How guest reviews work
Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We are currently testing a weighted review system in Malta and Iceland (excluding hotel and vacation rental chains). For properties in these countries, the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
- Politically sensitive comments
- Promotional content
- Illegal activities
- Personal or sensitive information (e.g. emails, phone numbers or credit card info)
- Swear words, sexual references, hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, or references to violence
- Spam and fake content
- Animal cruelty
- Impersonation (e.g. if the writer is claiming to be someone else)
- Any violation of our review guidelines.
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.

Liked most things really, maybe room for improvement with the English breakfast options

This place is the golden standard of how visitors should be treated. From the moment we arrived John was at the airport to great us. During our stay him and his wife Pam went out of their way to make us comfortable and welcome. We felt like we have known them for years. By the time we left we felt like we were a part of their family. Place is very close to the airport. Although breakfast was included but Pam will also prepare sandwiches for us when going on safari. We've learned a lot about South African history from them. I will recommend this place to anyone in a hart beat. We were not charged for extras like transportation and extra meals. The best part however meeting Pam and John. I would give rating of 11 but 10 is the highest

Everything was great actually, felt like a home away from home.
The whole experience was excellent. John picked me up from the airport at a very early hour, then bought me breakfast. We had great conversations and it really made my introduction to South Africa a fantastic one. The house is very nice with a huge garden, the breakfast was vast with fruits, yoghurt, eggs, toast, muffins, tea, and some meats of you so choose to partake.

Nothing! It was perfect.
125 on van Buuren Road is a grand guest house. I could mention the lovely rooms, the beautiful surrounding gardens and the delicious breakfast prepared daily but what made my stay so special was the warmth and kindness of the hosts, John and Pam.

There's nothing to dislike about the place

It would be great to have a kettle in your room
I can confidently recommend the guest house to anyone. The host, John, makes you feel at home as if you were at your own home. Very well located and the swimming pool is an extra bonus!

The hosts, John and Pam, were lovely. Our room was very comfortable and spacious. Great breakfast. John, very kindly, provided transport to & from the airport for a very reasonable fee. Also, as we were travel weary, they provided us with a light supper for a small fee so that we didn’t have to venture out to find something to eat. This was very much appreciated.

The power cuts were troublesome but the hosts did their best to help
A very cosy place in a serene and calm environment suited me perfectly. What moved me most was the personal touch in the hospitality. John Amis is a personality I will remember for long for his caring nature.

John first of all was absolutely amazing, friendly and made me feel welcome from the word go. With a wide breakfast spread to choose from right up until you're actual breakfast was tasty and well prepared.

Breakfast is great. The service is always good. There is cereal, juice, tea or coffee, you get offered a choice of eggs, bacon, sausage, tomato, everything a good South African breakfast offers.

Really, not even the slightest criticism. Simply a 5 star ++ stay. I’ll highly recommend to British or really any travellers via word of mouth. Nice option for business travellers also.
There are many choices in this general area but this was one of the best locations. John, the host, is very friendly and relaxed and runs a beautiful property. The rooms are a good size with decent size en-suite. Excellent cleanliness. The breakfast is superb and the breakfast setting delightful with a spacious raised patio enjoy the warm summer mornings. The security is very good with parking onsite. The wifi is convenient. Outstandingly good quality for money.

Admittedly, Johannesburg could be a tough place to visit. I wouldn't walk downtown, but I was totally comfortable walking in the patrolled area in which this property is located. It's a beautiful street. If someone wanted to amp up their safety feeling, Uber is available.
This property was central to what I wanted to do in Johannesburg, and host John was especially helpful in getting me around to accomplishing my goals in the day (two nights) I had allotted. Nicely appointed gardens with the cityscape in the distance, property is on a delightful treelined street which is even walkable (1-2K) to good dinner choices. Quiet environment, very restful, enjoyed easy conversation with other guests. Looked like about 5 guest rooms, so was not crowded. Good breakfast choices and guests could compare notes in comfortable surroundings. John made my airport transfers easy and accommodated my local transportation needs. After seeing other Johannesburg areas, I'd really recommend this property.
