How guest reviews work
Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We are currently testing a weighted review system in Malta and Iceland (excluding hotel and vacation rental chains). For properties in these countries, the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
- Politically sensitive comments
- Promotional content
- Illegal activities
- Personal or sensitive information (e.g. emails, phone numbers or credit card info)
- Swear words, sexual references, hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, or references to violence
- Spam and fake content
- Animal cruelty
- Impersonation (e.g. if the writer is claiming to be someone else)
- Any violation of our review guidelines.
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
Guidelines and standards for Reviews
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.

Just a small issue with not enough hot water in the shower.
Such an amazing apartment. Really comfortable and centrally located. Philippa went out of her way to make sure we were taken care of.

spacious and clean. friendly hosts. attention to detail: milk in the fridge, filter coffee, shower gel provided, etc. the hosts provided extra blankets and heaters for the cold weather. easy access for Uber drivers.

The bathroom door does not close properly. The lounge/dining could do with a bit of extra light by way of lamps.
Philippa, the host, was extremely helpful, responsive and understanding, making the stay a very warm and comforting one. The facilities are lovely and homely.

It was cold and housekeeping was lacking; I had to request a washcloth. The towels upon my arrival were soiled. The location is a nice area but not accessible to amenities without an Uber.
The hospitality of my hosts was second to none!

The energy saving gas heater had no gas so it was too cold to sit in the lounge & enjoy TV..But we thank God for the electric heaters in both bedrooms that kept us very cosy & warm.We found it a bit odd for us not to have a separate lockable entrance solely that leads into our unit but we were never disturbed/intruded by either Phillippa & hubby..So there was not much to dislike.
From the outdoor entrace, the real deal is all hidden until you enter & see the spaciousness & comfort., All the breakfast items (TeaBags/Coffee/Juice/Milk/Sugar/Fruits/Rusks/Yougurt/Jungle Oats) was very healthy & very convenient to prepare.It even served as a night snack.lol..The many flavoured Jungle Oatso Easy became my personal favourote.Safe Indoor Parking.Philippa was excellent.Its was indeed home away from home.Great venue for family. Will definitely book again when we are in Jhb again.Real great value for money

The household lady was very caring. She gave many advices for restaurants, coffee places and transportation. The house is located at very secured area and very accessible with Uber cars.

I highly recommend Sandown Estate Apartment. I loved the spacious accommodation. Attention to detail was exceptional. The hosts, Philippa and Andre were extremely friendly and helpful. The self-help breakfast was fantastic. We felt instantly at home. I will definitely be back. Do not hesitate to book Sandown Estate Apartment for your stay in Johannesburg, because this is superior value for money accommodation!!

everything was great
Easy communication, very good and safe location. Apartment was clean and very comfortable for a good night of sleep. Philippa, her dogs, her husband and her helper were lovely. Breakfast in the morning was perfect to kick off the day in a good note. they thought about everything. 100% recommended!

The apartment is spacious, very clean and had all the comforts of home and is located in a secure, quiet estate, we felt very safe. Getting to and from SANDTON city center was quick and easy with Uber. Hosts were friendly and immediately saw to one of our requests. Was lovely to have fresh fruit, yogurt, muffins, milk, cereals, coffee, tea etc in the apartment when we arrived. It was hot in JHB so the addition of fans in each room was appreciated.

Friendly hosts arranged early check in, there was a folder of useful info. Apartment was very clean , quiet and very spacious. Fully equipped kitchen and hosts can arrange laundry. Great location , 40r Uber to N Mandela Sq.
