Awkward to find on the map due to the booking .com listing being a bit ambiguous with the name only in Japanese. They take credit card, even though listing says they don’t and I missed a train specifically to get cash out so lost time in koyasan unnecessarily.

Lots of effort out into making guests comfortable and feeling welcomed. Food was fantastic, bed comfortable, room was nice and all the temple activities were great. Highly recommended!

Dinner had so many vegan dishes and they were delicious. Breakfast was smaller but still filling. It won't be a western breakfast. The futon ended up being comfy and warm but the halls were cold in the morning. I suggest arriving at the start of check in to take full advantage of everything there is (enjoying the pond, onsen, tea in room while reading the info on ceremonies). Location was great for the big 3 sites, if you don't mind walk 20 minutes in either direction.

Most of the Monks don't speak English so is very hard to communicate and follow instructions.

Everything was one of the best experience in my life. I will do it 100 times again.

Very unique experience and we loved it! We stayed with two children (8 and 10yo) and we were a bit nervous as to how it would go, but the staff were amazing and we really enjoyed the stay. The food was fantastic with variety and lots of it! Meditation and morning ceremonies were great. You have to be back to the temple by 9pm and not allowed to bring in food and drink from outside to respect the rules of the temple which is fair enough but keep this mind. Highly recommend!

It would be great to have a bit more explanation about the ceremonies or a bit more guidance how to meditate properly. They just did it and there was not much info or history around them.

It was a great experience, food was typical local vegan food. They have a nice bath. They conduct one meditation session in the evening and two ceremonies in the morning. Check out is quite early (9:30 am), however you can leave your luggage with no cost.

The onsen had limited opening hours, only in the evening. Also, there is no heating, so bring a good jacket. Still 100% worth it, i will come back next time i am in Japan.

Koyasan is an experience that you should not miss. This temple is in a good location, close to a bus stop, but you can also walk to the cemetery. The morning ceremonies were an awesome experience, and the food was great! Room was as expected, very traditional and very very cold at night.

    One night stay in winter

In winter , Dec 22 to 23 stay in my case, it’s very cold below freezing inside the building except for the rooms that had kerosene heaters. The ketone heaters had a smell that bothered me ,and also was concerned with continuous use in the night due to emissions . So, the monks provided me an an electric heater immediately which was very much appreciated . I think milder temperatures would be ideal for temple stays if you’re not used to externe cold inside buildings.

Clean, quite , located right next to bus stop with good access to restaurants & shops . The temple monks where very helpful

I had to walk a bit from my room to the bathroom/main hall and the corridors were really cold (outside temperature was -8deg) - bring your jacket and it will be fine.

It was my first time staying in a temple. The whole experience was excellent (meditation, morning ceremony and homa ceremony). The monks were very helpful. Everything was very clean. My stay was during winter and my room was heated, which made it comfortable. The food (dinner and breakfast) was great.

The only complaint I would have was pertaining to the heating device used in the room. The device gave off a gaseous smell because I believe it utilized kerosene. This smell could be unpleasant to some.

The location was easy to get to. Everything went smoothly and was explained. No language communication issues. We enjoyed the simplicity of the stay and the morning meditation/fire ceremony.

Note: they dont lay your futon out until you have had dinner so there is no where to rest , during the day. Breakfast is at 730am. The monks kept every room really warm but beware, the corridors and common areas are not heated, it was nearly zero and snowing so you will need to wear your jacket between rooms.

This temple is particularly good value for money. The futons were the most comfortable in all of our stay in Japan. The monks were very helpful although quiet and austere. We arrived sick so didnt participate in activities. The onsen baths were nice but a long way from the rooms. Beautiful grounds. Amazing amazing food and lots of it!

Rooms are not equipped with any bathroom/toilet, you have to use the common ones. Also, I was there in winter and apart from the room, which is heated, the temperature in the lodge was very low

The accommodation is great for tourists looking for an authentic Koyasan experience. The lodge is a traditional japanese complex, the room is spacious and included tatami, futon and yukata and there are also two hot tubs, one for men and one for women. Finally, be sure not to miss the two morning ceremonies with the monks

Very accommodating staff who did everything to make us feel comfortable. They tried to proactively address a situation of no taxis on the morning of our departure. One staff member even took it upon himself to drive us to the funicular station in bad weather. A fascinating place in Japan to visit and learn about as Koya San is a recognized World Heritage Site. The meals were excellent.

It was very cold in the end of October. The electric heater in our room switched off every 3 hours.

We really loved our stay in this Komyo-in Temple. We participated in the evening meditation, the morning prayer and fire ceremony. The dinner and the breakfast was very delicious and we were really pleased that during our dinner our bed was prepared for sleep. The location is very nice, it is very close to Okunoin cemetary. This was the highlight of our Japan tour and we really recommend vist Koyasan.

Since the temple is welcoming many foreign visitors, it would be nice if the staff could learn a bit of English. That being said, they go out of their way to bridge the communication gap as much as possible.

Incredible dinner and breakfast. The temple is beautiful, the room is comfortable, and the bath is very relaxing. The monks go out of their way to make you feel welcome and provide you with an opportunity to take part and be able to see their faith.

It was such a blessing to be able to stay at Komyo-in Temple, it is a real insight into temple life, everything from the food to the hosting, to all of the temple activities that are free for guests to participate in (meditation, morning ceremony, goma ceremony). I will never forget my stay here, it is also conveniently close to the cemetery, and only a 2 minute walk from a bus stop linking you directly to the station and other temple sites. Don’t be concerned about language barriers so long as you are respectful, it was my favourite stay on my trip.
