Bad staff at a good location. Hotel staff were unwelcoming to us. We were really excited to stay but staff "Demoder"was dismissive and did not explain any nuances of staying at Ryokan, room features, protocol none of that. Thought we booked with dinner service I was told curlty we did not. We even ran to make it to the 5pm cut off. Had we known we'd have stayed elsewhere with better value for money.

    Good location. Nice room.

Air-conditioner was noisy. Having to return a key every time you leave room is not fun. Fresh water had to be asked for everyday. Breakfast was too expensive...though didn't have it for that reason.

    Location was excellent .

As the rooms use physical keys, they ask that you leave your key at the front desk when leaving. Although they were always present at the front desk, it did make me worried that if I got back too late that I might not be able to get into my room without bothering someone.

Breakfast was amazing, and had a lot of variety. The location was quite accessible to some really nice areas to enjoy Kyoto's sights. Additionally, getting to and from the inn was convenient to get to from Kyoto Station.

Honestly nothing, was a really nice place to stay in

The rooms were a really good size, I love the food that they had prepared for us in the morning. It was warm and comfortable to sleep as well. The little snacks they would leave everytime they cleaned the place i loved they were so tasty! Location was really good, I felt everything was a good walkable distance for shops and restaurants. Close to a bus stop as well to venture out further.

The AC is big and loud, but the stuff was very helpful in solving this problem. We asked the stuff to unlock the windows and we slept with the windows open and had the AC switched off.

This ryokan gives you the traditional experience of a traditional Japanese room with modern facilities. The room looked perfect and the futons were very comfy.

The property was lovely, with an outlook over a shrine from our room. The futon is a little thin for my back, but this was to be expected.

From the moment we arrived we were met with smiling staff who were there to help with anything and everything our entire stay. We had reserved a room with private bath (onsen but without the mineral spring water) which was a wonderful experience as we weren’t comfortable going to a public onsen. My son and I loved exploring, and there is so much to see in the area. From traditional breakfasts to a Kaiseki dinner, futon beds and the bathing room it summed up a traditional Kyoto experience for me.

Room was already set up for sleep when we checked in at 3pm which meant table and chairs had been pushed against the wall and could only be used by 2 of us when there were 4 of us and we had to double the beds up just so we could have a walking space and get our luggage sorted. Was off putting from the get go. This place was not good value for money at all. The mats were too thin and pillows were dreadful. Do not recommend a stay here.

The location was good for exploring Kiyomizu-dera, Ninenzaka & Sannenzaka which are must do’s. Lovely location just to walk around.

I can't say that there was anything I did not like.

The staff were very helpful and extremely curious. They helped us book restaurant reservations... and the places they chose were out of this world. The room was traditional with tatami which was wonderful to walk on, but we also had a water cooker and a refrigerator in a separate section of the room. We booked the breakfast as part of the package, and that was just wonderful! It included a Bento box. So if you are going to book the breakfast, you have to be into Japanese food. This was perfect for us.

At 36k JPY/night I think it wasn't value for money. Room amenities weren't that great - bathroom was really small. The Ryokan has several floors and the outside of the room (lobby) feels like a normal hotel and lacks the traditional feel.

Breakfast - Really nice. Light meal with rice, several side dishes, some sashimi and fish. It was very varied, yet wasn't heavy at all. Room is traditional There are a bunch of convenience stores nearby down the road.

I found this ryokan lacking a little charm compared to some others we stayed in. We also had trouble getting the kids to eat the traditional breakfast and there were no western options. We ended up having to seek out other places for breakfast instead. We were not offered a refund for the cancelled breakfasts which I found a little difficultly to swallow given the 40AUD pp we had paid.

Gion Ryokan Karaku was well located and the family room for four that we booked was large and light. The breakfast was quite impressive if you are wanting a fully traditional breakfast experience.
