How guest reviews work
Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We are currently testing a weighted review system in Malta and Iceland (excluding hotel and vacation rental chains). For properties in these countries, the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
- Politically sensitive comments
- Promotional content
- Illegal activities
- Personal or sensitive information (e.g. emails, phone numbers or credit card info)
- Swear words, sexual references, hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, or references to violence
- Spam and fake content
- Animal cruelty
- Impersonation (e.g. if the writer is claiming to be someone else)
- Any violation of our review guidelines.
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
Guidelines and standards for Reviews
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.

All good. Made use of Accomodation twice now.
No breakfast. Walking distance to restaurants for dinner. if you dont want to leave too early in the morning some restaurants are open. People friendly and accomodating.

I was not able to securely lock the door going into the room. Would have been nice to have a breakfast option, sandwiches would also be suffice.
Nice for a quick stopover when traveling between Jhb and Cape Town

Please sort out the upstairs bathroom. It was rather unpleasant as there is clearly a huge problem with a leak. We could not use the bathroom as we the carpet around the toilet was sopping wet and the damp smell was unpleasant. it should not be rented as a two bathroom unit until that is sorted.
Lovely service - friendly and helpful. The beds were super comfortable. Thank you for that!!

Great for a stop over between Kenton and Johannesburg. Staff were really lovely. Rooms very quaint and clean.

Please provide a means to do the dishes and service the room in the morning as promised.
Crane Cottage was very well located and walking distance from a great pub and restaurants. We made use of the braai facilities but was not supplied with a method to wash the dishes and the morning coffee cups were not cleaned after use.

checkout time very unreasonable 9h00. Have travelled widely nationally and internationally. First time experienced such an early checkout. Tried calling contact no listed - no answer . sent mail for extension- received response next morning when already packed and ready to leave at9 due to no response- was anyway told no compromise on time

Our neighbours were VERY noisy and because the rooms are close together, they disturbed us quite a bit and we had to ask them to quieten down. We realize this is not the fault of the property but seeing as the cottage caters for stop over stays on the N1, with travelers needing a peaceful nights rest, stricter rules for noisy and boisterous groups should be implemented.
The room was very comfortable and clean had everything we required on a quick stopover stay. For the price we paid, it was an excellent value for money room.

One coffee, 2 sugar and 1 cremora for each person. No fresh milk. After a long day travelling it would have been nice to have a great cup of coffee.

The bath was freezing and did not retain the heat of the water.
We arrived during a power outage. Ample light was provided. The owner also kindly gave us the scheduled times for the upcoming power outages. The accommodation was very spacious and the rooms were nice and warm (A/C outlet and electric blankets on the bed).

Door handle faulty and occasionally door not opening easily.
Spacious. I liked the olden day vibes and comfort. Electric blankets and aircon heaters kept us very warm.

Nothing negative to report. Everything was jsut perfect and what we needed for a 1 nighter.
I like the fact that there were electric blankets, as it was really very cold. The setup was quaint and perfect for an over night stop.

Street light lit up the room when we wanted a dark room when sleeping. Consider fitting blinds to block out the street light just outside the room.
