Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We are currently testing a weighted review system in Malta and Iceland (excluding hotel and vacation rental chains). For properties in these countries, the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

Me and my friends stayed at this ryokan for one night. The welcome by the staff was incredible. Everyone was very attentive and tried to make our stay as pleasant as possible. The rooms are beautiful and clean. The kaiseki is the best we had on our trip so far and the Japanese breakfast did not disappoint. It’s important to note that this property is right next to Shibu Onsen so you’re not allowed to use the 9 public baths. However, this does not make the experience any less magnificent. The baths in the property are beautiful. They switch between male and female visitors during different times of day. Apart from that one does have access to two public baths in the beautifully traditional back alley leading to Shibu Onsen. We can only recommend staying at this Ryokan.

FranceThey close down the lobby space early - about 9-9.30 pm, so not much to do in the evening except retire to your room.
Beautiful bath areas. Great food, friendly helpful staff.

Quiet place along the river and part of the small onsen town. Feels like recently upgraded. Facilities looks and feels new. Both diner and breakfast were excellent. Very careful about our allergies as well.

United StatesWonderful wonderful stay! From the moment you enter this beautiful place you enter another world to immerse yourself in a traditional Japanese setting. Leave your shoes at the door and slip on provided slippers. Escorted to your room and given your sized Yukata robe for wearing around the hotel and meals and Onsen. You absolutely must sign up for the half board meals. We were met at the floor 2 elevator stop by our personal waiter. He showed us to our private dining room and brought course after course of delightful foods (artfully presented and many delightful tastes). Some things we recognized but most we did not, but it as all good. We reserved a private Onsen each evening at 10pm that was the perfect ending of the day. We’re in our 70s so we opted for the traditional bedroom and the beds were comfortable and we slept well. We decided to walk to and from the Monkey park but could have taken the hotel shuttle. On our arrival and departed the hotel transported us from/to the train station. (Hint, the little coffee shop (Tea Salon Milano) directly across the major street from the little train station has excellent coffee and cheese cake). We can’t wait to go back to Wafu-no-Yado MASULA! We really hated to leave this wonderful place where we felt pampered by the staff.

GermanyOne improvement comment: The outside-onsen had a little too much dirt in it (it was too much for us to pick out ourselves). And the little blue special onsen (like a small round pool) inside had some kind of old dirt/dust swimming in it. But both is easily adjustable. It was overall great and we would always stay again in this hotel, if our paths cross again.
On request a vegetarian breakfast and dinner was prepared, very delicious and much appreciated - thank you very much! The owner also welcomed all guests during dinner, which was very classy and polite, which we liked. Room and view were beautiful. Own free of charge parking made the arrival very convenient. All stuff members were outstandingly kind and helpful. Thank you for having us and for your hospitality!

United KingdomThe “onsen village” is not worth visiting - not much going on but this is expected given you go there to relax. It is quite expensive, although you do get 2 meals included.
Nice stay. Good onsens. Large Japanese style rooms. Food good and staff attentive and very friendly. Worth a visit/stay. Good place to relax and walking distance from monkey park (2-3k gentle stroll).

United StatesLocation a bit far from Yudanaka station but they provide a free shuttle.
We stayed at a regular room and a one with the private onsen. I recommend spluring for the private onsen. It's a night a day difference between the two. The regular room was still great tho. Very roomy by Janpanese standards.

United StatesThis ryokan does not provide access to the "public" onsens in town, so if you are looking to complete the "Shibu Onsen public onsen tour" you my have to pay or gain access through another ryokan. The onsens at the hotel are fantastic though and we did not mind missing out on the "public onsens".
The ryokan is spotless and all the facilities are very well maintained. The onsens are very clean and well appointed. The staff at Wafu-no-Yado Masuya is top notch. They were very attentive and patient with us as we spoke no Japanese and it was only our second day in Japan. The breakfasts and dinners are works of art and were delicious.

United KingdomIf you are of advancing years and struggle even moderately with flexibility, sleeping on a futon on the floor makes getting out of bed quite an effort. However it is all part of the whole experience which wouldn't be genuine otherwise.
The whole experience was quite surreal if you had never before stayed in a ryokan. From the moment you arrive you have to surrender to the concept and embrace it otherwise it defeats the object. The staff are delightful and the decor both in the room and the public areas as traditional as it gets. The food is exquisite as you are unsure whether to eat it or frame it. Dinner is incredible and should be taken at least once. Wear the traditional clothes provided as they add to the theatre and use the onsen which are clean and relaxing.

United StatesCommunication could be better: we weren't met at the station because I had understood from the hotel's message that notifying them of arrival time was not necessary. (They said they would be at the station "after 2."). Also we were never given any information about how to use the numerous public baths in Shibu, though clearly guest staying at other inns were using them. Guests should sure to ask about these things and be proactive.
The meals and both of the onsen at this inn are lovely. The location at the end of the onsen street of Shibu makes for charming walks. The room was large enough for three futon without too much crowding.

AustraliaWafu-no-Yado Masuya was the best ryokan experience that we have in Japan so far. This ryokan is very well maintained and is very beautiful. We absolutely loved the warm hospitality of the staff and the exceptional attention to detail in everything. My 5 year old son was made very welcome with kids slippers, kids yukata, kids toothbrush set, and kids meals. We stayed for 2 nights with breakfast and dinner included and have to say the food is amazing. The kaiseki dinners are so good, and we were left feeling very full and satisfied. This ryokan is very close to the snowy monkey park and also has a very good shopping center (AEON) only 10 mins drive away. It snowed when we were there, and the view from our room window is magical. We hope to have the opportunity to stay in Wafu-no-yado Masuya when we visit Nagano next time.
