Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We are currently testing a weighted review system in Malta and Iceland (excluding hotel and vacation rental chains). For properties in these countries, the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

CanadaI loved almost everything about this hotel. The most notable is the onsen, which has a variety of hot and cold baths that melt away the tiredness of the day. Their Japanese style breakfast and dinners are amazing. I also loved the yukata they would provide every day and the snacks and tea that they would restock in our room. So happy we stayed here!

United KingdomWas fine for us but the room was such that all 5 of us were in the same space, no separated sleeping areas. Could be an issue if you had light sleepers in your party.
Very good Japanese breakfast and would also highly recommend visiting the restaurant at least once for dinner as they have a great menu. Also had soft and alcoholic drink vending machines which were handy. Staff were very helpful. Our luggage was waiting in our room on arrival from a luggage delivery and they helped us arrange onward delivery to our next hotel also. Everyone spoke good English so communication was easy. Location near the JR line was good, used it every day as a jumping off point into the city and there are also some good bus routes also only a 5 mins walk away including one direct to Ginkaku-Ji which we used.

SingaporeNothing.
The onsen hot spring feels traditional and good. It is big and there are 2 onsen themes - wooden based and rock based. They are switched for use by male and female guests daily, giving us the opportunity to try out both even with just a night's stay. They advertised the room size based only on the bedroom, but when added the space for the closet and toilet /bathroom, the overall room turned out to be a lot more spacious than advertised.

SingaporeAs the location is a 10-minute walk away from train station and buses, we have to be careful when walking back during the night. The pillows comfortability can be improved.
Friendly and fluent English speaking staff. Onsen was a great experience for a first timer like me and looks clean. The whole ryokan looks newly renovated. Clean rooms and clean reception. The bathroom in our room was huge. Kaiseiki meal was better than expected. The food was well balanced in taste and texture. Staff at the restaurant speak fluent english. Overall, this accommodation exceeded my expectations. It is highly recommended. We wish we could stay longer.

AustraliaDidn’t like the rule of having to pick a breakfast slot at 7.30/8/8.30, and to be called in the room when 10 mins late
Great experience for a night or so, at a fair price (especially considering the facilities like the onsen). Would not recommend for longer stays as it’s quite far away from most sites to visit in Kyoto

Kazakhstan1. It was quite cold in the building outside the rooms 2. We were asked twice to pay for breakfasts when we have already paid for it on Booking 3. Not so many cafes and convenience stores nearby
1. Yukata in the room for each person :) 2. Everyday high-quality cleaning 3. Onsen is not the best we’ve been to, but nevertheless very good. There is also an outdoor bath 3. Amazing breakfasts that were changed everyday 4. Polite personnel that helped us to call a taxi, accepted our luggage from Tokyo

United StatesIt would be nice if meals were included in the total cost rather than as an extra to add on, but I completely understand why they aren’t and it is definitely worth it to pay extra for them.
The staff was so accommodating, the rooms were so comfortable, the facilities were amazing, and the food was delicious. It was so comfortable sleeping on the futons and the amenities left in our rooms each day went above my expectations, as did the size and quality of our traditional style room and private bathroom. It was easy to get to the hotel from the metro station- and to visit any sightseeing via metro- and there are vending machines inside and close by as well as a convenience store if you need anything in the off hours. The staff was also kind enough to store our bags since we arrived earlier than check in the first day, and when we returned that evening check in was easy and we found they had already been kind enough to put our bags in our room. The onsen was so easy to access and we loved having it in the building, it was also very accessible and felt very welcoming as a foreign guest. We enjoyed it each day, so much that we found we didn’t even need any additional spa services because we were so content. We had a dinner and three breakfasts here and each meal was better than the last, and the staff was very accommodating of the toddler traveling with us. It seemed like our final breakfast was made to be even more special as they knew it was our last. If you want traditional Japanese meals than this is definitely worth the little extra to spend, and it made the start of every day so easy and calm. I would definitely recommend this ryokan to anyone staying in Kyoto, whether you want a traditional experience or not it is simply the best option out there either way. I definitely hope I get the chance to stay here again in the future. Thank you so much to all of the staff!

IrelandUnfortunately, the staff at the restaurant wasn't approachable and were even hiding to avoid serving us although we arrived before the last order could be taken (delay due to the shower issue we had in the first room). The restaurant was supposed to close by 10pm but it even closed by the time of the last order (9:00pm).
We initially had a bigger room but unfortunately the hot water in the shower wasn't working so we changed rooms. It was still comfy but a bit smaller. A huge shout out to the receptionist who was very attentive and kind at all times. They provided water, tea and snacks every day. The onsen was good and the accommodation is close to the metro station.
