Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We are currently testing a weighted review system in Malta and Iceland (excluding hotel and vacation rental chains). For properties in these countries, the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

South AfricaGuests should know that the road to De Hoop is partially gravel, making the travel time lengthy. There is also no WIFI or a clear signal in the Village Cottages. It would be great if De Hoop Collection provided more thoughtful activities for kids of different ages.
Our family of five stayed in the Village Cottages. It was tastefully decorated, fairly clean and comfortable. The animals and birds at De Hoop are free to roam the grounds, and my kids found it amazing to see them up close. The restaurant offers a really good breakfast and made a decent cappuccino. The flora and fauna at De Hoop Nature Reserve, as well as the beach scapes are so unique and beautiful, a must see is the beach at Koppie Alleen and to visit Bites Cafe. The staff at De Hoop Collection, namely the guides and reception staff are incredibly professional and knowledgeable.

SpainAs a self catering cottage, an oven tray would have been benefical to cook our Christmas dinner. The staff soon fixed this by bringing us one from the Restaurant … thank you so much! Otherwise very well equipped for fully self catering over a gourmet Christmas period. We were 4 adults and loved it, And it was not one of the deluxe suites (that we could have had the choice of at considerably Higher expense)
The property was spacious, comfortably furnished for general living. Nicely situated and an easy walk to Restaurant, reception and pool. It was quiet and peaceful even though semi detached. Nice private area with BBQ outside. Very comfy beds and linen, shampoos etc. (even the bunk beds which I as an adult slept in) Would highly recommend it as a great place to stay in this exceptional nature reserve. All the staff we encountered were amazingly helpful and smiley. Thankyou!

South AfricaThe Cottage was overpriced for 2 people. And for what js available. We only could book in a 6 bed and one would think to fill the place the price could be more reasonable.
Love the beauty of De Hoop. The variety of walk, cycling and swimming. We appreciate the friendliness of the staff. Definitely a must for birders.

United KingdomWe joked about the entrance drive, but a 50km boneshaker drive should really be flagged up a little more clearly in the booking, so that you make sure you're in the right car' The reception was 'frosty' at best which you don't want after your drive in. Was hard to understand why it wasn't a warmer welcome. Similar in the restaurant 'fig tree'. A beautiful setting, great chef and manager - but a mixed bag of service - from very chatty to really quite rude service. The pool near the restaurant / seating area didn't look fit to swim in which kids were a bit disappointed by. Same with kiddy play area which was in need of attention. A lot of attention seemed geared toward pushing guided trips, with staff deferring on any question with a 'you will need to speak to a guide'. There was a little bit of an 'atmosphere' about the place which was hard to pinpoint but must have come from something going on with those running the place. Not sure if there's some sort of high staff turnover or issue with contracts but there was definitely something..
Arriving at de hoop is a labour of love! Hire a 4x4 rather than an urban car as you'll go off the N2 on to 50km of rough dirt and gravel track to get down there. But once there the views of the bay and the sand dunes are worth it! The dunes at Koopie Allen should be an Unesco site. They are like landing on tattooine or a foreign planet, the families jaws all simultaneously dropped as we saw them for the first time.. Barely anyone else there across a stretch of 15km of sand dune. UNBELIEVABLE. Regarding De Hoop Collections themselves. The rooms are pristine white cottages, well decorated and a throwback to a simpler time. The fact the village cottages didn't have TV inside set the tone perfectly for our stay. The walks and bike trails were easy to find and gave spectacular views The animals: Eland, Ostrich, Zebra, water voles, Boks, tortoise and a variety of birds made the experience really special each time you walked from room to restaurant. The pool out back of the restaurant was pretty rustic but we had fun for an hr or so with the kids there, joined by a couple of local frogs... The food was nice. Steak first night and Ostrich the second both really well cooked.

United KingdomThat dreadful artificial creamer for coffee and tea; why not a small long life milk carton in fridge? That the reception office (where we paid our fee to enter the reserve) had a piece of crudely torn cardboard acting as louvre, replacing the bottom broken glass louvre. (which was of course unwashable amongst other undesirable qualities). The fact that phoning your official "reservations" number , and being politely assured our evening meal (at 7 p.m.)was booked, turned out to be untrue. We hovered for over an hour before being found a table for two at about 8.30 That the notice , in the coastal car park (7 km from the cottages), misleadingly said the beachfront cafe was open. It wasn't, not for another three days
We liked sitting on the back steps looking at birds and animals at dawn. We liked not really seeing or hearing other guests. We liked the perfectly set dining table and wished we had brought raw ingredients to cook a meal or two, to match

The cottage exceeded my expectations. Very clean and spacious with most of the essentials you might need including a large fridge. The restaurant is excellent and the whole place had such a lovely and welcoming feel. The beach is stunning and the nature reserve itself is awesome with all the animals roaming freely.
