Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We are currently testing a weighted review system in Malta and Iceland (excluding hotel and vacation rental chains). For properties in these countries, the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

There was only 1 electrical plug in the room so it was difficult for us to charge our devices. Also, wifi was quite slow. So we had to rely on the local data we bought for our mobiles (Dialog 4G, SLTMobitel didn't have good reception either). This seems to be common problem throughout many of the Homestays in Sri Lanka.
The owner was very welcoming when we checked in and had a great spot for parking a small car. We also had dinner there which was really delicious! Very good options for vegetarian and meat dishes. During dinner, the couple made casual chit chat with us and served us the dishes on the plate and asked us to eat more - feels very homely and like having dinner with your grandma and grandpa. They also served beer with the dinner if you like. Breakfast was also great - some sweet sri lankan hoppers and fruit. Air conditioning in the room was also strong and the Mosquito net worked great. Location is really close to the ancient city and the lake. You can see a beautiful sunset from the lake and overlook some rice padi fields.

New ZealandNothing. Town itself, from train station to temple site, has nothing to recommend it. Stay off the main street as it’s really noisy and busy.
Great location tucked down a little lane very close to temple museum and ticket office. Owners arranged bike hire and car to Kandy via Sigirryia, as well as excellent breakfasts and dinner on our 2nd night. Air con worked a treat as was very hot

United StatesI needed to do some remote work which was hampered by not having a desk in the room and poor Wi-Fi signal. The listing said it included an electric kettle which was in the locked kitchen, so it was not convenient to make hot water when we wanted (we usually go through 6 pots in a day because it’s so hot!) Hostess tried to add a service charge for electricity but I only paid what my Booking reservation indicated.
Clean room, comfortable bed, short walk from clock tower, tasty breakfast of local specialties. Fascinating to watch the fruit bats come back to roost in the tall tree near the main road.

Czech RepublicNothing comes to mind.
Great place to stay for a few days in Polonnaruwa, especially thanks to the very friendly and welcoming owners. The room is simple, but it has all you need, the food was absolutely delicious (both dinner and breakfast) and the owners even arranged a bike rental (the house is very close to all the major sights in Polonnaruwa) and a ride to safari park for us for very reasonable prices.

Location is perfect, very close to ancient city ticket office. Bus stops are within short distance as well. The room is very clean and fully functional, and the owners are extremely kind and caring, they will even provide a bicycle to visit surroundings. Look no further for your stay in Polonnaruwa.

CanadaWe were treated like family. It felt like our home. The family who owns and operates the hotel are the nicest, sweetest people we met in Sri Lanka. The hotel has good AC, reliable hot water, is clean and has a nice breakfast. It is in a quiet neighborhood very close to the ruins, and you can walk to the reservoir to watch gorgeous sunsets. The family was a highlight of our trip to Sri Lanka. We cannot thank them enough.

SingaporeIn a quiet lane just a couple of minutes walk from the prominent Clock Tower junction in the old town, great & helpful hosts; just over 100m walk to the scenic lake for sunset; and so near and convenient cycle to the ancient city ruins. The hosts prepared delicious breakfast and meals, help arranged tours and onward transport.

Hosts were very helpful with tips (how to slice a Sri Lankan pineapple we bought from a roadside stand) and tips about getting around the ancient site. Very quiet but monkeys are an issue for the inhabitants. Tuktuk tour of the ancient city with frequent stops was easily organised and very enjoyable.

United KingdomGreat location, close to the lake and the museum (to get tickets for the ancient city). Our host offered a much needed beer on arrival after a long journey from Trincomalee. The mosquito net was very effective. After a huge breakfast we hired bikes from the host and toured the ancient city.

New ZealandRoom was dark and many mosquitoes due to location. The breakfast was the worst so far in Sri Lanka - they provide toast and other item ( roti or hoppers) with jam and butter and a couple of bananas with tea. Most places will provide a fresh juice/ omelette/dahl with hoppers etc. Wifi is very bad.
Room was clean and comfortable and owners were very friendly and helpful. The location close to the lake and ancient city was excellent.
