Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We are currently testing a weighted review system in Malta and Iceland (excluding hotel and vacation rental chains). For properties in these countries, the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

IndiaThe food options in the property were limited and while the Sri Lankan food was extremely tasty, we thought it wasn’t over-all value for money
The location, the maintenance of the property, the helpful staff (especially the property manager), the beautiful lawn, and the colonial style rooms!

Very spacious and comfortable- 6 bedrooms with very large lounge spaces to accommodate any kind of leisure. Set on very large private grounds the property is very peaceful and relaxing yet close to the town and main attractions. We were very lucky to be the only guests for 3 days and were pampered by the wonderful Roshan and his team. Superb cooking, fabulous house keeping, a welcoming fire and a wake up pot of tea to our room first thing. Roshan also arranged transport and laundry for us. Couldn’t have asked for more.

Being welcomed by the Ferncliff team is a start of a very warm and caring stay in one of the gloriously historical styled rooms. During your stay nothing is left to chance and both rooms and services are well cared for. High recommendation!

United KingdomFerncliff Bungalow is a very special place to stay and probably my favourite guesthouse in Sri Lanka. It's small (four rooms) which means you are extremely well-looked after by Bernard and his team. The bungalow is spacious with large rooms and a cosy communal dining area (complete with an open fire). The limited number of rooms means maximum flexibility when it comes to arrival, departure and all your meals. Bernard kindly prepared a packed lunch for our young children to eat on the train. The gardens are well-maintained and a welcome open (but safe) space for kids to let off steam.

Amazing place!!! The house in the Colonial style is situated in a big garden, with wonderful flowers and trees. The room was large and tasted furnished. The breakfast and the dinner were amazing. At night the host even opened the fire place and light the candles. One of our nicest places we stayed in Sri Lanka. We highly recommend this place!

Beautiful period property and garden. Bernard and his team were extremely accommodating - they cleaned our muddy walking boots and put hot water bottles in our bed in the evening. The food is fantastic, served in a lovely dining room with a roaring fire. Located near Victoria Park and 10 mins walk to the centre of town.

RussiaA wonderful place to relax with a rich history. The atmosphere takes you to 19th century England. Excellent staff will always help, prompt and conduct a tour of the territory. The house itself is the residence of the first governor of Sri Lanka, while the layout has remained unchanged for several centuries. Very tasty dishes, some vegetables and fruits from their own garden! And the shocking pudding is incredible. Thank you, I want to stay in this house for a long time!

United KingdomWe couldn’t stay longer.
It couldn’t be faulted. Home of the last Governor of Ceylon. Very old English Colonial . Rooms all very elegant, furnished with antiques .The bedrooms very comfortable. The gardens unique with fabulous views . Only a short walk from the town. The staff are delightful. Dinish, the chef and manager, produces delicious food, both Sri Lankan and international. He is ably supported by Roshan. If you want a large or modern hotel, don’t come here.

United KingdomVery uncomfortable bed in first rm. Manager helped us move rooms on 2 nd night . Beds better but so so dark even in the day . Very gloomy . Decor very dark and dated .If you like brightness this is not a good place to stay . Dining in the eve was similar to eating in a library . Overpriced and over rated in reviews in our view. A lot of noise from local area carried at night.
Very helpful property manager. Lovely gardens . Good breakfast Good shower Complimentary water. Location ok for walking to town in day and Tuk Tuk
