“Villa Violetta is a fantastic experience. It is fabulous in many ways (see below : ) but its absolute stand-out quality is its remoteness.
My wife and I travelled from the UK through France and Italy to Greece by train and ferry, staying in lovely places along the way. We stayed for five nights in Villa Violetta before turning for home. It was the highlight of the trip.
Villa Violetta is one of only a handful of villas for rent on the tiny island of Anti-Paxos, one kilometre south of the much bigger island of Paxos.
Getting there: There is no airport on Paxos so I imagine most people fly into Corfu and then get a ferry to Gaios, the main town on Paxox. (Gaios is a beautiful town and Paxos is a quiet Island... by any standard other than Antipaxos). We arrived by overnight ferry from Ancona in Italy to Igoumanitsa on mainland Greece, and then a 1.5-hour ferry to Gaios.
We were met off the ferry by Maria, with whom we had been in WhatsApp contact beforehand. She drove us to a supermarket so that we could buy all the food (and wine) we needed for our five days off-grid. Then she drove us back to the port where a private water-taxi was waiting to take us on the 15-minute trip to Antipaxos. At Antipaxos someone else was waiting to drive us up the unmetalled track to Villa Violetta (all transfers were included in the villa rental).
The villa: You've seen the photos. It really is that good. The location is spectacular. There is a tiny path from the villa to the cove below where we swam every evening (although at least one super-yacht dropped anchor 100m from the stony beach most nights). The main track takes you on a 10-minute, 20-minute or 30-minute walk to one of the three sandy beaches.
The pool seemed to be a mixture of salt water and chlorine, but we didn't see a single person from the villa while we were there. Inside the Villa is comfortable but basic. We were there in September. We kept the windows open and flyscreens closed 24*7 so didn't need a/c.”
“Amazing location in the heart of Gaios. The best feature of the apartment was the balcony which had the view of the main square and the port. The apartment was very clean and we did not experience any bad smells as were described in other reviews.”
“Lovely pool, quiet, friendly and the room was great. We had a family room and it was like a suite, tons of space. Perhaps the time of year but there wasn’t a lot of life in the hotel in the evening. There’s a brilliant restaurant over the road though, which is a great alternative if the kids don’t want to walk into Gaios.”
