Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We are currently testing a weighted review system in Malta and Iceland (excluding hotel and vacation rental chains). For properties in these countries, the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

BelgiumCan't think of anything! Be aware there aren't many restaurants nearby so dinner might be a bit of a challenge, but there's a convenience store nearby (10 min walk) or you can take the bus into town.
Nikko can become quite crowded, but that won't affect you in this hotel. It's on the edge of town and thus away from the masses, but still perfectly situated to plan your visit to the surrounding area. Personnel is extremely friendly and facilities are really nice, especially the in-house onsen. Traditional room is a great experience - just make sure to bring an eye cover if you are a light sleeper (the traditional windows don't really keep the light out).

United StatesThe cutest ryokan next to the gorgeous river, with the sweetest ryokan keeper ever. She was so kind and made sure to make our stay comfortable. It was amazing to fall asleep to the sound of the river on a comfortable bed after a soak in the private onsen. Can't wait to go back!

FranceSimple the best stay we had in Japan. Excellent service. Very welcoming and benevolent hosts. We were provided with detailed information on the sites to visit + a clear map. Clean and rather spacious room with a lovely view and on river stream. Onsen and yukata. Plenty to do around by walk. Tea and coffee available+ fridge and microwave Lovely onsen/sento that can be used privately We loved the serene and family feeling of this small hotel. We will happily come back someday!

NetherlandsWe stayed here for 2 days, the location was breath taking! It is a bit of a walk from the busstop to the hotel but it is worth it. The staff was really kind and my favorite part was the onsen with incredible view, overall a pretty good experience!

GermanyReally special accomodation. We stayed as a couple in the traditional Japanese room. The staff was lovely, the surrounding area was beautiful and close to all main sights and the bus station, but still kind of nestled away in a beautiful japanese suburban area. It is quiet and right next to the river. From our room we had a river view and could hear the stream at night. Restaurants were close by. The breakfast was nice, the staff was really helpful and provided information about the main sights. The private onsen bath also had a river view and Kimono-type clothing was provided for the visit. It was one of my favorite places that we stayed at in Japan. It really made Nikko one of the most romantic destinations.

United StatesCould have used pegs in the foyer, bathroom or closet for the robes.
We loved the Japanese style rooms, robes, onsite onsen. We also loved the location with a river view yet still near amenities such as the bus and the Lawsons convenience market. Staff was very friendly and helpful (called us a cab on our last day when it was pouring rain and we were starting 14 hours of travel and didn't want to start it by getting soaking wet walking the few blocks to the bus).

PolandNice location. Very helpful and kind host. Private onsen was available and very nice with a view of the river. Tea and coffee in the shared dinning area were provided for free. We got a room with a window with a river view. You could hear the river in the room. It got a little cold at night but the bed was warm and a heater device was provided.

AustraliaNote: not about the hotel but the location generally and need for travel planning - Nikko is more difficult to get around without a car for certain things. The local convenience store is closed, and a lot of other cafes/restaurants too (not sure if permanently or just for the season). There are a couple of restaurants a walkable distance, but a bit more planning required if only using the bus/walking to get food, especially breakfast. There is in-house breakfast that looked good, but not everyone wants that style/size of breakfast everyday.
Lovely location on the river, near the woods. The private onsen was excellent - very hot and welcome after a cold day outside. Room was large. Possible to walk into town (25 mins) and to many attractions.

SingaporeGetting to the hotel was quite a drag, unfortunately. It's located pretty far from the main road, and on the first day we checked in, the staff at the Tourist Information Centre actually told us to alight at the wrong bus stop, which added more walking miles than was necessary. So dragging our huge luggage all the way in freezing weather wasn't such a great experience. However, once we got our bearings right, getting to the bus stop from our hotel was much easier.
We liked the onsen and the dining hall. On the first day we checked in, we were rather disappointed to get a Western style room because the table and chairs arranged in the middle of the room in between the beds actually made the room look smaller than it is. It feels kind of cramped, and the view outside the window was meh (there was an old wooden tool shed just outside the window). We requested to change the room to a Japanese style room with tatami mats, and the property owner was kind enough to agree to our change with no extra charge. We spent the first night chatting late into the night in the dining hall, which was spacious and has a homely feel. I love spending time there over a cup of tea in the morning too, a very good place to chill and enjoy 'me time'. Both checking-in and checking-out were a breeze, and the lady owner was so kind and gracious, though not the chatty type. She also recommended places to get food (for breakfast and dinner) if we're running late, since the restaurants around the area close pretty early at 8 p.m. Alternatively, if you don't mind combini / convenience store food, there's always LAWSON, just after you alight from the bus stop. We had our dinner there on the second night. The location is also literally steps away from the Kanmangafuchi Abyss, which makes for a pleasant stroll in the early morning light.

AustraliaDespite travelling in low season, and being the only guest in the whole hotel for a few days, I was given a single person room. They could have given me a two-person room allowing a little more space to spread out, without costing any more in cleaning or affecting business.
The on-site bath was fantastic. View of the stream outside. Sole use (users have to take it in turns but I was the only guest for most of the time I was there.) Manager was extremely kind and helpful guiding me to nearby restaurants and shops, as well as shrines and temples.
