Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We are currently testing a weighted review system in Malta and Iceland (excluding hotel and vacation rental chains). For properties in these countries, the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

United StatesNothing. Everything was perfect.
this was hands-down, the best guesthouse experience of my entire life. The host was incredibly hospitable and with donation-based dinner every night at 7:30, he created an environment of warm sociability that you probably will not find anywhere else have spent many weeks in Japan and I have stayed in many guest houses, and this one is by far the best stay I have ever been in, even the second best that I’ve been in doesn’t even hold a candle to this one. Thank you to Hide for his wonderful hospitality. I wish I could give this a rating of a million stars.

IrelandI spent one night here and would have loved to stay longer. Hide-san created a little paradise in his house. As a solo traveller or couple, if you are looking for a social/local experience with long nights of talking and sharing with the other guests, this is the perfect place. Home-cooked dinner based on donation was the best food I've had in Japan so far.

GermanyEverything was just perfect. We will go there again.
Breakfast was included in the room price. There was freshly cooked rice every morning. You can use the kitchen and American style Bread, butter, honey, jam, ham, eggs, etc were always available. One needs to prepare breakfast themselves. Dinner is on donation basis. All the guests come together in the evening and enjoy the tasty Japanese homecooked food from the Host. Many of the guests staying there also cooked. There was just unlimited food and Sake. I even learned a to prepare a few Japanese side dishes. Rest you should experience it by yourself. I cannot wait to go there again. The host speaks English. The Staff was very helpful.

Very unique homestyle accommodation. We had a very busy day from Tokyo to Yamagata and when we reach into this house we feel so welcome, the checkin lady is nice to show us around. We didn’t join their gathering at night but the owner is so kind to offer 1 glass of drink. It is truly a nice and special experience! Car park is available too in front the buidling.

AustraliaThe room wasn’t huge but we managed.
The community atmosphere! it was lovely, there is dinner cooked by the staff every night (payable by donation), friends of the owner come round and it feels like a family dinner where you can try different local food and hang out with local people. The kitchen area was super cosy and homely.

United StatesFantastic stay, nothing to add here.
Hide and his staff were very welcoming. They gave us a tour of the house and invited us to their family meal (donation based). This meal was by far the best meal we've had in Japan, home cooked, healthy and extremely homey and comforting. If home cooked meals aren't your thing then the house is also stocked with snacks and quick food you can heat/warm up for a reasonable price. We really enjoyed family meal, it gave us an opportunity to meet the other guests and chat with Hide about his recipes. Thank you for everything! We hope to be back again soon!

NetherlandsYou might need to use the earplugs they provide, if you want to sleep early. (But then you are missing out, as mentioned above.)
This place is an absolute experience in itself! Plan to spend some time home in the evening, chatting with the owner, while he cooks a shared dinner (most evenings, according to him. TASTY!) and the other guests. The staff speaks English very well.

GermanyNothing, really nothing.
Lovely staff, Hide has transformed his parents house into a guest house. His staff and he prepare a free dinner every evening - it was sooo good, everything home cooked! You can have a nice conversation with Hide. Make sure to make a donation into the box. In the morning you can prepare a breakfast by yourself, the basic ingredients like coffee, milk, eggs are in the fridge. I felt like staying in a friend house. Everything was based on trust. Amazing experience. The bed was comfy, room/kitchen/bath was super clean. I hope I will come back one day again 🥰

Hide San and his helpers are really nice and kind. They make you feel confortable and at home. It feels like a big family. My bedroom was really confortable. The breakfast is nice too with a lot of choice and you can also have dinner for the price that YOU decide. This is so affordable compared to the quality of the food and the people you meet there. During my stay, on my first night there, a lot of guests were here and Hide San sang for us with his guitar and we ended up all dancing with him. And on my last day while I was home Hide San was teaching English to a small group of Japanese. They all tried to discuss with me and offered me food. These is the kind of atmosphere I experienced at Mintaro Hut, and I will never forget it. I highly recommend this place 😊

ItalyThe owner and all the staff is very welcoming, kind and always ready to help. Mintaro Hut is specially amazing if you want to socialize a little bit with other people, as guest are invited to join the staff for dinner (with a small donation). The dinner is really really good, with lots of different dishes, also vegetarian, and very abundant!! Keep this in mind if you prefer quiet places and solitude, as Mintaro Hut is more about creating a familiar and warm place (that could also mean noise).
