Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We are currently testing a weighted review system in Malta and Iceland (excluding hotel and vacation rental chains). For properties in these countries, the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

AustraliaAccessibility in Hakone was not the best - in terms of frequent bus services, etc. There was no food/meal options available at the accomodation. It was difficult to find restaurants and food places to dine at especially on the weekend as everything was fully booked/reserved beforehand.
It was quite easy to find. It was in a beautiful location. Room size was very good - especially at the price point. Onsen and other ammenities were well-kept and cleanly. Very homey vibes.

United KingdomThe only slight negative was that to use the outdoor onsen you needed to shower indoors first, then change into clothes to then use it. If a shower was provided at the outdoor onsen this would make the process much easier.
Loved everything about this hostel! We stayed in the dorm room pods - they are very private and with all the conveniences you would need for your stay (USB and wall chargers, good lighting etc). The staff were so friendly and welcoming. The shared kitchen and lounge space was really nice and extremely well-equipped with the nicest crockery I've ever seen in a hostel. There was free tea and coffee and you can even grind your own coffee beans which were provided. The seating area was both cosy and conducive to socialising. The onsen was very good (both indoor and outdoor) and usually not too busy. The location is great for access to many nearby cafes, restaurants and convenience stores, as well the bus stop and train station (so if you have the Hakone Free Pass it's perfect for exploring the region). Would definitely stay again if visiting the region.

AustraliaThere was a slight draft from the windows which made it a bit cold at times but this is likely due to the traditional architecture so we didn’t mind so much.
We stayed in one of the traditional room & found the staff to be very lovely & helpful with assisting us with places to eat & restaurant bookings nearby. This was also our first experience of an onsen which we found very relaxing & all instructions clear. The common area was also well equipped to make meals yourself & the view from the property in Autumn was beautiful.

United StatesThe only downside was dealing with eating/food. It would have been nice if breakfast of some sort was provided (coffee and tea was available). There is a 7-Eleven nearby, so we were able to pick up items, but selection is basic. Regarding dinner, the small town location with just a few restaurant options was challenging and necessitated advance planning, especially since we were relying on public transport to get around and that stopped around 8pm.
Friendly, helpful staff; spacious and comfortable private room supplied with everything we needed; the provided samue were cute and fun to wear during our stay; loved the outdoor onsen; the common/shared kitchen and lounge area was inviting and well-stocked. Wished we could have stayed longer!

Super cozy interior and great onsen! It was a bonus that you could also meet other solo travellers if you’re interested since the lounge area is naturally conducive for that

DenmarkThe location suited me very well but not sure wether it is practical in terms of being close to other tourist attractions like the rope ways and lake etc! But would not know as I did not do those things. Wish the reception sold more of international snacks (in addition to the great assortment of noodles etc).
Loved everything about this hostel, from the location (close to the open air museum) in the mountains, down to the very small details of the interior. Lounge area was beautifully planned with a great view and places to hang out with new friends. The Onsen bath was clean and beautiful too. Had it for myself in the morning. The dorm bed was super big and felt private.

GermanyLots of stairs to access reception (tricky with luggage, inaccessible for wheelchair users or people with limited mobility). The dryer was not good, it took us hours well into the night to finish the laundry. Take into account the rooms have no toilets (there’s shared ones on each floor) or showers (those are shared and open in the Onsen, divided by gender).
The common room is amazing. The private onsens are beautiful and very enjoyable. Our room had a balcony with great views to some small waterfalls. The complimentary lounge clothes were so comfy I’d loved to take them home. Staff is very nice and accommodating.

United StatesThe lack of sidewalks isn't ideal for walking around at night even though the area is very safe. Exploring during the day is definitely easier but beautiful area and be sure to take a trip one of the nearby lakes!
Our room here was one of the highlights of our stay. There is access to capsules and other options but our larger room was very appreciated to recharge. The staff were incredibly accommodating, both the indoor and outdoor onsen areas were beautiful and perfect, and everything about the room was perfect.

AustraliaWe didn't realise how challenging it would be to eat dinner in the area. When we asked for tips on restaurants in the afternoon we wish staff would have recommended us booking ahead. We spent a long time walking the streets at night trying to find somewhere as all the restaurants were full.
Stunning location - the views are incredible. I enjoyed going for a walk around the area as it was so peaceful. There is a bus stop just outside the guest house, so it was easy to get to from the train station. The staff were lovely and the communal dining area was excellent. We slept in a private japanese room, which was clean and comfortable.

SwitzerlandI recently had the pleasure of staying at Onsen Guest House Tsutaya, and I can't say enough good things about my experience. From the moment I arrived, I was greeted with warm hospitality and a serene atmosphere. The staff at Tsutaya were incredibly friendly and accommodating. They went out of their way to ensure I had a comfortable and enjoyable stay. The shared dorm room was not only comfortable but also immaculately clean. The bedding and facilities were well-maintained, and the layout of the room offered a sense of privacy in a communal setting. The location of the guest house was also ideal, nestled in a peaceful area that allowed for a tranquil escape from the bustling city. It was the perfect retreat to unwind and recharge. I highly recommend Onsen Guest House Tsutaya to anyone seeking an authentic Japanese experience with top-notch service. My stay was memorable, and I can't wait to return to this gem of a guest house.
