Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We are currently testing a weighted review system in Malta and Iceland (excluding hotel and vacation rental chains). For properties in these countries, the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

Absolutely fantastic: gorgeous, gorgeous location; lovely and responsive host, comfortable and well-appointed accommodation. The kitchen was well equipped and the property is self-sufficient on solar power so no power cuts. It's the kind of place you actively look forward to returning to at the end of a long day. I was only sorry I couldn't stay longer!

South AfricaNothing. Absolutely nothing.
The house has all the amenities that you could ever need, with quite a few luxuries and the host has thought of everything! There are very thoughtful touches and it is all beautifully decorated. Despite having nearby units you feel as though you are in your own little section of paradise! The host is an excellent communicator and was there at a drop of the hat with any difficulties. We needed assistance with an extra day when our next accommodation fell through and she sorted it all out in amazing time! Making an effort to even wish me on my birthday is just one of the many things that makes this place a gem. We will definitely book again anytime we are in the area. I cannot sing their praises enough. 100/10 🙌🏼

United KingdomThe only issue was having water supply linked to electricity (which we were not used to) which we found a bit challenging not to be able to shower or use the toilet during loadshed particularly when there was an unplanned outage in the area for 8+ hours so our only suggestion would be to at least have a battery or something for the water pump.
The cottage was so clean, almost felt like no one had stayed there before us. Was just spotless, very well provisioned, and beautifully decorated. We had no issues doing a bbq and cooking when we needed to. Enough room for our family of 5 and the area was very tranquil and peaceful with a lovely pond just in front of the cottages. Robyn and Charles communicated well and were great hosts trying to resolve any issues as quickly as possible, which we most appreciated. Other than the one issue noted, we loved it!

NetherlandsThere was often loadshedding, like all over the country. As the water pump runs on electricity there was also no water during power outages. cooking is on gas, so that’s an advantage.
it’s a remote and very peaceful place. it was very clean, nice interior, fabulous shower and open views to the lawns. There was a fire place inside with free firewood. That made the house very comfortable during the cold evenings. The host was friendly and really helpful.

South AfricaFor load shedding which in July 2022 can occur two to three times a day there was only one candle to be used (two candles provided but with only one candle holder). The small solar jar is not working and a small battery light were also of no use. The owner should at least have two re-chargeable lamps for guests for load shedding in hours of darkness. It was difficult to prepare some meals with the inadequate lighting. We had to leave early at 7 am and had to do the packing in near pitch darkness. We found the internet to be very slow and used our data instead from our mobile phones. It is not uncapped wifi which is okay, but the speed was extremely slow for basic functions and Apps. Please take note that although the info on the booking page say there is a flat screen TV which there is , there is no DSTV, which was not an issue for us, except we missed the rugby match. You need to bring your own DSTV card or another device to connect the TV with your own DSTV log in details , etc if you prefer DSTV. There is Netflix, You Tube, etc on the TV. We also missed an outside garbage bin and if you stay for four days like we did you want to get rid of the garbage in the bin in the kitchen on a daily basis. If the owner attend to these few technical issues it will make the stay even more pleasant.
Starling Cottage is a delight, it is top notch self catering in many aspects. The cottage is well appointed, spacious and the verandah is a bonus. Beautiful bathrooms as well. Utilities are good quality and the bed and linen were really comfortable and loads of cupboard space. It is located in a quiet setting and peaceful. The closed fire place is perfect for the winter and ample wood is provided at no cost. In close proximity of many Garden Route attractions. A very good stay.
