Too much clutter upstairs on the balcony.

Friendly staff. Clean rooms. My boys had a blast down at the river. The guests were friendly too.

Our plugs were faulty and our cottage was freezing! Could use a little heater :) Maybe even a toaster, so you don’t have to walk up every time you want a snack! X

Friendly staff. Beautiful views. I loved the rustic feel! I especially loved the outdoor bath and the cozy cottage.

The room wasn't ready when we arrived. There was a leak in our room. Didn't feel 100% clean and was a bit unorganized.

The hot tub and the location. Comfy bed

Communal areas were poorly maintained. Room had no privacy and other guests disturbed our peace due to its vicinity to the kitchen/braai.

    Pristine surroundings. Extraordinary views.

Communal area; kitchen, shower and bins were not hygienicly clean. Kitchen dish wiping rags were old and dirty. Blankets on the beds had animal hair and smelt after dogs.

Location was amazing, room was good. Owner and staff were friendly.

Did not realise bathroom facilities mainly shared. Backpackers setup. No Covid precautions. Communal kitchen very basic. Buildings need maintenance (e.g. wooden stairs) and yard a clean-up.

Beautiful views and swimming in the rock pools an experience. Communal lounge area great. Rooms were clean and neat. Appreciated it that we were moved from a hot wooden cabin to another room.

Our suggestions are to place a rubbish bin in the room, there was a kettle in the room, but nothing else, no cups, spoons or a tea tray, Sophia room was boiling hot as it has no ceiling for insulation and a clear panel skylight that allows the heat to penatrate, so no day napping is possible in the room. There was only 2 small windows that did not allow enough ventilation. The bath outside was lovely, but not private and it unfortunately leaked while bathing. The area outside our room was very scruffy with old building materials, thrown in a large pile, rusty nails included. Some attention to detail outside the rooms is as important especially that one would like to be outside in nature, however we found it very uncomfortable to find any secluded space just to relax, besides the deck where all other guests were mingling. The shared kitchen facilities were bare minimum & only 1 cloth was available for cleaning tables, floors spills and drying dishes. We hope our suggestions can assist with the growth of comfort level @McBains

The river was spectacular and close to reach, the atmosphere was fun and the other visitors really made our stay! Our bed surprisingly comfortable and that was really pleasing. We unfortuately were expecting alot more for the price we paid, we did not feel that the rooms were cabins or lodge style living at all, it felt like a bed in a shed, we did not realize McBains was a backpackers, as that was not mentioned on their website and if it was, we would have booked elsewhere, as for R1200 our options are many at a 3 or 4 star establishment. We suggest more detailed photos of the rooms and the communal areas, for your website and booking platforms, so one does not arrive with expectations due to the price paid.

Rustic is one thing, but run-down and dilapidated....not so much. Chipped crockery, broken Weber, lawn not mowed, scatters in tatters. No amount of humour or attempt at satire, can cover that (as per artwork created on walls, and memorobilia attached everywhere)

    The view.
