Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We are currently testing a weighted review system in Malta and Iceland (excluding hotel and vacation rental chains). For properties in these countries, the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

MalaysiaNothing much.
This is a cozy guesthouse with shared bathroom. The host is a nice guy that try his best to introduce us the nearby place to visit despite he speaks very little English. Kotan onsen is just 5 mins drive away and is a nice place to stop by to see the swan and lake.

AustraliaMale bathroom had only one toilet, which considering how many people can stay in this guesthouse, would be great if there was one or two more.
Interestingly built guesthouse. Wooden beams + high ceilings gives it a roomy feeling. Bed was comfortable with plenty of light. Fantastic location for nature lovers - plenty of mountains and lakes to explore. 24/7 running bath, which always great.

JapanThere's no air conditioning and it can get very hot in summer. The facilities could be cleaner. There's nothing within walking distance around the guest house, so if you need anything you're stuck with what you have. I wouldn't say that the staff is incredibly welcoming, perhaps the effect of covid-19 and the recent tourist wave.
There's a difference between a Starbucks and a local family-run cafe - this place is a family business and at times it can feel like you're staying at someone's house rather than a hotel. Overall I had a pleasant experience and might come back when I'm in Hokkaido again. The building is very nice. Light in the common area in the morning and daytime is beautiful. Location lets you get to Kussharo Lake by car or bike, or even on foot if you don't mind long walks. Food (breakfast and dinner) is good. The morning trip to see the sunrise and clouds over the lake is unforgettable. Rooms and beds are comfortable, it's convenient to have a sink in the room. Shuttle service from and to the station for me is a lifesaver. Two friendly cats are very nice. Surrounding nature is stunning.

IndonesiaIt’s a youth hostel, so don’t expect too much. The whole house was quite dusty. The beds are hard, uncomfortable and run down beyond reason. You can easily hear the other occupants of the house talking and rumbling in their rooms.
Very homely lounge and restaurant area with high ceiling and a view out to the birch trees. The dinner (reservation in advance) is very good.

Costa RicaToilets seem a bit dated. But it’s no big deal.
The location, the ambience and the rooms were all gorgeous. The owner makes absolutely delicious dinner and shows you the gorgeous places around the area. There’s a small library, a spacious common area, the internet works fine and the rooms are beautiful.

GermanyThe location is not really convenient to get around if you do not bring or rent a vehicle of some kind. The railway shuttle is great and if you book a tour with the owner (very reasonably priced!) you will be fine as he is happy to drive you. The Kussharo lake peninsula (Wakoto peninsula), arguably the closest sightseeing destination within reach (and really beautiful!), can be reached by walking around 15km round trip, which took me ~ 5 hours.
I can highly recommend to stay at this hostel if you are open minded and interested in a genuine experience. The owner and staff are very friendly and even created a little film to introduce you to the area and show which activities could be done. The owner is such a cool person, he shuttled me from and to the train station and took me on an "Ankai Tour" to watch the sun rise above a sea of clouds. Also, the meals at the hostel are just great. Very tasty and flavorful, they are cooking with a great variety of ingredients. Make sure you prebook your dinner by contacting the facility as they need some time to prepare those fancy meals. (They still offer a little menu of a la carte dishes in case you come by spontaneously.) There is a Japanese style shared bathroom with a hot onsen pool, great after a long walk. To sum it up: A very special, unique experience that is very good value for money!
