Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We are currently testing a weighted review system in Malta and Iceland (excluding hotel and vacation rental chains). For properties in these countries, the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

United StatesAt first glance, the price for a bed in a shared hostel dorm in a small area might seem a bit high for some, but as mentioned above the hostel offers so much more than a bed and well beyond what I assumed. As noted on Booking, I think most of the dorms are mixed gender, but accommodations were sweetly at least attempted to avoid this depending on the number of reservations which I appreciated.
It's hard to imagine my time in Pinhão without Hostel Douro Backpackers. Pedro and Sara worked tirelessly to provide a warm welcome from literally the moment you walked in. Pedro's welcome drink and presentation provided all essential information including a map to local hikes, restaurant suggestions, and local must-dos. A lovely terrace garden full of orange and lemon trees provided a private oasis, especially in the afternoon sun. The location is conveniently located, but also a bit off from the main tourist center. Also, the hostel was perhaps the cleanest I have ever stayed, and it offered well beyond what I expected based on Booking.

United StatesThe hosts were exceptional in every way. I especially liked how Pedro gave me maps with places to hike, to eat, to experience wine tastings, etc. The hostel k was exceptional with a kitchen, tables for eating, a refrigerator for guests. On the upper level of the hostel is a wonderful terrace with tables, a beverage refrigerator, a clothes washing space and a garden. A great place to socialize with the hotel hosts and guests. I’ve stayed at a lot of hostels in Portugal and Spain. I rate this as my number one hostel stay.

NetherlandsTo be honest: nothing!
In Douro Backpackers you feel that the staff has had all the experiences of backpacking themselves and turned it into the very best practice you can imagine. We felt more than welcome from the very moment we opened the door until the heartfelt goodbye. It is the perfect location to meet up with other travellers, the roofterrace and the breakfastroom are ideal spots for this purpose. We never in our whole lifes (which are pretty long, with lots of travelling) have never come across a place like this. Go there and see for yourselves!

DenmarkI really enjoyed my stay at the Hostel. Pedro and Sara are great hosts. They make you feel as a part of their family. Pedro also provided several recommendations on restaurants and hiking in the Pinhao valley and helped with booking wine tastings. The rooms are very clean and well maintained. The hostel also has a beautiful terrace garden with nice views. I highly recommend this place and look forward to visit them again.

AustraliaWe were the only guests the night we stayed and were made to feel like royalty, welcome drink included. We received a very friendly and warm welcome from Pedro on entry, who gave us plenty of recommendations for the area and went above and beyond. Kitchen was very modern and well fitted out, and the bedrooms were clean and comfortable. Quiet location but close to the centre of town and right near the river.

NetherlandsModern, clean and very thoughtfully furnished: charging points/light by your bed and beds positioned in such way that even though it is a room of 6 people, it feels very private sleeping. Furthermore, Pedro and Sara are great hosts. Ask Pedro for his suggestions for some good hiking trails in the area!

United KingdomNothing, though like many buildings in the area future guests should be mindful that there are many stairs. Not a problem for us (and the stone walls along the stairs were beautiful!), but be careful after enjoying a few glasses of wine! ☺️
From the moment we arrived in Pinhão Pedro and Sarah made us feel so welcome! Pedro greeted us on our walk to the hostel without even knowing in advance who we were, it was amazing! 😄 Sarah was so welcoming introducing us to fellow guests and offering us a drink immediately upon our arrival and was so incredibly kind walking through all the wonderful sites and hikes the Douro has to offer! All of her recommendations were perfect and made for such an effortless and enjoyable visit. We ate (and drank 😉) well in Pinhão. The room was cozy and quiet. The bathrooms and showers were pristine. The kitchen was as perfectly equipped. The rooftop patio and terraced gardens were lovely and provided fantastic views of the beautiful vineyard landscape and mountains. Staying with Pedro and Sarah at Hostel Douro Backpackers was a highlight off our trip to Portugal and definitely one of the best lodging experiences we’ve had in all our travels!
