Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We are currently testing a weighted review system in Malta and Iceland (excluding hotel and vacation rental chains). For properties in these countries, the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

AustraliaThe staff gave the most amazing hospitality. Our room was amazing and it was great being able to soak in multiple onsen. The dinner was incredible, both in taste and experience. Cannot recommend Yoshimatsu highly enough and it was well worth the money we paid, for a special occasion.

United KingdomWe had a wonderful time staying at this stunning ryokan. The rooms and the garden are beautiful, traditional, and curated in every detail. Our room had a terrace with a private onsen, which was extremely convenient and personal. As a couple, we also tried the private onsen in the gardens at 6am and caught gorgeous views of mount Fuji. Against what some reviews say, there is no need to book this private onsen - a lantern shows if it is in use by others or available. The kaiseki dinner and the breakfast were of very high-standard, unique, delicious, beautifully made and presented. The staff were extremely kind and attentive, no issues with English, just really great care which started right at the point of arrival with greeting and refreshements. We were travelling to Matsumoto the next day to our stay and the staff went out of their way to recommend us the best trains to take. We were really made to feel special, and hope to be back in the future.

United StatesThe hand massage was fully booked by the time of arrival. I wasn't aware that I had to make a reservation for them as they're only available starting from 4:00 pm till sometime in the night. Also, I didn't really like that in addition to the high nightly charge, the drinks from the fridge and the drinks from the dinner menu cost money.
The dinner, breakfast, and onsen were all amazing! I also liked the massage chairs that were right outside of the public onsen. The staff were also very attentive and assisted me the moment my foot stepped foot on the property!

United StatesThe hotel is tucked away a few minutes walk from other things in Hakone (ie not right against the lake or on a major road), which can be a plus or negative depending on your preference.
Such exceptional staff, who made us feel welcomed even from the start. We arrived early, so they served us snacks and tea while we waited (and spoke really good English!). The Japanese Kaiseki style dinner was served to us in our room, and featured many different amazing courses. Our room also had a private Onsen which was just what we needed to relax following a hike up Mt Fuji the day before.

United StatesOur family of three (mom, dad, and teen daughter) stayed for two nights / one day at this traditional onsen ryokan to celebrate dad's birthday. The staff were attentive and helpful. The facilities were very nice with beautiful landscaping and koi ponds, etc. We splurged on the "Japanese-Style Corner Room with Outdoor Hot Spring” and were glad we did. It consisted of one main room where we had our meals, a second bedroom, a small sitting room, and our own outdoor bath! We also enjoyed visiting the public baths on site. The lovely woman who served us all our meals (Rena?) was sweet, friendly and laughed easily. The numerous courses of the kaiseki meals were obviously carefully prepared and plated - our compliments to the chef! Some dishes might not be to the taste of every foreigner but fortunately we love Japanese food and are game to try new things. (Note: It was a heck of A LOT of food, for breakfast and especially for dinner, so difficult if not impossible for us to finish everything.) This was an wonderful experience we will always remember. ありがとうございます

United StatesI have no idea what could have been better. It really was exceptional in every way.
Exceptional stay for a 1 night splurge. Our 7yo is asking when we can return. The dinner was truly amazing - lots of seafood, but several options for people of varying palettes. Plus they offered a kid's dinner basket that also included a cheesy casserole and other things that were more appealing to our kid. Breakfast was also lovely, but we were rushed to leave because it was foggy & the tourist info person at the train station had advised us to get on the Pirate Ship and Ropeways before the high winds were forecast for mid-day. We did the clockwise tourist loop & loved it all. The ryokan is walking distance from the bus stop / ship port. Thanks so much Yoshimatsu for a truly wonderful stay!

Breakfast and dinner were all very delicious - you could tell how much care went into the preparation. I was upgraded to a room with a private onsen and that was absolutely spectacular. The onsen even had a view of Mt. Fuji! Finally, the staff was exceptional - they were very receptive and were eager to help with anything and everything I needed. My room was clean and quiet. Even though this is very much a "treat yourself" experience, I would stay here again in a heartbeat!

United StatesThe staff at Yoshimatsu went above and beyond to ensure we had an enjoyable experience - we were blown away by their friendliness and level of service. The property was beautiful and serene, and was the perfect location for what we were interested in - 3 minute walk to Lake Ashi (we were able to see Mt. Fuji) and about a 30 minute stroll to the famous tori gate. The onsen baths were also relaxing and the kaseiki meal was delicious. We particularly enjoyed our personal attendant who served our meals and took care of the turndown service. This was a definite highlight of our trip to Japan.

GermanyWe wanted to use the private onsen. However, you can‘t make a pre-reservation and just go there, once it‘s free. As we only stayed for one night, it stressed us a little bit. There was a couple that used the private onsen very long (like two hours). However, after dinner it was free, so we could finally do it.
The service is absolutely awesome. the staff is super friendly and trying to make everything possible. They are super friendly and comforting. Although we were new to Japanese culture we could ask everything and never felt out of place. We had a kaiseky-like dinner. My fish was exceptional. My wife couldn’t eat seafood, so they changed the menu and incorporated steak, which was also very delightful. The location is very good to explore Hakone. It‘s a short walk to the river to get on the boat. The public bath is very good as well.

United KingdomAs far as the hotel goes - nothing at all. If possible, perhaps the owners could persuade their neighbours to reduce the height of some trees so you have an even better view of the lake.
The room, food and onsen are all really very good but the staff are exceptional; they are so thoughtful and caring.

United StatesThe food, the room and above all the service from our wonderful room attendant, Eri-san, were all exceptional. The kaiseki dinner here is comparable to top starred restaurants and the room is quite spacious, comfortable and overlooking a serene garden with a private onsen. Eri-san was the real standout, making us feel welcomed from the moment we set foot in the room. She made us feel at home throughout the stay with warm tea every time we came back to our room and upbeat banter with her cheery personality. Communication was no problem at all through a bit of gesturing and google translate. Thank you to all the staff and especially Eri-san for the wonderful memories!

I've been to quite a few onsen ryokan and this one is the best one by far! The service was excellent, from arrival to departure, all the staff were so attentive. When we arrived, the hotel staff helped us parked our car and matcha and japanese sweets was served while checking in. When we arrived in our room, our luggage was already there! Dinner and breakfast were served in the room, my husband even had a massage done which was also done in the room. The onsen was amazing, we could have a little view of mount fuji if it wasn't cloudy. When we left out room to check out, hotel staff was already there to take our luggage. Everything was so perfect!
