Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We are currently testing a weighted review system in Malta and Iceland (excluding hotel and vacation rental chains). For properties in these countries, the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

United StatesWe would have liked to book a room with a private onsen and Japanese beds but these were not available for the two rooms we needed. We ended up with futons, which were comfortable. However, the situation was not that pleasant as once the futons were set up, there was no other place to sit in the room except for a small enclosed porch that was chilly. The couple in our party who were able to book the onsen room had a lovely accommodation that would have been highly desirable.
We really enjoyed the charming hospitality extended by all of the staff. The graciousness that was extended to us made our trip particularly nice. We also greatly appreciated the chef and the marvelous food that he prepared and served us, It was truly a wonderful experience. We would also like to extend a special thank you to the owner of the Ryokan who helped us search for a missing wallet that we later found in a backpack. We tried to send an email to thank her but could not get the message delivered.

The food was very traditional and I loved it. I loved the accommodations that they provided. They were patient with us and any inconveniences that we made as foreigners, they were happy to help with.

Saudi ArabiaThe hotel will make feel the Japanese culture. There are traditional cloths for free if you want to go the onsen. The staff are wearing Kimono and you are required to remove your shoes before entering the Hotel. The breakfast is different every day and there are variety of choices. The Hotel offers free shuttle bus to the Snow Monkey Park and the train station, yet, you need to communicate with the staff first to reserve a spot.

HungaryThe train station is quite far. We took up on us to walk because it’s only a 15 mins walk but it wasn’t a pleasant one…
We arrived early and the staff was super helpful where to go eat and what’s around. They offer free shuttle service to the Snow Monkey Park. Our room had a private onsen. The whole guesthouse has a very good vibe. We ordered the dinner and the breakfast offered by the guesthouse and both were delicious.

AustraliaAn exceptional experience of traditional a Japanese guesthouse. Etiquette was explained so there weren't any embarrassing missteps, decor was subtle, rooms were very comfortable (ours had private bathroom facilities - rare to find with this style of accommodation), exceptional attention by staff (right down to directing traffic for our parking and departure), delicious traditional Japanese breakfast, tasteful onsen in house. We rate this exceptionally high and would love to stay again.

United StatesThis is not an inexpensive stay...but the room was beautiful, tranquil and our private onsen (hot tub) was exquisite., fed by an endless stream of naturally flowing water from two of the towns nine hot springs. The food was delicious and beautifully presented and the hotel is situated in a charming village.

The private onsen within the room was really great as you can enjoy it whenever you want. The room is spacious and warm and the bed was comfortable. The kaiseki dinner was delicious and they really made sure that it catered to my dietary needs. I have communicated before I arrived. There was a shuttle to go to the monkey park in the morning but you do have to take the paid bus back to the ryokan or station. I chose to go to the snow monkey park on the morning that I checked out, so they also helped transfer my luggage to a cafe nearby the station.

United StatesThe hotel is a little dated, which we didn’t mind. The service and overall experience more than balanced that out. My thought is that new carpet in the lobby and hallways would freshen things right up.
Friendly, welcoming, helpful, and professional staff. Room was comfortable and well appointed. Enjoyed the clean indoor/outdoor onsen.

New ZealandThe location is on the border of (i.e. just outside) the main Shibu Onsen town area. Which means you don't get access to all the 9 public bath houses (from memory, you get access to 2 of the 9). BUT ... in the cold of winter, the thought of walking around in a thin yukata trying to get the ink stamps to prove we visited all 9 public onsens in 24 hours does not appeal, sooo ... not really a big deal for us! However, is it for you?
We wanted to visit Shibu Onsen in between skiing Madarao Kogen and Shiga Kogen. Found this place on on Booking.com (shout out!) and it looked like it had everything (well, almost everything, I'll come to that) that we were looking for in a ryokan in an onsen area. And it proved to be that and more. This ryokan has a wonderful vibe/feel to it. It's an older property (almost all ryokans are) that is very well maintained. The room was lovely and spacious. We had a good view of the river below. The futons are exceptionally comfortable (we do not regularly sleep on the floor, and I have slept in a lot of tatami mat/futon rooms now, so I feel qualified to comment for the benefit of fellow travellers!). The private onsens within the ryokan (indoor and outdoor) are great. Dinner and breakfast is included in the room rate. The food was very, very good. But the standout was the classic Japanese, family owned/run ryokan hospitality. The service was gracious and outstanding. Wafu no Yado Masuya is everything you want in a quality ryokan experience. At an outstanding quality-to-price ratio. Not the cheapest but certainly not the most expensive. One of the best value ryokans we have stayed at in Japan.
