Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We are currently testing a weighted review system in Malta and Iceland (excluding hotel and vacation rental chains). For properties in these countries, the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

CanadaNothing really! I added a person to the reservation last minute and wasn’t aware that they charged per person, but the staff were very kind and patient in explaining that hotels in Japan often charge per person instead of per room.
The views from the rooms are amazing. Outdoor hot springs were amazing. Vinyl room was beautiful. The staff were great!

AustraliaNothing! We had a great time.
The lady who communicated with us was very polite and pleasant to speak with. The staff were very good. We appreciated the mountain view we had and our private onsen, as well as the yukata, and the breakfast. Hojicha latte was so good!

AustraliaThey don’t have shuttle service and no dinner restaurant as they are having very short staffs. But you can walk back up hills to the station to catch the bus or train to another town for food or bring back to it in their self serve kitchen. Remember to check the last train and bus to go back to the hotel as everything closes early. And most of the restaurants may not accept children. No washing machine to rent or laundry services. Make sure you bring enough clothes if you have young children with you but don’t pack big luggage as it will be very hard to travel with big luggages like us. We have no choices as we travel everywhere from Tokyo to Hakone then Osaka and back to Tokyo.
The staffs were very helpful to help for a lift to the station and help us to call the bus station to find our lost pram from the last bus when we arrived.

United KingdomI'd appreciate a plunge pool or a couple of alternative baths. The breakfast choice was quite limited and pastries were quite stale.
Beautiful room with mountainside view. Onsen was a bit small and only had one bath but it was nice nonetheless (and nicely decorated).

United StatesIt was slightly hard to find, but not too bad. You'll pass a sloped driveway leading to old abandoned buildings a small ways before the real entrance.
Super serene, small little onsen off the beaten path. Not crowded at all. Loved how chill it was, loved the room, the tea, the baths of course, and the incredibly curated, cultured, & kind of whimsical lounge.

United KingdomPossibly could have been closer for the main hakone free pass trip, but still a good area. I unfortunately didn't get time to use the onsen so cannot judge that.
Very spacious and lovely room, comfortable futon beds. Brilliant Japanese style shower room and toilet. Nice free breakfast and the staff were very nice and helpful, one guy helping me with dinner on the first night, speaking good English too! Close to the train station/bus stop and a nice Izakaya nearby.

AustraliaThe only negative would be the location, but it is great to be away from a busy town. It is just a short walk along the road from the train and bus stop. A lovely Izakaya nearby.
Beautifully clean and relaxing atmosphere. Very relaxing and provided with the robes for onsen. Quiet and up in the trees.

Bulgariathe location is a bit isolated - there aren't any very nice restaurants nearby so you need to take the bus or train to one; the water in the outdoor bath was a bit too hot for my taste - couldn't soak all in
very helpful staff - they arranged my luggage transfer and accomodated all my requests; the room is big and the mountain view was just amazing!; there are not one but two common baths - indoor and outdoors; they serve a nice pastry breakfast (free) in the morning; craft beer vending machine on site!

CanadaThe only thing that made it difficult for us to travel was the location. It is in middle of a very steep slope and 10mins walk from the nearest bus stop. And not to mention the typical super narrow street (very common in Japan), so if u don’t have a car it could be difficult. But that’s it.
We’re from Canada and I brought my Brazilian roomie with me to visit my home country. I truly liked the hot spring and how it’s not a “too touristy” location. We were there in the holiday season but because it’s a hidden jem Ryokan, we were able to have both the “daiyokujo” and “Roten buro” all to ourselves (we did go late at night and early morning). They also have 24h ashiyu (foot hot tub) which was super awesome. I had beer while planning for the next day and just chilled there all by myself for an hr.

JapanOnce you get off the Ohiradai station, you'd have to walk around 5 minutes to get to the inn. The road for pedestrians was extremely narrow and the cars driving by were scary.
The inn was clean and had a relaxing atmosphere. The onsen was not crowded and very well maintained. The staff were friendly, spoke good English and gave very clear housing instructions. Given the price of this stay, it's well worth your hard-earned money.

AustraliaWe have to walk through a short side path along the road to reach the hotel and this could be some safety concerns when at night time or busy traffic time. I noticed drivers did slow down when they noticed that we were walking along the road but there is no proper crossing.
The staff is super nice and helpful. The hotel is close to train station and very quiet & comfortable to stay. They have open air foot bath open for 24 hours, which is absolutely bonus.

CanadaThis didn't bother me but it could be annoying to others that they do not serve dinner here so make sure you understand that. One annoying this is the location, getting there by foot a bit annoying from the station since the sidewalk is one person wide. The only other complaint is that the outdoor onsen does not have much of an atmosphere (no view) its just a clean open air onsen surrounded by tall wooden walls.
This was a great little gem of a place. It is modern and clean so it doesn't feel like a run down place. The room we got had an amazing view of the autumn foliage so I can only imagine what it looks like in other seasons. It has 1 outdoor onsen, 1 indoor onsen and 1 footbath. There is a kitchen if you'd like to cook yourself and they provide small baked goods and coffee/tea/juice for breakfast.

United StatesThe stay at Hakone Suisen alone made it worthwhile to travel to Hakone. The room, property, and onsens are great. The staff are wonderful and do a great job of being attentive while giving you plenty of space and freedom to enjoy yourself. While there's not much to do/eat within walking distance, the hotel is only a short bus ride away from Gora or Hakone Yumoto. The breakfast selection while small was delicious and as a bonus they had awesome specialty coffee.
