Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We are currently testing a weighted review system in Malta and Iceland (excluding hotel and vacation rental chains). For properties in these countries, the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

United StatesThis negative is not really a negative - it's part of the experience - but if you have a smaller car, you may want to pass on this. It's a hard drive on a really bad road for quite some time off the main highway. We have a 4X4 and it was still a challenge. The bonus to this is that it is an extremely private property and very quiet. A real authentic Drakensberg experience.
This place is one of the few we've stayed at during COVID that didn't have lower service standards than normal. The hosts were incredibly attentive, and the meals were outstanding. They had the best honesty bar as well! The rooms were comfortable and clean, though rustic, as fits the environment there. The hot water bottles for the bed were also great. The attention to detail was excellent, and the whole experience was fantastic. We lost power due to load shedding one evening, and the hosts were communicative, gave us all the back up lights we needed ahead of time, and turned the powerless evening into a romantic candle-lit dinner and fireplace experience. Gorgeous and quiet setting. If you want mountain solitude and personal attention and amazing food, this is the place to be.

United KingdomThe access road to the lodge is very rough and long - it is passable with a sedan but with a few near-scrapes and semi-regular bottoming-out. A 4x4 should be very strongly encouraged. Regardless of car type, we found the journey in/out of the property detracted from our experience. The lodge has no back-up generator and load shedding is frequent.
The views from the property are stunning, and once you're out on the main road it's a short drive to the Monk's Cowl national park entrance for hiking. Ryan and Danny made a good effort to meet our vegan/vegetarian dietary requirements.

IsraelUnfortunately we had a bad experience here. We had little red worms that kept appearing in our bed. We cleaned thoroughly, as we really loved the property and understood this was a part of nature, and tucked in for the night.. We then heard 2 dull thuds on our blanket. We turned on the lights to discover the worms were falling from the thatch roof. As much as we love nature, we couldn't sleep in a bed with worms falling on us.. Also note that we discovered the hard way that a low vehicle (vw golf) was unable to enter the property without scraping along the ground. The note we received mentioned that any vehicle is fine, and an SUV is only recommended for the rainy season The worst part is we were not granted a refund that even covers one night, of our 3 days booking. Very disappointing response from the owners.

South AfricaThe road up to the lodge is bad, so it takes time to get up and down. Preferably for 4x4 vehicles.
The location is magnificent, with stunning views of the mountains. The breakfasts prepared by Lyn and her staff are exceptional. Hot water bottles for our beds made the stay really cozy. Lovely comfortable shared lounge and dining area with fireplace. Pat and Lyn are wonderful hosts who made us feel welcome and took care of every need.

South AfricaThere was an unbearably strong smell in our room - smelled like room had been fumigated/painted and then strong citronella was burnt. After check-in we immediately left to buy dinner and spent evening in guest lounge. We only briefly visited our room during evening, then we noted the smell, which we initially thought was strong room fragrance/citronella. Around 7pm we removed room fragrances, opened all windows and put high-velocity fan on full blast. We returned to our room around midnight but smell was unbearable after 30mins in the room. I thought I was going to have an asthma attack, even though my asthma is well controlled & not overly sensitive to smells. My husband (not asthmatic) also found the smell intolerable. We thought it rude to wake owners after midnight given that there were no other rooms available & smell persisted, so we slept (very uncomfortably) on the guest lounge sofa. Next morning we politely expressed our dissatisfaction & details of events to owners. They acknowledged the smell & suggested it may be eucalyptus oil used to clean the room. They agreed to refund us for remaining nights once they received the money from booking platform and asked for my bank details. They later withheld the refund without even the decency to notify us – they emailed their reasons to Booking.com, denying the severity of smell and said we didn’t give them a chance to fix the problem - no other rooms were available and the fact that the smell had not aired out after 5+ hours with fan on and windows open was a clear indication that the problem COULD NOT be fixed. IT’S CLEAR THEY HAVE NO RESPECT FOR GUESTS FOR VARIOUS REASONS: LYNN BLOCKED MY NUMBER (MY WHATSAPP MESSAGES & CALLS FAILED), THEY DIDN’T RESPOND TO MESSAGES VIA BOOKING.COM, STATED IN EMAIL TO BOOKING.COM THAT WE MADE UP THE SMELL AS EXCUSE TO LEAVE EARLY (THIS IS NOT TRUE!) AND COMPLAINED ABOUT SHUTTLING FOREIGNERS WHO WERE SCARED TO DRIVE RIVER CROSSING.
Beautiful location & premises, but sadly we could not enjoy our stay due to the horrible smell in our room, which they refused to refund us for.
