The Directions were a bit sketchy , and the owner gave us a pin , but didnt tell us it was for chain that locked the gate with a lock that needed a code. But eventually we sorted it out .

Not enough information - at the point of booking and on the notice at the gate.

The place was great but I nearly left before I got in, thinking that the whole thing was a hoax. At the entrance there is just an ancient faded sign on a locked gate, with phone numbers that go straight to voice mail except for one, that was for a woman who said she hadn't worked there for four years. I hadn't realised that it is really important to be accurate about the time you will arrive, because that is when the (very pleasant and helpful) camp manager (there are only two staff members) comes to the gate to let you in. I also didn't realise that the camp is under a cliff (gloriously inhabited by vultures) 10 kms along a steep rough road. I crawled along at less than 10 kms an hour, trying to steer around rocks that would have bashed my sump. But once I was there it was lovely.

The swimming pool not being operational, but I suppose the idea was to save water if there isn’t enough rainfall in the area.

I loved the idea of being ‘off the grid’, no signal and keeping the place as natural as possible. Throughly enjoyed the experience.

No signal or very little signal , not recommended for business travel if signal for phones and wifi cannot be used as you use the night times to catch up on emails and contact with clients .

The fact that there are no changing ports inside the chalets. Phone will definitely power at some point.

Lighting being solar was a bit limited. Showers need a bit of fiddling to get hot water. Road in up Bekkers pass a bit rough. Fine with my vehicle but 2 wheel drive low vehicles must go very slow to avoid damage .

Excellent location below the Marakele buttress. Very beautiful and rustic. Great birding and excellent guided walks with Alois. Got to see male black cuckoo shrike which was a lifer. Really easy drive from Johannesburg. Loved that there was no wifi and patchy mobile reception. People need to stay off their devices

The road up the mountain is very difficult if you don't have a 4x4 vehicle. There is also only one place to charge your phone in the communal kitchen and only uses a USB so phones like iPhones are difficult to charge.

The view was great. The camp and the chalets were very clean, neat and nice. The water was so clean and the air crisp. The staff are very friendly and helpful.

If you are visiting the Marakele, do note that this about 40 mn from the main gate, and the access road is rough and requires a high-clearance vehicle, although a 4x4 is not necessary. Once you reach the camp, you will not want to go back down to the Marakele on the same day, so booking in advance a drive or hike with Griffons might be the better option.

This is a great place to be away from everything. It sits on a gentle slope at the bottom of a stunning mountain. Aloïs took great care of us and the place was as peaceful as they get. You can sit down on a bench or on the lawn and listen to the sounds of the bush while watching the sun set.

Was not aware about the complete self catering. Was under the impression there was a restaurant. But can't really complain. Happy with my stay. Town wasn't too far in. And they were well stocked.

Loved the "off-the-grid" vibes. Completely out of the city. Beautiful scenery. Super content and definitely will go back.

For a bush camp it was what we expected.

This is a bush camp in a great location in a part of the park below the cliff where the Griffons nest. The accommodation is stone and thatch cabins which are well built and very functional. The bathroom is outside surrounded with reed screening, the toilet works well and the shower is heated by a wood fire which also works well. The main kitchen is communal and well equipped but is 60m away in the dark. Alios is the supervisor and he has vast knowledge of the flora and fauna and can take you for a guided hike. There is no 220v power, all lights are 12v LED's. Bring extra batteries for cell phones and cameras.
