Incredible decoration, lovely and warm host, and the doggy ambassador Bella was the cutest! Good sunset spot nearby. Will need an Uber or car to get around, like in most of Joburg.

Absolutely fantastic place to stay. 1920 building with beautiful trees and the most kind and funny host Gina who will take care of your every wish. I totally felt at home connecting with other guests like family. If you need a driver ask Gina about Wellington most kind driver with super reasonable prices. I just love all about this hotel.

Everything. Location is great, right next to a beautiful viewpoint. We felt very safe too in the home and neighbourhood. Check in process was clear and great despite our flight delay, and Gina whatsapped us ahead of time to confirm our arrival time. The rooms themselves are beautifully appointed - very clean and with modern amenities, yet so homely and warm. The bathrooms, while not ensuite (Princess and Man Cave rooms), were just across the corridor. They are massive and each have a bathtub with bath salts as well as hot shower with strong pressure and good drainage. Breakfast was amazing. Having come from several hotel stays in Kenya and Rwanda, the muesli, yoghurt, fruits, scrambled eggs, bread, freshly squeezed juice and all were divine. The dining room is beautifully furnished and Gina herself is so hands on with the entire process. Note breakfast is R150pp, which we felt was very reasonable. We got to keep our luggage past check out time, which is always helpful, and Gina made sure to be present to see us off for our cab to the airport. All in all, we definitely got so much more than the price we paid for the stay. We received great hospitality from Gina and would strongly recommend the Great Gatsby Houghton to anyone of our friends coming to Joburg.

Staff billiant. Room was emeculate clean. And bed so Devine for sleeping. Huge tv with instant netflix. Awesome. Grounds and the Manor are Spectacularly kept. Loved the little balcony for sitting outside. Breakfast FRESH and spot-on. Gina a Fantabulous Hostess. Thanks for everything.

Nothing at all, it is magnificent!

This gem of a guesthouse exudes luxury and opulence reminiscent of the roaring twenties. From its elegant art deco furnishings to its exquisite location, every detail transports you back to a golden era. Gina’s attention to detail, impeccable service, and thematic coherence create an immersive experience. It’s a delightful escape into a bygone era of sophistication and extravagance. Easily my first choice in Johannesburg, I’ll most definitely be back soon.

I wish I had stayed longer

It was exceptional! It is definitely one of the best places I ever stayed. The decoration is unique and extremely nice. The host did everything in her reach to make us comfortable. On top of that she has a super cute dog, Bella! I strongly recommend the place for those who are tired of staying in hotels that look all the same!

Gina is an absolutely wonderful hostess and The Great Gatsby is a fantastic place to stay in Joberg. Gina greeted us at the property, showed us around, and was always on hand to offer any help we required. She was very hospitable and made us feel right at home. We stayed in the coach house, and Gina kindly managed to get the place to ourselves, which we really appreciated. The Gatsby buildings have so much character both inside and out, and it was an absolute pleasure to stay there. I hope we will return to Joberg in the future and we'll be sure to stay at The Great Gatsby again! Thanks Gina!!

It's a bit too intrusive for me to have people always wanting to converse every time you leave the room. Also I had to give an EXACT time of my arrival. Being new to the city, this wasn't something I could predict. This was my 1st time staying at a bed and breakfast, so this could be completely normal. The room was up a LOT of stairs outside.

Great Gatsby is a hidden gem run by the wonderful Gina Gabriel who is not just a fabulous host, but cooked up an imaginative and delicious breakfast. It beats hands down any cookie-cutter dull corporate hotel for comfort, service, location, value for money and sheer surprise.

Only thing is that is located on a tricky part of a busy road. Missed the entrance initially so I needed to do a u-turn. Once you know where it is, it’s not a problem.

The most incredible accommodation you can find. A very impressive mansion located up the hills in an authentic setting. The rooms are very luxurious and very clean. The staff is very friendly and going to great lengths to make your stay as comfortable and pleasant as possible. They even upgraded us so we could check in earlier. We highly recommend them if your looking for a great stay in Johannesburg.
