Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We are currently testing a weighted review system in Malta and Iceland (excluding hotel and vacation rental chains). For properties in these countries, the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

GermanyThe drink menu could be bigger - also to attract people to try other japanese drinks. Food is great, what could make, especially the western guests, happier is the desert that can really need improvement, even if they are similar to lawson/family mart like cake and desert. The rim of the bathtub needs to be bleached or cleaner.
The facilities are well kept. Love the old Japan hotel feeling with clean, comfortable and unpretentious decorations. A car stop at entrance plus a close by car park in addition to the bigger car park. Staff at check in is professional and at breakfast are great. At dinner, food was nicely presented and it is also a pleasant experience with some selection of sake. Sofa chair in the room we booked extra for was clean and nice! Thank you.

We stayed in a deluxe twin room which was large and very comfortable. Great food experience for dinner and breakfast. The natural onsen was amazing, and was one of the main reasons we went here. Large baths inside and out, with a lovely outlook.

United StatesOur plan didn’t include dinner. A staff didn’t know which restaurants open. We had to call each restaurant. She gave us a map without any instruction. We wish she would have give us more directions about the town.
Nice bath. They offer free drinks. That was especially nice after taking bath. Breakfast was excellent. Staffs at the restaurant were nice and friendly. Location is perfect for skiers but outsides of onsen areas. It will be 10-15 minutes walk.

United StatesWestern-style beds are much bigger and softer than Japanese "beddos" (mattresses instead of futon). This is something to expect when staying at a Ryokan. Travelers who are unfamiliar with Japanese beds might be shocked by the firmness of the mattress. I recommend asking for extra
The location is beautiful and the staff was incredibly kind, patient and accommodating. They were able to help us set up a private onsen experience, ensured we had everything we needed, and were very helpful. Limited English options for speaking but most things had English translations for guests who are new to Japanese or struggle with Kanji.

The service was excellent. From front desk to dining to housekeeping. Everyone was very friendly and all smiles. The rooms were very clean, spacious and new. The private and foot bath were great. I especially loved that the hotel does not have many rooms so service is personal and the baths and dining areas were not crowded

United KingdomThey won’t serve you food or provide options if you do not choose full board. Finding an open place at night was a quest. While the place is nice, it starts giving “old hotel” vibes
They were willing to pick us up and drop us back to the bus terminal upon shortest notice. Bathes were really nice, breakfast was immaculate

ThailandWe saw a picture of a private onsen on the hotel website and made a reservation to use one. However, the ambiance is not quite the same as depicted in the picture. In the picture, the private onsen is very bright and new. However, when we entered the private onsen, it was not clean and quite old. So it was a little bit of a disappointment.
We really like the food. Especially the dinner. Since our group doesn't eat beef, at the time of check-in, we asked the hotel staff if they could amend the menu for us. They were able to do that and we had our dinner with a set of grilled seafood which was very delicious and beyond our expectations.

GermanyAlmost nothing to mention here. The rooms are cozy but maybe a little outdated.
The hotel offers great onsen facilities. Public baths: 1 indoor pool and 2 outdoor pools as well as 3 private facilities. The rooms are spacious and the staff is extremely polite and helpful. They offer a free shuttle bus service to and from Yamagata station which has to be reserved 3 days in advance. Wonderful dinner which was included in our room rate and very good and copious breakfast.
