Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We are currently testing a weighted review system in Malta and Iceland (excluding hotel and vacation rental chains). For properties in these countries, the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

United StatesIt would have been nice to know when the shuttle was available for train station pickups. I emailed in advance and then called but was told that the shuttle wouldn’t pick us up until 2:00 pm and it was only 11:30 when we arrived. Thankfully there was the bus or taxi but understanding the hours of operation would have been nice.
The staff was incredibly friendly and really went out of their way to provide support for anything you might need. The one onsen we visited in the hotel was so relaxing. We were got lucky and had the whole place to ourselves. Dinner and breakfast were incredible. If you are used to eating huge meals it might fill you up for I was stuffed after the many dishes. Soda and other beverages are added to your bill if you booked with meals included so something to be aware of. Not a big deal in the grand scheme of things but just be aware in case you have teens who think the drinks are unlimited. We took the train in from Tokyo and then caught the bus to the Inn. The bus was really easy to take. There didn’t seem to be a shuttle for train pickups or to the Snow Monkeys when we arrived around 11:00am so we took the bus. We got the Snow Monkey all inclusive pass in Nagano so it was easy to hop on and off at will. I doubt the bus is expensive but not having to worry about the cost and just show the pass was very nice. The Snow Monkey park was very close by and a wonderful experience. The side trip to Yadanaka was the highighlight of our trip and the Inn played a big part in that.

United StatesThe room was a little small but we were very comfortable.
The staff was super nice and accommodating. They picked us up from the station and shuttled us to the monkey park. The service was outstanding! They set up our futon beds while we were out for dinner, and they even called to check that we weren’t too cold in the room and offered us a heater. The breakfast was delicious and we really enjoyed walking along the alley to onsen town.

First the service is amazing. It felt more like a 4 star hotel. We could not check in earlier but they had our luggages brought to the room already when we came back at 3+ to check in. They served tea and snacks in the room while explaining the facilities in the hotel. They helped to set up the room with tatami while we were at dinner and also helped to tiday and keep them when we went out in the morning. The dinner is amazing!! The best meal in japan and lasting close to 1.5hr. Quality food and the chef took into account of our request to exclude sashimi for the kids. They have shuttle services to snow monkey park as well as yudanaka station. No access to the public baths in shibu onsen but it is fine as thr hotel has 2 outdoor onsens which are amazing. The switch between male and female at stipulated timings. Awesome place to stay!! Really loved it and its surrounding.

AustraliaLack of communication about the free shuttle to and from Nagano Station. Staff saw us at Nagano Station but made no attempt to speak with us. Staff then hopped in the van after sighting us and left abruptly. We later learned that she was from our hotel and was supposed to transfer us to the accomodation. See previous comment.
The property is located two minutes from the local bus stop. The bus takes you to the foot of the mountain where entry to the Snow Monkey Park is. You return to this spot to buy the return bus trip back to the property. We especially liked the free shuttle bus to Nagano Station in the morning. This helped immensely with our luggage. We later realised that the accomodation ran a free shuttle from the station to the accomodation. Something that was not communicated to us beforehand by the hotel staff. Had we known this, we would have been much happier as it was significantly hard work pushing luggage up hill for almost 2k across very poorly sealed foot paths and very narrow roads.

AustraliaThe staff were very friendly and helpful. We took the free shuttle at 9.45am to the Snow Monkey Park. You still have to walk 1.8km from the stop to the park. We ended up walking back to the hotel as it was all downhill. There are meant to be hourly public buses back. We enjoyed sleeping in a traditional ryokan but 2 nights was enough. I read many reviews about how great the food was. We had 2 breakfasts and one kaiseki dinner. The food was nice but we have had much nicer food at other places in Japan. The private onsen was great.

SingaporeNot walking distance to yudanaka station, bus is the only viable option. Not ideal for large group with large luggage.
Hotel staff service was superb. We requested pickup at Yudanaka station due to large group and the hotel staff replied promptly and showed up on time. Only A few of them could speak good english. They were also very attentive and meticulous in explaining the use of slippers, hot bath facilities nearby. Shibu onsen is within walking distance but restaurants were limited and many not open for dinner during our stay on dec 8. On departure day, hotel staff also patiently showed us bus timetable and bus stop location to go to shiga kogen.

AustraliaIt's not that we didn't like it, it's that our western bodies were not use to the thin futons. We fixed it by adding extra bedding underneath.
We loved the location. Directly behind the hotel is the most gorgeous little lane way full of Onsens and eateries and a great bottleshop. We had dinner and breakfast here, both are full Japanese cuisine experience. Amazing! The hotel provides a shuttle to the snow monkey park , which is only minutes away. We had an early train to catch, and the staff took us to the station with a smile, no charge. It is a true ryokan ,which made this a wonderful authentic Japanese experience. The staff were brilliant, couldn't be more helpful or kind.

AustraliaOnly a few small things: although it is close, it doesnt belong to the Shibu Onsen so you can't use the public bath houses there. But not a big issue since the inn has its own onsens (communal plus private ones you can book for 50 mins). Beware of the room heating - they can get really warm!
A delightful little inn in a quiet onsen town. The owner and her staff went above and beyond. The food was meticulously presented and served. Pick the half board option. Did not get to check out both onsens as we were knackered but the one we went to was spacious and clean with indoor and outdoor options. They offer free transfers to the Snow Monkey Park entrance every morning at 9:45-ish which was really convenient. It is also right next to the Shibu Onsen main street - great for an evening stroll. Overall a great option if you want to spend the night locally before/after seeing the snow monkeys, and to experience staying at a Ryokan.

United KingdomWhat an amazing experience this hotel offers. There's a free shuttle from the train station, when you arrive at the hotel you're offered a warm welcome. Once inside you surrender your shoes and are given slippers. A person accompanies you to your room and serves you tea while explaining details about the hotel. We chose to pay more to use the private onsen which I would highly recommend. Some rooms come with an onsen but we gather only the larger rooms (ours didn't). The Japanese breakfast the next morning was fantastic.

United KingdomNot many restaurants around but we found a few good ones. Wish it was a bit closer to the Gion area but it does have the benefit of being close to the station.
Our favourite hotel out of the five we stayed in on our Japan holiday! Amazing onsen facilities, free treats like ramen and ice creams, comfy beds and very quiet with good-size rooms.

United KingdomThe price was high, but we did opt for the private onsen in the room and it was on the edge of being worth it.
Amazing Onsen style Ryokan in Japanese alps, convenient for visit to Snow Monkey Park. Mainly Japanese people staying for the local famous Onsen experience. Breakfast and Dinner were both worth the extra money and served in private rooms. Staff were super helpful and picked us up from station and drove us to the Monkey park in the morning.
