“Place is clean, well run, room was spacious”

  • Cabañas Calakmul Review score: 7

“Cabañas Calakmul offers very spartan accommodations, with a basic bed in a cabin and an even more rudimentary bathroom. The room includes a fan and a mosquito net, which are essential given the remote jungle location. Despite its simplicity, the location is perfect for visiting the Calakmul ruins, especially given the site's unusual opening hours. However, it feels like the host takes advantage of the limited accommodation options in the area to overcharge guests. Calakmul itself is brilliant and definitely worth the visit. With the new Mayan Train and the new hotel under construction, it's likely the area will lose some of its wild, untamed charm. The journey to Calakmul isn't ideal, as the road can be very bumpy and sometimes resembles a dirt track, but if you drive slowly, you’ll reach the site in about an hour and fifteen minutes. Be aware that the site is closed on Mondays due to ongoing works, and while most of the site is off-limits during construction, the pyramids remain accessible. To avoid any surprises, check the @inahcampeche Twitter account for the latest updates on entry hours and site closures. Despite the challenges, a visit to Calakmul is a unique and unforgettable experience.”

  • Casa Kaan Calakmul Review score: 10

“The hut was beautiful and very luxurious. At first arrival we thought the jungle was a bit meh, but in actuality we saw many birds right from our terrace. Including several Tucans (our hut was called Tucán). Dinner was very nice. Breakfast box to take to Calakmul was very convenient. Very relaxing place.”
