Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We are currently testing a weighted review system in Malta and Iceland (excluding hotel and vacation rental chains). For properties in these countries, the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

FranceAs it's an old house (with all its charm!), you can hear creaking floorboards and doors, however this actually was not an issue for us during the nights as the other guests were very quiet and respectful.
This is a lovely little place, away from the touristy crowds of Kyoto and ran by a lovely couple. It was an amazing experience, the breakfast was delicious and the hot bath in the evenings felt really good after a long day of walking around Kyoto. The tea ceremony was also an unforgettable experience and we learned a lot about the tea ceremony traditions of Japan. The place is kept immaculately clean and the sleep was great even though we weren't used to sleeping on the tatami mats. They were happy to store our luggage on the day of check out. A kettle and tea bags are provided in the room.

SwedenEverything was so great. It is a ryokan which a lot of attention and love has been put into by Satako and her husband, we felt very at home and cared for. Would absolutely recommend staying here and would come back without question! The neighborhood is also very cozy and nice to walk around. We were sad to leave today!

NetherlandsBe aware that the traditional futons are not as comfortable as a modern bed. For us it was a conscious decision because it is part of the experience and I wouldn't have wanted it differently.
The owners are extremely nice and accommodating people. Their English is great so communication was easy. The tea ceremony and traditional breakfast were amazing.

AustraliaIt was a bit far away from the centre, suggest renting the bikes available as with these, the distance is no problem. E bikes also available in the area. The area has also interesting things to see.
Our hosts were sensational, the building was a 140 year old original home converted to a 4 bedroom ryokan 10 years ago by the hosts with so much love. Wabi Sabi and zen. The attention to every detail was amazing, a true experience of mindfulness and peace. Met with a beautiful cleaning bath followed by an amazing tea ceremony. Breakfast was excellent!!

New ZealandThere was nothing we didn't like. We loved it all!
We loved everything about our stay here. We were made to feel so very welcome. Everything was done beautifully and impeccably even the laying out of the food on our breakfast trays which by the way tasted delicious! The 4 principles of the tea ceremony are evident in everything our hosts do: harmony, tranquility, purity and respect.

Beautiful house and room, and a very special tea ceremony and breakfast. The owner was so helpful and kind, and directed us to the best spots to view cherry blossoms in the neighborhood (we were lucky with the timing of our stay). We felt very welcomed as a gay couple.

United StatesNothing, we enjoyed everything about our stay.
Everything about our stay at Ryokan Tori was amazing. The owners were incredibly nice, very attentive, and gave us excellent recommendations for things to do and places to eat. The private bath was amazing, the tea ceremony was delightful, and the breakfast was delicious! Beautiful rooms with comfortable futon and nicely appointed. Also very quiet despite being near a major street. It is close to a bus stop that we used to get to and from the train station, and it was really easy to walk and explore nearby + head to a subway station to strike out further. We were only in Kyoto for 24 hours this trip, but Ryokan Tori made it our favorite part of a 2 week long trip to Japan. We are already planning a return trip and will definitely stay here again.

United StatesWe had an amazing time here. The Ryokan was beautiful, peaceful and gave us an experience we will never forget. The Ryokan was in a quieter area, which was perfect after a day of battling crowded streets at some of the more popular spots during the high season. We were treated so well and everyone was so kind. The bedding was extremely comfortable and the bath was a highlight of my night that I looked forward to every day! Looking forward to returning someday.

United KingdomFaultless.
Our hosts were exepctional, went above and beyond our expectations. I lost my wallet on a day trip to Nara, when coming back to the Ryokan. Our hosts then went and got in contact with the local shrine, Nara temple and then even going to the local police, through their efforts we ended up retrieving it from the police station the following day! I never would have found if it wasnt for their help! :) We really enjoyed the tranquilty of the tradtional Ryokan, and the bath was such a bonus as when arriving back each day, the first question we were asked was if we wanted a bath run for us, which adds a lovely homely touch, especially after a day full of sightseeing. We also attended the tea ceramony the host provided, which was as traditional as it could get, and you really get to appreciate craft and skill involved in making the tea . The breakfasts in the morning were exceptional giving you a full authentic taste of a traditional Japanese breakfast, with the added touch of our hostess walking through each component on the plate and even giving insight as to what compliments each best. Finally, our hosts also gave us some lovely reccomendations of places to eat which we tried out and were outstanding.

The owners were incredible. They made us feel very special. My wife and I were on our honeymoon, and the owners went out of their way to decorate our room for our honeymoon, and gave us treats. The tea ceremony was beautiful, the bath was relaxing, and our breakfast in the morning was delicious! We were so impressed, we left them a thank you gift.

AustraliaNothing to fault as long as you have an open mind and embrace the cultural norms in Japan. The futons/floor sitting for breakfast were comfortable for us but inflexible/elderly Westerners or people with back issues might struggle. The hosts were really kind people and a beautiful couple.
Most amazing stay of our whole trip in Japan. Lovely couple hosted us and prepared us traditional Japanese breakfast each morning and the onsen each evening. Incredible courtesy and hospitality. Great for Westerners for the cultural experience, the tea ceremony was so special and informative. We definitely want to come back. It is quite north of the city but we rented electric bicycles so had no issue getting to all the major tourist attractions. Kyoto is a very special and peaceful city.

CanadaLocation was a bit out of of the way, but city buses in Kyoto are fairly easy to navigate.
I would highly recommend Ryokan Tori to anyone travelling to Kyoto. The hosts were warm and friendly and extremely helpful in giving directions etc. Breakfast was delicious. The onsen and tea ceremony were the perfect balance of relaxing and educational. I was not sure if the futon bed would be comfortable to someone used to Western accommodation, but it was actually one of the most comfortable beds I slept in during my whole trip - including five star hotels, etc.

SpainDoors are shorter than in Europe, so my partner, who is a tall guy, hit his head going through a door, haha, but it's not like it is the ryokan's fault. It's just something to consider coming from a Western country.
Everything was amazing! The owner was extremely lovely, super welcoming, and attentive. The place is rather small, with only 3 rooms, but very beautiful. We had the tea ceremony and then took a bath, which made our stay super relaxing and authentic. In general, we loved it! Thank you, Satako, for everything ^^
