Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We are currently testing a weighted review system in Malta and Iceland (excluding hotel and vacation rental chains). For properties in these countries, the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

United StatesWe have no complaints. However, it is not a big hotel with lots of grounds compared to the sister inn. Also, if you are looking for outdoor hot springs, this is not the place for you.
Food was amazing. Service was amazing. We felt well taken care of. Love the private hot springs bath and using the owl indicator to know which bath was open. We also visited the sister inn's outdoor hot springs which had a small divider between men's and women's. I was able to speak with my spouse while there. The grounds there were beautiful. Saw stray or outdoor cats outside as well. Super cute.

United StatesThis hotel provides free access to their sister hotel Tocen Goshoboh onsen facilities next door. However, the staffs at Tocen Goshoboh were rude and unwelcoming. We did not enjoy the onsen experience at Tocen Goshoboh. However, this is not Hanakoyado's fault. The management at Tocen Goshoboh should look into this issue as I saw countless negative reviews about Tocen Goshoboh and their rudeness staffs.
Most sincere, honest, professional and passionate staffs we encountered in the entire 12 days trip in Japan. Private and cozy onsen facilities. Old, authentic yet beautiful and charming onsen hotel building. The best dinner and breakfast we during our trip in Japan. We had the best time (and meals) at Hotel Hanakoyado!

AustraliaBeds were on the firmer side whereas I prefer a typically softer bed. External sounds were noticeable, though guests were generally considerate.
Arima Onsen is already a gem, but the staff made our stay exceptional. We opted for the breakfast and dinner package, and it was money well spent. The staff's warmth and helpfulness added a personal touch, making our experience truly memorable.

SingaporeWe could hear noises from the next door and even from outside the hotel. However, this is understandable due to the hotel's design. We came prepared by learning from the comments of other guests.
Had a great experience with the private hot spring at Hotel Hanakoyado. Dinner was served in Omakase style and very filling. Breakfast could be better, but we liked the grilled fish! The staffs are kind and friendly.

Traditional ryokan with small onsen as part of the hotel. They are private onsen, so you can go there as a couple / family. Definitely recommend to book the dinner even if it seems bit expensive. It is worth it! Best experience we had in Japan.

Australia- Hard bed (pretty standard). Asking for extra bedding to cushion the bed is helped considerably. - Thin walls. (luckily most guests are respectful) -The machine wasn't working when I tried to use it, wasting the free pod (single one supplied with the room) in my attempt. These pods were weirdly expensive (especially for Japan) at 300 yen each. Considerably cheaper hotels had far more capable/expensive machines which could be used for free. This wouldn't be an issue (and let's be honest it's extremely miner) if coffee shops in Japan didn't open at around 10am or later.
Extremely relaxing. The private onsen was far better than expected, and it was exceptionally nice being able to use it anytime it's convenient for you. Staying the night in a more traditional Japanese building was a special expensive.

SingaporeNothing really, but compare to my previous meals at other onsen hotels, i feel it is not as value for money. Also note that they have a sister hotel Goshobo which has a better public onsen.
One of the staff speaks good English and she is patient to explain everything to us during orientation. Meals are good, esp for dinner it is omakase full of surprises, breakfast is also good. A great experience if you have not tried any onsen hotel in Japan before. The private onsen is good and available easily, I like the effect of the kin water.
