Trip back in time in a well-kept parador...worth an overnight stay.
    • Leisure trip
    • Family with young children
    • Standard Double Room
    • Stayed 1 night

    - LOCATION - You need a car to get here. I don't think there's public transportation available or even taking a taxi is practical. - ROOM - This is just my preference: I would have liked the decor to be more "medieval" for a more authentic experience which was a big reason for us choosing to make this stop on the way to Barcelona. I stayed in other paradors where the rooms felt more from the period. Except for the small wooden window, it looked like a regular modern day hotel room (see photos I uploaded). When I was looking at the site, I saw that the standard double rooms possibly offered a four poster bed or at least, big windows with drapes. The 2 rooms where we stayed looked different from the photos in the site. We came from a long drive so I didn't bother letting reception know and requesting for a room change (I don't even know if there were any of those types that were available when we checked in). We requested adjacent rooms so maybe these 2 were the only ones available next to each other. Nevertheless, I assumed all standard double rooms would more or less be decorated the same way regardless of what floor. Anyway- I suggest decorating all rooms with a medieval style painting and printed/embroidered drapes just to keep with the theme of the rest of the parador.

    - LOCATION- The parador is next to a medieval castle on top of a hill so it's isolated but the views are amazing! - INTERNET, STAFF & SERVICE, HOUSEKEEPING - all good. We only stayed overnight so can't comment on consistency. - COMMUNICATION was good before and after our stay. I had questions about the room and the attractions nearby and hotel staff answered promptly. - ROOM & AMENITIES - This would vary on the type of room you book. We got 2 standard double rooms (with breakfast included) and it was of average size, with TV, nice marble bathroom, comfortable mattress, airconditioning adjustable. There was a small window with a view of the plains below. (see my comment below for what could be better) - PARADOR AND CASTLE GROUNDS - The castle grounds is amazing. Lots of photo worthy spots and just places and nooks for daydreaming, introspection and wandering around. The parador itself is well kept and has common rooms for socializing, reading and dining (including a cafe bar) - ROOM RATE - We paid about EUR 150/night for a standard double room with breakfast. - FOOD - Food was good, not great. Reasonably priced. The dining hall ambience is amazing. We had dinner there. Breakfast on the other hand was very good! See photo of the buffet spread. You can also order eggs, churros (not available from the buffet but available to order for free). - NEARBY ATTRACTIONS - We bought a ticket to the salt mine tour but missed it when we arrived later than usual. It is recommended to visit so make time for it (note the day when they are closed). The salt mine is very near the parador and can be viewed from the tower (see my photo). We didn't explore the town below so can't comment on that.

A unique and special off-the-beaten path experience when visiting Barcelona!

No all rooms have a view - some rooms have only a tiny window at the top of a tall ceiling and you can't see outside at all. That's the room we ended up getting even though we booked many months in advance. The pillows were super flat and uncomfortable but the bed was great. Also there seems to only be heating in the rooms, no AC.

Bar and Restaurant were great and convenient! The property is fantastic and staff was very friendly and helpful. The views from the castle onto the town of Cardona and the valley are superb. Highly recommend this experience!

The numbering systems on the elevator were a bit confusing. Either just using a simple 1,2,3 or, better still, indicating the main function on each floor like, reception level, rooms number XXX foe each level might be better.

Did not have a meal there but breakfast was super and in general all the staff were very friendly and went out of their way to accommodate our every needs.

I know it's meant to be old but the corridor carpets were ridiculously threadbare - so strange when everything else oozed quality.

Epic castle in an epic location. So much real and significant history to the place and yet an excellent level of comfort and service within the hotel. Just looking out to the landscape below, and the mountains beyond was fabulous.

We arrived by bus and weren’t aware that meant we had to walk up the steep hill to get to the castle on foot with heavy luggage. Taxis wouldn’t take such a small fare. Had we known this, we would have planned differently. Pulling luggage op the hill is not recommended!

Lovely staff, great service. Beautiful location. Pretty special to stay in a castle with such incredible history.

Had to catch a train and a long taxi ride. Best for guests with a car.

Fantastic historic property. A destination in itself ( tours came to visit the castle fortress around our accomodation ). Well restored and maintained. Rooms spacious and four poster beds luxurious. Able to explore the history at our leisure. Plenty of information available on the tumultuous past of the fortress. Local old town of interest at bottom of the hill that the castle was perched upon.

We would have liked provision of coffee earlier in the morning (as the bar/café only opened at 11am), without having to pay for the full breakfast.

The castle was so beautiful and had amazing views. The room was very comfortable, with a really big and nice bed, with a good desk and the room had a great bathroom. Wifi works really well. We enjoyed the bar especially as it has a nice outdoor area.

The walk from the Cardona town to the Castle can be tiring (best to have a car or book a taxi) , especially if you are walking around with stroller bags. The food can be expensive, but there are many cheap options in the town square. There is nothing much to do in Cardona except for the castle and visiting the salt mine.

It is a Lovely Castle , 2 hours away from Barcelona. The rooms are clean and the view from the castle is superb. Try room number 712 - I've heard some interesting spooky stories about this one.
