About Glasgow

Including tips for the best time to visit Glasgow

A former European Capital of Culture, Glasgow combines beautiful architecture and a thriving arts scene. Visitors can rest assured that they’ll never run out of things to do, whether it’s exploring the Georgian buildings of George Square or embarking on a shopping spree along the ‘Style Mile’.

Scotland’s largest city is also home to some top-rated museums. Be inspired at the avant-garde Glasgow Science Centre on the banks of the River Clyde, or the iconic Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum, where you’ll find everything from dinosaur fossils to masterpieces by Dutch masters. Meanwhile, the award-winning Riverside Museum showcases the city’s transport and shipbuilding heritage with its huge collection.

Stylish cafés and cosy restaurants line Glasgow’s revamped riverfront, while its architectural legacy is preserved by the Victorian designs of Charles Rennie Mackintosh. You can find these dotted around the city, from the central Lighthouse to the Hunterian Art Gallery, which recreates the famous architect’s home in remarkable detail.

These days, the city’s primary creative outlet is music. Be sure to catch a gig at one of countless venues, from the world’s oldest surviving music hall to the venue that launched the career of Oasis.

Glasgow also makes a great base for exploring the surrounding landscapes. Loch Lomond, on the lowlands border, is around half an hour’s drive away, while the vast and verdant Highlands are right on the doorstep.

Glasgow has some local attractions but they could be promoted better. Nice botanical gardens. the west of Glasgow is a nice part to visit. Motorway systems are confusing. Satnav essential and be on your toes.

It is a lovely city with lots of character and choices for food and drink. There is also a good array of visitor attractions and a rich history to the place. I was pleasantly surprised by the art scene not only current, but I discovered in its museum collections some Scottish artists from 1920s, 30s etc. that I was not aware of. Also cultural movements and societal - lost to offer. Would have loved to stay longer and actually explore its surroundings (walks or treks). For those who like to explore on foot: large streets, clean, safe - you can walk easily around the city despite the hilly setting. For those who like to use public transport - at this time (april 2024) the city is under a lot of upkeep and street repairs so it's not so reliable transport wise or as quick.

I went to university in Glasgow many years ago, it has changed a lot but is still very vibrant and buzzy! Lots of bars, coffee spots and restaurants to choose from. The West End is nicer than the City Centre and not too far out of the city to travel. Recommend Rab Ha's for traditional Scottish food, Singl-End is a great brunch spot but booking is required.

Glasgow haSs a wealth of fine architecturemany Art Galleries and over 30 public parks.Only London has better shopping opportunities. There are a multitude of shopping areas within a few minutes walk of the Abode Hotel. There are rail stations thatconnect with the rest of UK as well as rest of Scotland. Glasgow Airport is only a short distance from the city. There is a very frequent airport coach service from Buchanan Street Bus Station. You could get a train to Paisley and trhen a local bus to the airport, but Airport express coach is easier and faster.
