Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We are currently testing a weighted review system in Malta and Iceland (excluding hotel and vacation rental chains). For properties in these countries, the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

NetherlandsThere was a noise coming from some sort of pump or valve (it came from somewhere near the air conditioning) that was annoying while trying to sleep. This is, of course, a room-based problem and should not influence most people's stay.
Although simple, the place is cosy and clean. The shared shower and toilet were nice. It was a good and memorable experience.

United KingdomI've been coming to the Katsutaro since 2008 - I love the place. A great location, near the quieter streets of Nezu but also the bustling streets of Ueno. Good Metro and JR connections nearby. It's a basic Ryokan with nice rooms, friendly atmosphere, friendly helpful staff. There's a communal washing machine and fridge - and a little shop opposite - most useful.

AustraliaGreat place and lovely guy running it. I actually had an accident where I fractured my foot on the last day and he drove us to the nearest doctor who he knew spoke English. When we returned, he then gave us breakfast. Absolute champion. Easy to get to, close to Ueno park but not in the middle of hustle and bustle.

CanadaWhile the location is close to 2 stations (Nezu & Ueno), the stations are not very accessible for those with big luggage (obviously not the owner’s fault). Nezu station was only accessible by stairs (you have to haul luggage down stairs) and Ueno is either a huge staircase or a big hill to walk up.
Lovely traditional house located in such a peaceful neighbourhood. Futon was quite big and comfortable. The owner was very kind and caring. Overall, I really enjoyed my time here.

Philippinesthe AC is not working properly. I tried to make it work and adjust its temperature a couple of times but it didn’t solve the problem. Nevertheless, I’d still recommend the place overall
the owners of the ryokan are very nice and considerate of their guests. also, the place is located quite far from the city center so you can really appreciate the peaceful ambience that a ryokan should give

United StatesAfter staying in a busier part of Tokyo for a few days, it was a welcome change to stay at ryokan katsutaro. The owner was kind and welcoming, the room was very clean and comfortable, and my daughter and I will cherish this opportunity to stay in a more traditional Japanese lodging. I highly recommend this place

PolandA bit distant from the city center. Steep stairs to the first floor so need to be careful.
I liked the place very much. We had a spacious room with our own bathroom. Extremely clean, friendly owners, comfortable beds, it has everything what is needed to spend a good night after full day of walking and experiencing the city. Highly recommended experience - you don’t really need a hotel - Ryokan does the job. The place is a bit distant from city center although is located next to great Ueno Park so really worth to stay here. Quiet neighborhood gives the nice feeling on how the life looks like here. Really good value for money.

DenmarkVery little on the downside, but we can mention the noisy street and the little noise insulation of the rooms. The latter was not a big deal, but it may depend on the politeness of the guests. Ueno area is very calm at night, so make sure to be ok with that before booking.
The Ryokan Katsutaro was our perfect base to explore Tokyo. It is conveniently located close to Ueno JR station from which to take the Yamanote line to Shinjuku and Tokyo. The Ueno park is also close by and every morning and evening we had an amazing walk surrounded by cherry trees. There are good options for dinner in the neighborhood. The owners are kind and very accomodating, though it is not easy to communicate in English with them. However, Google translate gets you everywhere. The shared toilet and shower are very clean and functional, everything is provided by the Ryokan as toothbrush, paste, soap, shampoo and slippers. The room is basic but comfortable, and it is spacious enough to fit two people for five days. There is a refrigerator and there is a lobby downstairs where we had breakfast. There is a washing machine and a dryer, it costs 300 yen to make a laundry.

United KingdomThe walls are very thin and we were woken early by guests stamping around going to the fish market at 05:00 and talking loudly until 00:40 the following night. Signs reminding people to be respectful would be a good idea.
The Ryokan is very spacious with lots of character. The bed is incredibly comfy and the duvet was like a hug. In a quiet neighbourhood 15 min walk to the JY line (JR pass compatible). The staff were very friendly.

TaiwanIf I had to do it again, 2 nights probably would have been enough for exploring the area. The drier didn't dry our clothes.
We went for the Japanese style, tatami and futon experience and we got it! This is the original Katsutarou inn so it is quite an old building and the room was smaller than I thought it would be but it wasn't a big deal since we spent most of our time exploring outside. For the price, it was great. The location is really good for exploring cultural landmarks; there are museums nearby and temples galore, and it's very close to the famous Sensouji temple. Food around the area was also amazing; it's walking distance from Ichiban Ramen at Ueno Station; Ameyoko strip had lots of great food and tax-free shopping.

Hong KongClean, very basic ryokan (tatami, comforter, pillow) that serves as a low-cost housing option. This is a great place to sleep, but you will not want to spend much down-time here. Be sure to walk thru the neighborhoods around Ryokan to get a little view into what quaint local housing looks like.

A well priced ryokan in a great location near ueno Park, and within 5 minutes of a metro. The rooms are traditional and comfortable, and it is a great base to explore Tokyo. The owner is the best - friendly, helpful, and just such a kind man.

IsraelYou can hear your next door neighbors, which is common in most places I have been in Japan. The beams between the different parts of the room are too low, again, very common.
Very quiet neighborhood, easy access from airport and central metro station. Lovely parks and excellent local food joints if you keep away from the bustling Ueno station. The Ryokan is very comfortable, and the owners are helpful.

SwitzerlandThe next train station is Ueno, which is 15 minutes away on foot. Then there is also the Chiyoda line subway, which is a bit closer with about 8 minutes, but the Chiyoda line is not well connected to the places I wanted to go, I either had to change trains at least twice, or make rather large detours.
The room was very large and the futon was very comfortable. Usually they are quite a bit harder. En suite bathroom.

SingaporeThe private bathroom has no bidet but is not a very big deal.
The room is very spacious and is fairly near the train station. The bed comforter is very comfortable and staff very friendly. JR Ueno Station gets to many central places but is about a 15 min walk - however Nezu Station (subway) is only 5 mins away and is convenient as well.
