This traditional Japanese-style townhouse was created in collaboration with local artists and boasts designs with both modern and traditional Japanese influence. Guests will have the entire property to themselves during their stay. Such a memorable stay in the middle of an iconic area. It is set 3.4 km from Hida Minzoku Mura Folk Village and provides free shuttle service. The property is non-smoking and is situated 1.2 km from Takayama Station. The building itself, as you can see from the pictures, is exquisite. If you are a fan of architecture or traditional craftsmanship, you will delight at just BEING in Taniya. This was almost a problem—I'm used to thinking of a hotel as a "crash pad" while exploring, and instead I wanted to spend hours and hours inside! Each morning was calm and peaceful: make a cup of green tea, then observe the way the light plays through the washi, the sound of water rushing by. I also particularly loved the bath; one of my favorite memories was enjoying it on a rainy, chilly night. We got home from dinner, I used the auto-fill function while I got ready for bed, then opened the window onto the courtyard and stepped in. Watching the moon through the rain, maple leaves, and steam curling up from the bath... it's like having your own personal onsen. Plus, each item in the villa was thoughtfully chosen, from the local sakes on offer in the fridge to the items provided in the bathroom to the super-soft pajamas. Even better were our hosts, who exemplified the Japanese concept of "omotenashi" (essentially, "hospitality" taken to its highest level). Well before arrival we were working with the Taniya concierge to make our plans happen (many thanks to Mahiro!). She handled making reservations at our desired restaurants and travel around town was provided as needed. Where she truly excelled was helping us troubleshoot our more ambitious ideas, such as: is there an open-air onsen near the Shinhotaka Ropeway with private baths? And how do we get there and back? The Kusakabe family were also gracious and friendly hosts, helping us along with the concierge and sharing their knowledge of Japan and Takayama plus their personal history—talking with them and touring the Folk Crafts Museum was a particular highlight, as many of the items on display are Kusakabe family heirlooms.

It's a cute homey place. The owner was friendly and accommodating. The room was warm and the bed was very comfortable and had lots of storage space. The view from the room was spectacular. The shared kitchen had all the essentials and I really enjoyed my stay. The guesthouse provides a shuttle service for no additional cost in the morning hours. The Hida Folk village is at a walking distance. The bus stop and convenience stores are 4 mins away.
Everything in the mountain town of Takayama was within easy walking distance of Kanamori House. The house was easy to find and very clean and comfortable. It is a great base from which to explore the surrounding Japanese Alps. We rented a car at the train station (International driver's license required) and used it to explore the thatched-roof farmhouses in Shirakawa-go village and nearby waterfalls and a scenic cable car ("ropeway") up into the mountains.
This historic family run ryokan is absolute luxury and very special indeed. A highlight of our trip to Japan in many ways!
1. The hotel is located in-front of the bus station. 2. The host will shows you a free ride in the village and go up to the observatory. 3. The food here is superb from the forest, very recommended.
Amazing hospitality by the owners! Food was great - had a taste of the seasonal ingredients . They even provided a mini tour for us to visit the omimachi village and the Shirakawa viewing point.
Whole place was big and felt luxurious
The guesthouse is right in the middle of the village, so it's a pretty sight. The meals were copious. If you ask for a vegetarian option in advance, they can prepare it for you (but it will be the same for each dinner). The staff was always present, smiling and helpful. They even let us eat later than scheduled because of a train problem. The traditional Japanese room is big and comfortable.
The villa is very picturesque and the rooms are stunning.
Kazeya was such a beautiful place, traditional japanese mansion with a super cozy private onsen. The staff were super kind, even though we misscalculated our times and end up arriving super late, they had delicious cozy dinner ready for us. Our host that night speaks spanish and made us feel super comfortable and welcomed. If we ever come back to Japan we are visiting Kazeya again. We loved it.
The sauna room was incredible. It wasn’t cheap but it was amazingly luxurious!! A nice change from the small rooms japan is renowned for. Old definitely stay again, It was immaculate!
