokan were delicious, and they accommodated my pescatarian dietary restriction. The public and private onsens were well maintained and very peaceful, as was the outdoor bath in our suite. The staff were all welcoming, friendly, and helpful. The location was great—close enough to walk to the town of Kurokawa Onsen but far enough to be very quiet and peaceful. We appreciated being picked up and dropped off at the bus. It is a little far from Fukuoka and Kumamoto, but getting there by bus is very easy and inexpensive. If you have the time to visit, I highly recommend doing so.

ThailandI think the kaiseki dinner should have wagyu beef or Taraba crab would make the meal more special. Anyway, the dinner was very nice and delicious.
Great Ryokan! Way beyond my expectation - 3 private onsen rooms you can use without reservation and 2 public onsen. - Rooms are spacious, new, and comfortable. There is Kotatsu table in the room, very warm and cozy! - There are lovely facilities you can use and experience such as star observatory, library, and the vintage fireplace room that has free sake serving! - Staffs are very polite and helpful.

JapanEverything was great, the only big problem is that its about a 10 minute drive to the main Kurokawa area, so I would highly suggest renting a car.
I travelled with my husband and 9 month old, and our stay was fantastic! We booked a private room, with dinner and breakfast included, and I'm so glad we did. The food was amazing, a great mix of Kumamoto local cuisine (basashi, and karashi renkon) with some wonderful Japanese staples (sashimi, soba and udon, miso soup). The staff were so kind to us, and when my daughter got a little fussy (tired) they would come by to make her smile and giggle. It was really appreciated. If you are traveling with a baby or young child I do think booking a private room as better, because the other outdoor onsens are great, but there isn't an area to change your baby when you get in and out of the bath, so it can be a little chilly. (Maybe more applicable to winter, spring-summer is probably fine).
