Takayama City, Takayama
Renovated in 2015, IORI Stay is nestled in Takayama. This traditional Japanese-style townhouse was created in collaboration with local artists and boasts designs with both modern and traditional Japanese influence. Guests will have the entire property to themselves during their stay. The stay at IORI was definitely the most unique throughout our travel. The house is a traditional Japanese house made from wood, has a hot tub, a small garden and all the amenities of a modern home. The upstair bedrooms are very pretty and the beds are very comfortable. It is also conveniently located 5 min walk from the center of a beautiful old town with wonderful markets.

The checkin with tablet was easy and went very well. The support from the owner was very good : we call late 1st night to understand how to get hot water and received immediately the answer. I definitely recommend and we will come back with pleasure.

The house is just gorgeous. Very comfortable, super clean, super tasteful design. On top of, Takashi, who owns/operates a record shop/café next door was the most caring and attentive host you could wish for. He made us feel at home from our arrival.
It’s a cute little village. Bakery, ramen shop, grocery. What else do you need.
Moving uphill from the place we found beautiful country side views and met really nice people.
What a hidden gem. 🙏

The air-conditioned accommodation is 3.5 km from Hida Minzoku Mura Folk Village. The property is less than 1 km from the city centre and a 17-minute walk from Takayama Station. Soramachi was a very comfortable house with good facilities. Probably the most spacious and nicest accomodation we experienced in our travels through Japan. Only stayed 2 nights but it provided a relaxing and quiet break from the crowds elsewhere. The house is right on the river and close to a tranquil temple walk and public bathhouse . It is an easy walk from there to the old quarter and we walked to the house with luggage from the station ( 1.4 km). The owners are obviously very house proud and welcoming. Highly recommend this accomodation.

Located in the centre of Takayama, TANIYA features an open-air bath, a garden, free WiFi, and free private parking for guests who drive. It is set 3.4 km from Hida Minzoku Mura Folk Village and provides free shuttle service. The property is non-smoking and is situated 1.2 km from Takayama Station. The building itself, as you can see from the pictures, is exquisite. If you are a fan of architecture or traditional craftsmanship, you will delight at just BEING in Taniya. This was almost a problem—I'm used to thinking of a hotel as a "crash pad" while exploring, and instead I wanted to spend hours and hours inside! Each morning was calm and peaceful: make a cup of green tea, then observe the way the light plays through the washi, the sound of water rushing by. I also particularly loved the bath; one of my favorite memories was enjoying it on a rainy, chilly night. We got home from dinner, I used the auto-fill function while I got ready for bed, then opened the window onto the courtyard and stepped in. Watching the moon through the rain, maple leaves, and steam curling up from the bath... it's like having your own personal onsen. Plus, each item in the villa was thoughtfully chosen, from the local sakes on offer in the fridge to the items provided in the bathroom to the super-soft pajamas. Even better were our hosts, who exemplified the Japanese concept of "omotenashi" (essentially, "hospitality" taken to its highest level). Well before arrival we were working with the Taniya concierge to make our plans happen (many thanks to Mahiro!). She handled making reservations at our desired restaurants and travel around town was provided as needed. Where she truly excelled was helping us troubleshoot our more ambitious ideas, such as: is there an open-air onsen near the Shinhotaka Ropeway with private baths? And how do we get there and back? The Kusakabe family were also gracious and friendly hosts, helping us along with the concierge and sharing their knowledge of Japan and Takayama plus their personal history—talking with them and touring the Folk Crafts Museum was a particular highlight, as many of the items on display are Kusakabe family heirlooms.

Beautiful traditional hotel in Shirakawa. Structure is quite new and mix tradition and modern. Rooms are spacious and with all comforts. 24h onsen available, including drinks and snacks. Traditional dinner and breakfast available, which is a must to try. Staff is good and always try to help on anything. Shuttle bus from Shirakawa bus stop / traditional village.
Compared to other places in this village, it was a cheap stay. I liked the common area and kitchenette with free coffee etc. 20 minute walk to the attractions. The free shuttle was handy. Decent location. Not much within a 5 minute walk though. Good for a one night stay.
Perfect location to visit the village, in front of the supermarket and 10 minutes to the bus station. The owners are very kind and easy going, they provide towels and there is coffee and a fridge you can use
The location was very pleasant. Hotel conveniently situated; breakfast adequate. Small village with a number of suitable restaurants and food outlets. Onsen something that should be experienced but tub in room ideal.
Very nice staff. The shared spaces have a nice relaxed atmosphere. It was nice to have a private room. Good value for money. They will take you to the bus station by car in the morning.which is nice as it is a bit of a walk from ' the village'. By staying overnight you can visit the Shirakawa-go village early in the morning so it is not so busy yet.
Very kind host, good communication. Although the house is not in the middle of the historical village, it has its charm. The common area is really nice and coffee or tea are always available for free. I found it easy to reach the place walking 20 minutes from the bus station. The owner offers a shuttle service for free once per day, upon request, but I did not use it. The room was really small but very nice and comfortable.
Traditional ryokan style hostel. Our stay was comfy in general. The location is between the town and the village which suited our purpose of visit perfectly
Loved the style of the house. It almost felt like a cozy homestay with all amenities in place. There were scrapbooks with all information about the village which was very helpful and thoughtful of the host. Everything in the fridge was free for the guests to have and there were plenty of options. The location is just 10mins walk from the main bus station and the supermarket is just across the street. Loved the place!
Best value for your dollar in a remote Japanese mountain village
The villa was spacious, clean, comfortable, and luxurious. We were blown away by the interior aesthetics which exceeded the images shown on the listing. Amenities were generous and excellent facilities were provided. Cups, plates, beverage classes (from pretty Japanese tea cups to glass-cut sake cups were provided). Definitely able to accommodate a group of 5-6 comfortably. Bed was really comfy, clean, and the whole apartment smelled so good.
