Mérida was founded as Augusta Emerita in 25 BC, the capital of the ancient Roman province of Lusitania. Located almost half-way between Madrid and Lisbon, it is nowadays an important historic centre, and the capital of the Spanish region of Extremadura. The ‘Archaeological Ensemble of Mérida’ has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage site.
The city was founded in order to protect the Guadiana River pass, becoming the largest city on the Iberian Peninsula. Visigoths, Moors, the Christian ‘reconquista’, and the Napoleonic invasion left their mark too, and the city is nowadays home to the most complete Roman remains in Spain.
Its historic centre displays a mix of all these cultures, with the Roman Theatre and the Roman Bridge standing out. The Alcazaba is the old fortress of Roman origin, successively rebuilt by Visigoths and Moors. Renaissance, Gothic and Baroque buildings, as well as typical cobbled streets complete the picture. Some of the most charming hotels and B&Bs in Mérida are located in the Old Town.
The easiest way to get to the city is flying in to Seville or Madrid, and then by train to the local railway station. Whether you’re searching the best hotels or budget accommodation, don’t miss the Mérida deals available on Booking.com!
A pretty, nice town. I liked the Roman bridge, the river, the sidewalk along the river, the Roman Theatre, amphitheatre, the Iberian bellota ham and pork. I had some good Iberian pork dishes, such as pluma, carrillada... So tasty! People are very friendly!

Merida has so many great archeological and cultural sites to explore. Thanfully they are all packed within walkable distances.
A day would not be enough unless you have the stamina. But it can be done.

Loved the Roman Theatre and the Amphitheatre.
Loved the Roman Theatre and the Amphitheatre. We also went on a trolley ride through the town which was fun and gave us a good view of the Roman Bridge and Aqueduct. Our hotel was not far from the Temple of Diana which was passed on the way to a really lively town square. Generally the atmosphere in Mérida was lively and fun. Loved it.

I'm a big fan of Roman history, and Mérida was the obvious place to stop over on my trip down to Andalucia from the UK. Temple of Diana and the aqueduct are both stunning, but sadly the amphitheatre wasn't open to visitors when I was there. A good excuse to return!

I loved the area near the Roman sites.
I loved the area near the Roman sites. The restaurants and shops were wonderful, and the area we stayed in near them seemed very safe. We spent about 3.5 hours at the Roman sites and history museum, but we could have used another 3 hours to explore the site in order to read the informational plaques at a leisurely pace and to people watch. We ate at La Casona, and the food was amazing, especially for the very reasonable prices. The portions are BIG, by the way. Don't miss out on trying the grilled goat cheese salad.

Merida is definitely a place to visit!!!
Merida is definitely a place to visit!!! The people are the best in Spain!!!
The food is fantastic!!!
And Roman ruins are amazing and the museum which is a majestic!!!!
Even if you are not into ruins this ruins are a must see!! During the summer months, they have concerts and theater in the ruins. It must be magical!
The room was spacious, clean and functional, but a bit dark towards an inner courtyard which on the other hand made it quiet during the night. The strict rules of the restaurant and bar (that did not have the cocktails they offer in their menu) rather reminded us more of a youth hostel then a hotel of this category, unfortunately due to a family emergency we could not check wether it was thus in all paradores or just the one in Merida. The parador is right in the city with all sights in easy walking distance
The apartment is right in the center of Merida, in walking distance to the primary attractions. If you travel there by car, you also have a parking in the same street or another one two streets aside.
The apartment is more than enough to stay a few nights, it has a kitchen, a good bathroom and it's in a calm area. The building also seems renovated recently which gives a good impression.
The recepcionist was very helpful and nice.
Clean, roomy apartment, ideal overnight stop. Communications with hotel management were promptly answered. We particularly appreciated that the receptionist, on arrival, helped us with parking, access to the building and to our apartment. Will be booking another visit.
Wonderfull little hotel. Loved everything about it. We stayed in the Katheryn Bigelow room. It had a nice double bed with an additional pull-down single. The beds and the pillows were very comfortable. The aircon worked perfectly. Wouldn't change a thing.
Located in the center of Merida, this hotel provides nice rooms with private jacuzi. The breakfast served in the room was delicous and copious. We had a room with a nice balcony and there is a parking lot not far from the hotel (10 min. by walk).
Lovely people, even lent me an umbrella when I woke up to pouring rain.
A hotel heater that works as intended! a rare and welcome treat with unseasonably cold Spring weather!
Excellent location, easy to walk to museums and archeology.
Place is just top. Every detail thought, including a total domotic control. Clean, tidy and well organised. Owner is an excellent person that provided good guidance on what to visit on Merida. Accept his recommendations
The apartment was very comfortable and clean and the host was very gracious and helpful. The location is excellent, within walking distance of everything in Merida. It was a wonderful place to stay.
brand new boutique style hotel, great price, soundproof, superclean, super friendly receptionist, very central, 4mins from roman amphitheatre, in city centre, close to restaurants and souvenir shops
The location is great for travel to and from the costa del sol. We are regular travellers in Spain and this Breakfast is the best this year. Great room and very comfortable bed.
So cute! Wish we had spent more than just a night in passing in Mérida. So close to downtown we were able to quickly visit a little bit in the short time we had. Loved it!
It went well with the cities themes. The beds were very soft. The breakfast buffet was the best in all of our hotels on this trip. The valet parking was very helpful.
The hotel was very clean. The beds were a bit hard and we could have used more pillows. The pool was was clean and the water perfect!Good breakfast and helpful staff.
Nice hotel, friendly staff. Free parking. Didn't use the restaurant, so I can't comment. I walked into Merida, which was a good walk, so I would recommend a taxi
