How guest reviews work
Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We are currently testing a weighted review system in Malta and Iceland (excluding hotel and vacation rental chains). For properties in these countries, the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
- Politically sensitive comments
- Promotional content
- Illegal activities
- Personal or sensitive information (e.g. emails, phone numbers or credit card info)
- Swear words, sexual references, hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, or references to violence
- Spam and fake content
- Animal cruelty
- Impersonation (e.g. if the writer is claiming to be someone else)
- Any violation of our review guidelines.
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.

It has dinner included, but the hot pot (main dish) was always the same for the whole 3 nights we stayed there. They could include other main dishes, it felt it was all nights de same.

I think that it's a bit overpriced because you don't get any emnesties beyond tea that you make in your room with a tea pot.. I get that it's traditional....but you know..still. Even for drinks you need to get them at the machine. Also I must say that the lighting could be better as the night lamp was really low so we almost always stayed with the main white light..
The location is superb if you are looking to be at the heart of gion. The old streets and temples are a close walk. The room itself was very tidy and having a ryokan experience was nice. The shower for me was great it had a sitting shower design as in onsens. The staff were really nice and helped with all our logistical needs. They do offer massages at an additional cost.

Would recommend sending bags to avoid walking luggage from train.
Very well located for exploring Gion/ Higashiyama on foot, breakfast was excellent quality with a wide range of things, and the staff helpful.

Stellar location, amazing shower, comfy beds, tasty pour-over coffees in the room. Breakfast was delicious and filling. Staff were friendly and attentive. We had a small issue with our room upon arrival but the staff remedied it quickly. I would definitely stay here again!

All was very pleasant. There was thing about Gion Ryokan Karaku that we disliked.
Location is excellent, right in the middle of the old town. We walked everywhere, a lot of temples and historical sites nearby.

The room was too small for four people. The pictures are misleading. Also the stay was too expensive for this small room. Finally the windows were blocked by a fence. No view whatsoever.
Loved the location. The place is super clean. Also we had dinner included and it was very interesting.

The futon could be fluffier and the pillow could be softer.
Love the size of the Ryokan, the staff was friendly and location was great, walkable to the shops but still peaceful.

It's a traditional ryokan so keep in mind that you will sleep on futons mattresses on the tatami. I piled up 3 for comfort. I wish there was a way to log in to our streaming services on the TV as we got tired of watching Japanese TV.
The staff is incredible and will bend over backwards to all your demands. They speak English which helped a lot. They made us feel welcome. The breakfast is very balanced and very good overall. Our room was spacious and quiet.

WiFi can be patchy. That’s the only downside.
Love the furnishing and the space! Amazing location as well. Staff were exceptional and very attentive to our needs. LOVE the breakfast!!! We had breakfast twice at the hotel and both times they switched up the menu and we loved every meal! Really good value for money.

Considering the price, the food flavors could be more exceptional. But it looked amazing and huge quantities.
Super nice staff from the reception to the restaurant. It's a beautiful experience to stay in a Ryokan like Karaku and they always made sure we were having the best time. The breakfast and dinner ritual was a great experience (even though, for the price, the food quality could be improved).

The only thing to point is the heat. The room was so warm and there was no air conditioning. They suggested us to open the windows which I think it would have helped a lot as it was a cool night but my son was all bitten by Moses from previous nights and had a terrible allergic reaction so we just slept pretty much without clothes in that warm room.
Everything was great in this place.

My 3 years old kid was charged additionally for the bed, although the reservation and payment made previously had included the pricing for 1 kid.

Even though its kind of a long walk from the train station it is still a nice walk. Also would have liked at least one option for a razor and the rest for purchase is fine.
The value was great and the size of the room was huge! Gave us everything we were looking for and the view wasn't too bad either! Great location with in Gion. We were very close to all the beautiful streets that have a lot of restaurants and things to see.
