The Thermal Reserve was very interesting and unique.
The Thermal Reserve was very interesting and unique. Sadly, the reception we received before entering through the main gate into the reserve was very disappointing. It left us a little shocked by the way we were treated.

Small but good peek at Maori culture. Loved the cultural show. Informative guide (Paora) who spoke well and very clear and deliberate. Great visitor center! Awesome natural wonders. Hangi and steamed pudding underwhelming though which should have been the icing on the cake. Overall enjoyed the area.

Fabulous tour through the village after a rousing concert of songs and dances. Excellent guide who explained the geysers, mud pools and hot springs and how they used the hot water for cooking and bathing.

The bespoke tattoo design by Jason at one of the shops in Whakarewarewa was the best souvenir from this trip by far—so meaningful and beautiful. Jason is Maori and asks questions about your life and the things you enjoy most to create a personalized design. Perhaps one day I will get a tattoo of this design! (Jason does tattoos, too, not just designs.)
