We had to request a different room due to recent water damage and moldy smell in the unit we booked Fireplace but you have to supply your own firewood

A male staff member came to open the gate for us after hooting and calling for a long time. He told us he has no booking for us and there are no rooms for us. He was very obviously drunk with a beercan in hand. Later Maria came and she said we are 4 people, we can have only the cottage ( which was very upsetting as we had already paid for the cottage AND another room.) Eventually, after about 20 minutes of panic and talking, the message came across that the other room simply was not cleaned yet. So things started out a bit rough at around 3:30 pm on 1 Jan. The satelite TV could not receive any signal whatsoever. The stinking heap of rubbish at the entrance to the main house got really bad, and was collected only on 4 Jan. Maybe this heap can be stored further out of sight ( and smell) over the holidays? The little entrance passage ( to the pool) is also used as general storage for bags of cement, garden implements, chicken feed, etc, and this really detracts from the beautiful building and view...I would suggest also that guest are not treated to this as they enter. The resident dog, Freya, seems to really need a vet for an infection in her left ear.

The views and the inside spaces are marvelous. The cottage and garden room both very well set up and made for a lovely stay. Owner is very responsive to messages although not on site, and dealt with the Eskom outtage in good time. The resident dog, Freya, is marvelous and has the sweetest temperament...and crawled into our hearts in no time.

The apartment wasn't checked before our arrival as the toilet was not working. The electricity went out on Friday evening due to the weather, but the facility does not have backup power. None of the guests could charge their mobile phones and obviously the WI-fi was off (which was included in the price). Candles were issued, but no candle holders. The oil lamp was not working either. They didn't inform us that the lights are solar powered either.

There are breathtaking views of the surrounding areas. it really is a beautiful part of South Africa.

At Haernertzburg we were given a tourist map of the area and were surprised that Differs Rest Lodge is not on the map. Also, from the main road there is no signage. We asked for directions at the Hardware Store nearby. We were concerned that the guests above us might disturb us, walking on the wooden floors above our unit. Although they arrived late at night, they settled down quickly and all was peaceful.

The views are stunning, so is the pool and the gardens. Staff were all exceptionally friendly and helpful.

    1. Communication was poor - Upon booking and payment, there was no comms to confirm payment receipt from the lodge. We were informed to bring wood if we want to braai, but we didn't as were not planning on braaing. The comms should have additionally stated the area is cold in winter and for us to bring wood for the fire place. The TV Google Chrome operations should be written and included in their info page in the rooms. We had to call Johannes to help, who at some point was not reachable. 2. The stairs were very steep, I don't think an unfit elderly will be able to climb. 3. Maria the host and worker was pleasant, however it was odd that she couldn't make minor decisions without consulting with Johannes, who at times was not available or reachable. Suggestion - provide wood for the fire place, secondly add electric underblankets to the bed when its winter. The stay would have been warm and pleasant. Understand the Dutch look and feel, liked the art pieces, however the place could do with some modern interior improvement and upgrades. Additionally, include suggestions on the info page in the rooms on what to do around the area, restaurants, map, etc

Stunning location with lovely views. Also Maria the lady working there was very friendly and helpful too.
