Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We are currently testing a weighted review system in Malta and Iceland (excluding hotel and vacation rental chains). For properties in these countries, the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.

By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

Germany10 of 10! We stayed 5 nights at Hill Safari with our two little boys. The scenery is amazing. The garden with all the flowers is very relaxing. We were able to do some hikes directly from the apartment. Thank you very much for your warm hospitality and the fanstastic food!

PortugalOne of our holiday highlights. We stayed in the upper apartment “Silver Tips” which was very modern and clean. And the view was amazing, even from the shower! Super friendly staff and amazing food: For dinner we got tasty rice and curry and for breakfast delicious egg-hoppers while overviewing the tea fields and mountaintops around. This accommodation is very close on the Pekoe Trail that we walked, we stayed only one night but we would have loved to stay longer… The area offers a lot of great hikes and magical tranquility far from touristy zones. They serve their own tea from the plantation which has organic quality, all grown naturally.

FranceIf you like to be outside the crowd just go there few days to enjoy hiking in the Horton plains area. You will be alone and happy in this nature. All staff is very kind. At 30mns car distance from Ohyia. Better to reach it before night as the last miles are not easy.

GermanyThe location within the tea plantations is perfect with a breathtaking view down to the plains. The staff is friendly and helpful and the food is great. Rooms are spacious and very clean with a wonderful view from the bed. The owners organise a Tuk-Tuk for a whole day for a reasonable price. We started our trip to Horton Plains very early (5:45) and were provided with breakfast boxes. The owner takes ecology protection seriously, no plastic bottles or plastic bags are being provided.

Czech RepublicThis hotel is in really a gorgeous location with beautiful views, very authentic and peaceful and it's a place I would recommend staying at least two nights to fully appreciate the surroundings. The owners are very kind and attentive, providing clean drinking water. The hotel provide stunning views where you can enjoy a cup of tea. The food is always tailored to what we feel like eating, featuring breathtaking natural scenery, sunsets, and evening mists. The staff was very accommodating and pleasant. Dinner was excellent, especially thanks to the chef named Nuwan, whose culinary skills truly enhanced our experience. I also recommend visiting the school in the local village and bringing candy and especially pencils for the children. 🙂

United StatesAn electric Kettle in the room would have been helpful. But they brought Tea to the room, and therefore it wasn't a big issue.
We had an excellent stay at Hill Safari. Hosts Eomal and his wife and staff Nuwan are very kind, friendly, and helpful. The location is an excellent place for Horton Plains and many other hiking trails. Also, the views around the property are excellent - tea plantations, farms, mountains, and long distance views as well. Eomal, who has lived there over 40 years, is very knowledgeable about the area and all the hiking opportunities. Home cooked dinner and lunch were very tasty. He arranged our travel logistics to the Horton Plains and to the Train station.

United KingdomThe rooms could do with a bit of a refresh; new lick of paint, update amenities etc but everything worked well. More generally, we would have loved to learn more about the tea plantation itself but there wasn’t an opportunity to do so.
The location of Hill Safari is utterly stunning. Remote, nestled away in the hills, surrounded by great walks. Steven and the team make you feel right at home. They are so immensely helpful, working out walking routes, always making sure you’re well fed with the most delicious food and that all your needs are catered for. We absolutely loved our 4 days there and we were sad to leave. Strongly recommend staying here!

IrelandNothing to dislike.
It was a bit of a mission to get there, but it was so worth it. The most secluded, tranquil and beautiful place we have visited in Sri Lanka so far. Small place and the staff looked after us so well especially Stephen he is so knowledge about the area and nothing is a problem. He drove us to Hortons Plains for sunrise and to Ohiya for our train to Ella. So kind. Hortons Plains is an amazing experience so different to anything else in Sri Lanka, a cloud forest with spectacular views in the morning early. Then lovely afternoon tea on the terrace back at the hotel. If you want peace and quiet and stunning scenery, this is the place for you.

United KingdomIt is quite difficult to get to and requires full dependency on staff to drive you from a to b. There is nothing in walking distance. The road that leads directly to the house needs proper maintenance.
The property offers amazing views and is very close to Horton Plains. The staff provided excellent hospitality. Value for money is excellent just bear in mind that facilities are relatively basic.

Once we arrived (our driver struggled with the path to get to the hotel however we were collected by the hotel owners) we were immediately greeted with fresh locally produced tea. Our room offered the most beautiful views across the striking mountains, altitude 1800m++, taking in local tea plantations and vegetable allotments. With the bed facing out to the mountain view through a glass wall, this was an incredible sight to wake up to. The veranda allowed an unforgettable opportunity for star gazing, no light pollution so I saw stars like I hadn't seen for decades. Dinner was served to order with home cooked local Sri Lanka food offered in large and generous portions, vegetables grown in the hotel's own strictly organic vegetable garden. We took a Tuk Tuk (arranged by Hill Safari) to the entrance of Horton Plains, getting an early start to begin what would end up being 5 hours of absolutely beautiful hiking. The hotel provided breakfast (no plastic as required by the park) and we enjoyed this part way through our walk. The fast Tuk tuk rides across broken mountain roads will also be an indelible memory! To help with the journey back, the hotel arranged for a Tuk Tuk (at a reasonable charge) to take us to the local train station (Ohiya) so that our driver could collect us from there to take us on to Colombo.

BelgiumWe are a Belgian family (father and 2 adult children) travelling through Sri Lanka in summer 2023. Looking for a hotel at walking distance from the Horton Plains National Park we ended up in the Hill Safari Tea Estate Hotel. At the Ohiya train station (approx. 5 km from the hotel) we were picked up by the owner, Mr Perera, who was very welcoming and knowledgeable about the site. The hotel, located in a tea plantation, has a fantastic view on the Sri Lankan lowlands (comparable to that at World’s End). Just note that the hotel is quite remotely located and therefore food is taken on site (food is excellent!). We organized a trip to the Horton Plains, going (early morning) by tuktuk and returning by foot (watch out for sunburn on the way back!). We can only be (very) positive about the hotel, the owners, and the staff.

The rooms were spotless and very comfortable, the gardens and views were lovely. It is quite remote but close to Horton Plains.
