Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We are currently testing a weighted review system in Malta and Iceland (excluding hotel and vacation rental chains). For properties in these countries, the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

United KingdomAll good!
Beautiful temple with lovely gardens. I’m vegetarian but don’t love vegan food but thought the meal was really nice and really nicely presented. Staff very friendly. Really enjoyed the morning ceremony. The room it was held in is lovely. Very kind of the monk to speak in English some of the time. Also very convenient location.

JapanExcellent, would stay again in a heartbeat. They were fantastic with my wife’s allergies and provided delicious changes that didn’t leave her wanting during the stay. It was clean and comfortable and we loved the space. Everyone was polite and helpful regardless of language barrier and it was a really relaxing stay whilst learning about the history of Koyasan.

United KingdomNothing, it was a great experience
We really enjoyed our trip to Koyasan and we think it will probably go down as one of the highlights of our time in Japan. Despite it being bitterly cold the room was heated and we were comfortable staying there for the night! The staff were helpful and friendly and the dinner/breakfast included was nice, albeit very traditional! The transport from Osaka was very easy as well, would recommend going to the ticket office at Namba Station (Central gate) and the staff know what you need to get there in one piece. I would definitely recommend only taking a small bag and leaving your suitcases at a hotel/in the city, it’s not impossible to travel to Koyasan with them, but we saw a few people with large bags and it seemed to make life a bit more challenging! We would definitely recommend staying here and would happily come again if we find ourselves in Japan in future!

GermanyIf traveling in winter, be prepared that the cloister is old and not well isolated, thus rather cold. Inside the room it is ok due to the provided heaters, but for the corridors you‘ll need warm clothing.
Unique experience of lodging in a beautiful buddhist temple. The place has a very special atmosphere. The (buddhist vegetarian) dinner and breakfast were rich and very tasty. The staff was super welcoming and friendly. Good onsen bath. Traditional Japanese-style room (tatami mats and futon beds) was really spatious and comfortable.

NetherlandsSince we came during winter, at night the hall way is freezing. Since bathroom and toilets are shared, it felt a bit cold.
The temple was absolutely beautiful and calm. This is an unique experience you won’t have else where. The breakfast and dinner were so delicious even thought both are vegetarian.

SingaporeNot a complain but some additional explanation on the morning prayers would help. There was some distraction when the more pious travelers did not know what to do once the monk started his chant,
The food was good and so was the room and bath.

PortugalJokiin is a very special place to stay if you want to have a ryokan traditional experience! The staff is super kind and lovely, the room was an interior room, it had windows but we had no view for the outside, they have other rooms that have windows for the outside. Anyway it was very comfortable and I loved it! The vegetarian/vegan meals are just the best! <3 Bare in mind that Jokiin is a temple so it has specific rules like a specific sleeping time. Just bare that in mind when booking. 100% recommend the stay!

AustraliaThere is nothing we didn’t like. Everything was perfect.
The evening meal in our room was very special, presented in a traditional manner and delicious. The Bathhouse is simple but clean and good. The breakfast was delicious, a wonderful and filling vegan meal served in a lovely environment after the morning prayer ceremony. We are so glad we attended morning prayer. We ate breakfast with the other attendees. The staff are all welcoming and helpful.

United StatesFutons were relatively uncomfortable compared to other futons I’ve slept on in other ryokans across Japan. I slept fine on them but I noticed the difference, so some people may be negatively affected more than me. Somewhat far walking distance to Okunoin cemetery, about 25 minutes on foot, when other lodgings are much closer. Price is high for the quality of the rooms, but you’re paying to stay in a Buddhist temple, not to have high quality amenities that you could otherwise get for the same price at different lodgings at different regions of Japan. Public hot bath was closed except in the evening, however there’s a private shower/bathtub that is open if you want to use otherwise.
Beautiful Buddhist temple. The dinner and breakfast were delicious and very filling, as someone who eats a lot and struggled to find larger portions in Japan. I’m not vegan but really enjoyed the high quality and excellent variety of Japanese dishes. Public bath was nice and hot.
