Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We are currently testing a weighted review system in Malta and Iceland (excluding hotel and vacation rental chains). For properties in these countries, the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

AustraliaAll the traditional inns have very thin walls and creaky floors so you need to be very quiet. Something to keep in mind.
This is a beautiful little guesthouse in an excellent location, right in the heart of it all but still tucked away and quiet. I regret not using the communal areas as it’s got a great vibe. Wish they had vacancies so I could’ve stayed more than one night. The host was also extremely helpful and had excellent English. Would definitely stay again.

United KingdomI have a lovely time at Giokoh, it was the best night sleep I had on my holiday! The facilities were excellent, the bath being my highlight. Hiro was a lovely host, I felt so welcomed. A big plus was the location, only a short walk to Kiyomizu-dera and the thousand tori gates. I will definitely be coming back when I next visit Kyoto!

Hiro the manager has been great. Speaks good English, very helpful. He explained everything to me, help me find traditional bath houses, and even helped me to book taxi to Kyoto Station! The place is also great, clear and traditional Japanese. The room overlooks into the small japanese garden, which has pond and Koi. Location is also great. 3min walk and you are at Gion of Kyoto. Highly recommended!

AustraliaElderly people may struggle with steep stairs and low /floor Japanese bedding. Mine struggled a bit but she enjoyed the rest! This is obviously not a Host issue, but something to consider if have elderly travelling with you.
Room was exactly as described, clean and had a wonderful view of the garden. There are 5 separate rooms at this lovely house and we had our own lockable room which was convenient. There is a share kitchen which was generally quiet so we felt happy when we would meet others as they came and left the house. The street and area comes alive with people, particularly on the weekend as there is a Shrine very close, and at other times is relaxing to walk around with convenience stores and laundry coin op shop very close too. We all had a wonderful time here. The Host was wonderful too. Thanks!

PhilippinesNothing major. The mattress was a bit soft (for me) but the weighted blanket was bliss! Compared to the shower room with hot and cold water, the wash area's faucet does not seem to have it. Water can be really cold.
There's a lot to love about the property. Foremost, the modern, well-maintained and clean essential facilities without compensating the Japanese authenticity of the place. We love dining in the kitchen and hanging out in the patio overlooking the garden. Although the bath is shared, it has decent space as well as privacy. The bedroom was spacious with coffee table that isn't cramped. Smell of old books and history will greet you at the reception. Secondly, proximity. It was very close to the pagoda, temple and park. We went on foot to most of our destination. Near bus stop, cafe, grocery and convenience store. There is also a coin-operated laundry service nearby. Most importantly, we love the outstanding service of Hiro. He gave us a tour of the place. We felt very welcome and his thoughtfulness was one of a kind. This is our top stay out of 5 properties that we've been to.

AustraliaWe absolutely loved our stay at Gionkoh. It is so unique and had so much character, the love and care for the place was obvious. Our room was way larger than I expected and incredible value for the price, there were so many personal touches and beautiful art. The location couldn't have been better for a tourist stay, situated in the heart of old town and surrounded by temples and traditional buildings. Hiro was so kind, welcoming and accommodating - he shared that his Grandmother had opened the guest house originally many years ago, and he has continued the tradition. Will absolutely be staying here next time we return to Tokyo.

United StatesIt's a 15 minute walk uphill from the train stations so bringing large suitcases here can be difficult. If you can secure a taxi, you should be fine but it's something you should prepare for.
The style of the guesthouse was very elegant. I liked the low lighting and traditional Japanese feel. The host, Hiro, was extremely nice and very helpful. The neighborhood was beautiful and fun to walk around. We had easy access to the shrines. I would definitely stay here again!

Traditional stay in the best neighborhood in Kyoto. We had the family room, and there was a koi pond to look out onto! Hiro (the host) was incredible. So nice, and brought us extra blankets when we requested. We came in the winter, so it is cold, but there is a heater in the room and bathroom. 10/10 best stay in kyoto!

AustraliaLoved Gionkoh. Will definitely start again and let others know about it. Hiro was an excellent host. His recommendations of where to eat were delicious and very reasonably priced. We were a family of 5 and one night has an extra person stay and the family room with private facilities was perfect. It is close to everything you want to see and buy in Kyoto. Cannot fault this place. Reasonably priced.
