Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We are currently testing a weighted review system in Malta and Iceland (excluding hotel and vacation rental chains). For properties in these countries, the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.

By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

AustraliaThis is an amazing hotel owned by the one family for 200 years, the hosts go out of their way to ensure your stay is the best experience. We were blessed to have a welcome tea ceremony with the owners Mother which was the best one we have had in Japan. The private onsen at the hotel are fantastic, especially the cave onsen and the outdoor onsen.

New ZealandA little surprised that every restaurant in town closed before 5pm, so no choices to dine out
We had the dinner which was exceptional. Beautifully prepared and explained by the lovely staff who helped us get dressed in traditional clothes. The onsen was a memorable experience. Thank you to the owner for being so freindly and dropping us back to the station, and also his wonderful mother for the welcoming tea ceremony

SingaporeThe owner is helpful and provide first class service. He brought us to a few photo spots and helped us take good photo. On our departure, he offered to send us to the train station. All the staff are polite and provide their best service during our stay. Not to forget, we truly enjoyed the cave onsen.

NetherlandsWiFi did not have good coverage. However, being offline added to the experience!
This stay was truly exceptional. Upon arrival, we were immediately invited to take a welcome photo in front of the ryokan, after which we were guided into a room for a tea ceremony. Staff had great energy. On top of that, the dinner and breakfast were truly outstanding. Came for the hot springs in town, but the stay made my weekend.

Definitely the best stay in Japan so far! The host and his family made us felt welcomed as soon as we arrived creating a warm atmosphere. We enjoyed a really nice tea ceremony conducted by the host’s mum. Our room overlooked an amazing garden, was very clean and spacious. We rent Yukatas for free, and the host was always so enthusiastic to help us taking photos. The ryokan has two private onsen, both very beautiful, but it is very well located to use any of the public ones too. Last but not least, the host drove us back to the station.

CanadaIt was my first time staying on a tatami mat and maybe it was just me but I needed more padding for my bag so the bed wasn’t as comfortable as it could’ve been. I’m sure if I had a chance I could’ve requested a second padded mat for support but by the time I returned before bed, I didn’t see anyone because it was late.
From the moment I arrived I was greated with a big smile. The owner/manager offered to take pictures for me before I checked in as well as after I was fitted with a free kimono to wear during my stay. I was then taken to his mother’s house next door where I was presented with a tea ceremony. I love that this ryokan has been run by the family for 8 generations. I didn’t originally book it but was able to include the Kaiseki dinner for an additional fee and it was well worth it. Aside from the town’s multiple onsens they also have two private ones on the property. Breakfast was included with my booking and also delicious. The owner was very kind also dropping me off at the train station after I checked out. I wish I had more time than only the one night but if I ever come back I would definitely stay here again.

AustraliaThe futons are not very comfortable, but that might be Western bias as I have found all beds in Japan to be very hard. We were provided with yukata to visit the public onsen in but if you are large even the biggest size will not fit you, which is disappointing but wasn't a surprise.
The staff were amazing. The owner greeted us with unparalleled enthusiasm and took us to his mother for welcome tea. The other staff besides the owner spoke little English and we speak little Japanese but we had cheerful (if muddled) conversations all the same. The room was comfortable if a bit worn, and the onsen facilities were wonderful. Definitely try the outdoor pool at night. We had dinner and breakfast 2 nights and they were delicious and different meals each time.

CanadaMy stay included a fantastic Japanese breakfast served in my room, access to their Onsen, and a pass to the other 7 onsets in the village (1 onsen is closed everyday in rotation). Family and staff running the ryokan were incredibly friendly! Before starting the check-in process, I was able to observe the tea ceremony. It felt extra special since the ceremony was performed by the owner's mother. The owner helped take many pictures for me outside of the inn and on the street! I was especially appreciative since I was travelling solo!

AustraliaNothing, I had a fantastic time.
Please stay here! The owners and staff were all amazing and super helpful! They were happy to suggest places and hot springs to visit and went above and beyond during my stay. I was even invited to a tea ceremony with the owners mother which was fantastic. My room was lovely and clean and the shared bathroom springs were great as you can reserve them privately in the evenings. Great location within walking distance of the shops, hot springs and the train station.

CanadaI loved being able to lock the door to have privacy at the ryokan onsen. The onsen town is very peaceful and nice to relax. Staff are very nice and definitely book your stay to include meals. Morizuya-san will help take photos. He also offered to drive us to station, but we wanted to walk around since our Shinkansen was at 12:30pm. :)

CanadaThe stairs inside can be quite steep, so you need to walk slowly
The owner was awesome. I was a solo traveller and he made my stay very pleasant. His mom hosted a tea ceremony, I borrowed a yukata to wear around town and visited all the onsen. The owner even drove me to the station once I checked out. There's a lot of value in staying here. I highly recommend this place!

GermanyEverything was perfect, though the breakfast is served quite early (8.30 at the latest).
It was a traditional ryokan house and we were greeted with a tea ceremony, which we loved. Our room was massive and sleeping on the floor was surprisingly comfortable. They also have two onsens (one outside, one cave) that can be used privately during the week. On weekends they are open to everyone and split by gender. The host was amazing and extremely nice, taking a million pictures of us throughout the city and in the yukatas provided. We also received a typical japanese breakfast.

AustraliaThere were some works/renovations occurring to the front facade of the building which meant our view of the street from our room was obstructed by scaffolding. It didn’t impact the quality of our stay and I imagine probably only affected our room which had the street view.
The whole experience of staying here was wonderful. The staff were super friendly, the location was central and an easy walk from the station. We had the quadruple room for our family of 4 which was the biggest we stayed in during our time in Japan. The food was exceptional - we had dinner (paid extra for dinner) & breakfast, both served in our room. The tea ceremony and the outfits were also a fabulous experience. Kinosaki Onsen and this accomodation provided exactly the onsen experience I was looking for for our Japan holiday.

The owner was so very helpfu,l kind and accommodating. The staff were all helpful friendly and tried so hard. We couldn't speak a word of Japanese but they did so well making us feel comfortable. My husband loved all the food. I tried it all but found some of it difficult. But that's not the fault of the hotel. I wanted to try Local food and that's what I got. I thoroughly enjoyed the experience. Its not up market but very comfortable and friendly.
