Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We are currently testing a weighted review system in Malta and Iceland (excluding hotel and vacation rental chains). For properties in these countries, the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

AustraliaMore variety in the offered meals, though they were EXCELLENT, they only offered Japanese meals. For example, it is mostly seafood so if you have a fish/seafood allergy. Was fine for our 1 night stay.
The private onsen and the entire "ryokan" feel but still having a proper hotel like support (front desk, restaurant, unlimited drinks, small store for goods etc.) was perfect. Staff were exceptionally good as well. Wanted to also help travelers find the place. From the Gora Cable Car Station there is a bus-stop right outside of the station (at/near the train crossroads). Take this bus to "Hakone Highland Hotel" (I believe all busses will stop here from Gora station). Directly across the road from the bus stop is Sengokuhara Shinanoki Ichinoyu. Enjoy your stay!

United KingdomThere was a low level paper window on the ground floor through which noise outside could be heard quite clearly. One of our party had slightly disturbed sleep because of this because it was next to their futon and it was windy overnight. Worth being aware of if you have light sleepers in your group, but wasn't a major issue overall.
Really recommend booking with the dinner and breakfast included, both were excellent. On top of this, one of our party couldn't eat fish and they were very accommodating of this and prepared her different options for the meals. Location was very good. Multiple busses run to it from Gora and some all the way down to Hakone Yumato and even Odawara (although I would avoid these if bringing large luggage as the Odawara busses can be very crowded and won't necessarily have room for large bags) The private onsen bath with the room we booked was excellent. Only large enough to comfortably fit 2 people at a time but that was fine you don't want to spend too much time in it in one go. We all used it multiple times despite only staying one night. Would have gladly spent a few extra days here to enjoy it further! While it was the most expensive place we stayed during our trip it seemed very reasonably priced for the quality of the food and the inclusion of the private bath. Would definitely recommend for a stay in Hakone.

United KingdomLate check in time. No vegetarian options for dinner but I understand that is what’s traditional.
Great traditional style Japanese rooms, just what we wanted! Really nice to have a small private onsen in the room. The public onsen we loved going to as well as it is much bigger. Dinner and breakfast was super nutritious. We loved our stay here. A lot of the reviews here mention the location being out of the way but don’t let that put you off. Most places to stay in Hakone are pretty spread out. If you have the Hakone free pass it’s very easy to get a bus from Hakone Yumoto station to there (about 25 minutes). Then the hotel is near the bus to take to Lake Ashi and the cable car (also included in the free pass). If you have a lot of luggage I would recommend forwarding it to your next hotel after Hakone instead of bringing it with you and just pack an overnight bag.

CanadaThe room has a bit of a mothball smell initially which faded over the first hour. The place was clean otherwise. A little shelving or some hooks to hang towels near the shower / bathing area would help provide a spot to dry out towels between uses.
Secluded area that felt resort-like. The staff had reasonable command of English and were always helpful regardless. They provided umbrellas for walking around the property and on excursions and there was complimentary drinks - including alcoholic beverages - at reception. The toiletries were nice and you could grab extra items easily at the front desk. The included dinner and breakfast were really delicious and a wonderful experience. The private onsen was a nice introduction to the Japanese hot spring experience.

Germany-
It was our first time staying at a Ryokan and it exceeded our expectations the room was traditional japanese room with tatami and at the upper level we had our futons. The onsen bath was refreshing and calming. The food was so delicous and well portioned and locally sourced. Our only regret is that we did not stay longer.

AustraliaIt's located about 25 minutes by bus up into the mountains from Hakone Yumoto station - from the station take the bus from "3" and you will need to get off at stop 244. It's an easy walk from there. Once you work out the bus routes and stops it's a great spot to stay.
The room was a great size and allowed us plenty of space to sit and relax. Having a sofa as well as a tatami area was a huge bonus. The private onsen was super hot but comfortable. The breakfasts and dinners were excellent. The Hakone Free Pass is worthwhile as you will likely use the buses a bit.

United StatesThe male staff attitude is not good enough. The hotel is located on highland where is not convenient to go to supermarket or convenience store.
Very comfortable and big house. The onsen is perfect! Highly recommend! The onsen is just at the yard of the house. The house style is like single family in the US. I really enjoy the onsen.

United StatesThe beds- very uncomfortable. They were thin spring mattresses on the floor. We wanted Japanese style experience. But these things just made your body hurt. Toss and turn all night until you wake up at 5am and go get in the onsen to help with the aches and pains. It also needs some updating. The walls are very dingy.
It was about a minute walk from the Hakone Tanzen Bus stop. Private onsen wan nice.

IrelandLovely room, very spacious with private hot spring bath. Beds weren't the comfiest. A bit of a journey from the station but that is a lot of the hotels in the area. Best value price wise in the same area I would say. Onsen facilities and traditional Japanese food for dinner and breakfast available. Very peaceful. Staff were very friendly and helpful.

SpainIf you go by public transport connection is a bit lame. In general in Hakone you depend a lot on buses that don't pass often.
We got the room with private onsen and it was amazing! The room is soo spacious and comfy, it's like a Japanese flat on your own very traditional, we love it to chill at the end of our trip. Dinner was one of the best meal of our trip, very complete, many courses and even explanation of each. Breakfast was great too! And the staff is super friendly. A bit pricey but when considering all the things included I think is a fair price.
