Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We are currently testing a weighted review system in Malta and Iceland (excluding hotel and vacation rental chains). For properties in these countries, the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

GermanyThe whole atmosphere was beyond tranquility. The old house, bringing every association with "Japanese living" to live, the relaxibg sounds of a river and crickets, making the night perfect for just slowly drifting to sleep, and the avsolutely lovely personal, helping and preparing everything with wholehearted frindliness.

ItalyI didn’t find the staff to be particularly warm (granted, as a young-ish solo female traveller I have experienced this often during this trip), and the facilities are really simple. The room didn’t have access to a window (the one served a corridor shared with other rooms). English was a challenge.
It was like sleeping in a temple. Old fashioned Japanese style room, ample and clean. I think you can choose to dine there as well.

United StatesThe tatami mats for sleeping don’t provide much cushion. It’s like sleeping on a sleeping bag. Very minimalist — low table and floor chairs.
Great location at the base of Mt Haguro and just steps away from the bus stop to and from Tsuruoka.

United KingdomHaving a separate shared bathroom was different for us but unavoidable in this type of place! We would stay again despite this.
Excellent location for walking up to the pagoda and temple. Lovely lady checked us in and served us so much delicious food! The soba restaurant nearby was also really good. Lodgings were cosy, comfortable and clean.

JapanComfortable, big tatami room. The green tea provided in the room was delicious. Also, it is just a few steps from Hagurosan Zuishinmon gate, and the bus stop. There is air conditioner and a fan in the room. I definitely want to stay again, and next time I want to try the Japanese-style breakfast.

JapanThe room was huge and comfortable. It was cold at night, and the bed was comfortable and warm. The pillows were a bit big, but I always bring my own, so that wasn't a problem. The shojin-ryori vegetarian dinner and breakfast were a fantastic feast of wild vegetables, various iterations of tofu, and delicious rice. The inn is right next to the entrance to the Mount Haguro hike, and it is across the street from bus stops to and from Tsuoka Station. Highly recommend.

JapanNothing really. But if you are planning to stay this kind of Shukubo at Hagurosan Toge machi, then make sure you also book breakfast as well as dinner at the place of your stay. It is a very small town and everything gets closed before 17:00. Nearest convenience store is 10 min by car.
It is an experience. Do not expect a typical hotel/motel/ryokan/b&b type experience. Shojin ryori (food) was also something to experience. A Japanese style tatami Room was specious and very very clean. Very close to Hagurosan shrine. Walking 2 mins.

DenmarkI stayed only for one night instead of two because I felt so uncomfortable. They don't use covers for the duvet and pillow. Throughout my stay, there was a piece of paper in front of my room stating my name, sex and number of people (one person), which makes obvious that a female solo traveller is staying in that room. There was no possibility to lock the door from inside and you have to take off your slippers in front of the room, meaning that one can easily see if I am in the room or not. I think that's a security issue. Unfriendly staff.
Close to the entrance to Mt. Haguro and the bus stop.

JapanFutons were a tad thin and we stayed in a room next to the main corridor - the exit sign was so bright which made it hard to sleep but managed with a makeshift eye mask.
A good stay if you need a base for the Dewa Sanzan as it’s right next to the entrance to Mt Haguro, 35min drive to Mt Gassan, 1hr to Mt Yudono. We stayed here and used it as a base for our hikes which worked well. They serve dinner and breakfast (temple food so all vegetarian) which is convenient. We spent about 110AUD per person/per night including accom and 2 meals (dinner and breakfast).

JapanUnfortunately I was charged twice for it, with Booking.com insisting that I pay the property owner despite having already charged my card. So far, support remains largely unhelpful. The source of the problem is not clear to me but it should not happen.
The stay itself was great, with a comfortable futon, an extremely welcoming host and heavenlike breakfast.
