Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We are currently testing a weighted review system in Malta and Iceland (excluding hotel and vacation rental chains). For properties in these countries, the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.

By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

BrazilAmazing experience!!! There is a heater in the room, so even if you are traveling during the cold season, you can sleep in a heated room. Great typical dinner, and excellent location.

United StatesI had an amazing stay at Shojoshin-in. The room was comfortable, the food was tasty, and the staff were friendly. I joined the temple tour, fire ceremony, and morning prayer. The temple is also right next to Okunoin cemetery.

Nice atmosphere, welcoming host, beautiful temple grounds. The room was lovely and the heater in the room worked very well. We got a window view of the street as it was snowing, so it felt magical. Very close to the cemetery.

JapanI didn't actually know where the morning prayer was and couldn't find them in time and was one minute late. I didn't want to open the closed door so I missed out on that opportunity unfortunately. I wish there was a sign or something!
Absolutely incredible experience that I highly recommend. The monks were so accommodating despite this not being a hotel, but rather an active temple. They speak English very well. The rooms are so beautiful, as is the temple. the bathrooms are modern and the bathing area is lovely. Do keep in mind the baths are only open at night from 4-9pm! you cannot use them in the morning. I saw a review saying that the heating wasn't adequate but that was not the case when I went. they had normal room heaters that kept the room nice and warm despite the rest of the temple being cold (it's February) so bring warm clothing for sure! I unfortunately missed the fire festival because I didn't know about it before checkin (pm) and I left before the afternoon the next day. the ceremony is at 1pm daily. I'll be sure to go next time. They offer you dinner and breakfast in private rooms and it was so delicious and so filling. Especially because it's all vegetarian I was so happy.

Germany- the bathing hours are limited to 16:00 - 21:00 if I remember correctly
I have stayed in quite a few places in Japan but this is my favorite for so many reasons: - You are staying in a temple monastery and you can see and feel that everywhere. You are staying in a piece of history. - the graveyard is one minute walking away (I went there three times in different times of the day) - you get a free tour of temple, can attend the morning prayer and a fire ceremony - the staff was super kind and some spoke very good English - I could check in early - the food is something very different than usual - there is an Onsen instead of a traditional shower room (bathing hours are limited see below) - the wifi is good

AustriaI spent a night at this temple in mid-January. It was unique. The atmosphere, the architecture, the food, the possibility to participate in goma ritual and the morning prayer. It was cold in the corridors and the temple rooms, but that is normal in those old and traditional Japanese structures. The oil heater in the room did a good job. But the highlight to warm up is the bath! It's just wonderful - a traditional Japanese bath with a wooden tub. What was also very special, was to be served dinner in a room of my own (I was travelling alone). The temple is located right beside the entrance to the Okunoin cemetery - so a bit off the centre of Koyasan, but the perfect place, if you look for tranquility. This temple is also special, because it has a really really long history, and it's architecture is mirroring the architecture of Koyasan's main temple.

United KingdomNothing - some slight communication issues due to limited English spoken but we the most important things to know are fairly clear.
The temple and accommodation site are beautiful. Literally next door to a path to the Cemetary so great location. The rooms were very clean, authentic and with all the comforts needed. We attended both the 1pm fire ceremony and 6.30am prayer and both were amazing experiences. Food was great - just mind it is traditional vegetarian Japanese food (rice, tofu, pickled veggies etc).

AustraliaUnfortunately we were cold during meal times and aren’t vegan so it was a struggle, totally understand we choose to stay there but being cold isn’t much fun, I have an even greater admiration of the monks and their style of living.
Amazing place, very real experience in our opinion, location amazing, heaters in rooms were banging and necessary and it was COLD everywhere else, fire ceremony amazing and stay til the very end, it takes a while but absolutely worth it. Morning prayer again awesome. Located 1 minute walk from the cedar tree cemetery.

IcelandThe futon could be improved, very thin mattress. A bit overpriced too for what the accommodation provide
Great location in Koyasan, very close to the cemetery entrance. The hot bath area is a plus, exactly what you need after a long day walking/travelling. The dinner/breakfast options are basic vegetarian but the food is good. The room was big and clean, a electric heater helps a lot during the cold night. The staff is very friendly and kind. I would recommend this accommodation

SingaporeThe beaded pillows take a bit of getting used to. The hot bath area is only open from 4-9pm. It would have been nice to have a hot bath after finishing the night tour of the cemetery (we reached back to the temple right at 9pm).
can't get more authentic than this temple stay, so you shouldn't expect too many modern conveniences. Most appreciated thought was the space heater in the tatami bed room (temperatures outside hit 0c)! The included dinner and breakfast consisted of an interesting array of vegetarian dishes, some sourced locally (ie. mushrooms). The location is right off the main road in Koyasan, and steps away from the entrance to the Okunoin cemetery.

Great authentic experience sleeping in a place full of history. The room is spacious and has everything for a good night of rest. The free temple tour is a must as many secrets of the place are explained, making the stay even more magical. The temple is the closest to the Okunoin path and temple, which is the most breathtaking place of Koyasan, making it a perfect place to stay if visiting late at night or at dawn. Finally, the meals are excellent.
